Monarda didyma 'Jacob Cline', commonly called Jacob Cline Beebalm or Red Bergamot, is an outstanding native perennial for Long Island gardens. As its name suggests, beebalm graciously invites friendly bees wherever it's planted. You can also expect unannounced visits from hummingbirds and butterflies.
Monarda, hardy in Zones 3-9 (we are Zone 7), is a member of the mint family (think square stems). Happily, Monarda blooms all summer with dramatic scarlet-red flowers that can also be used as cut flowers for informal arrangements.
How to grow: Full sun or partial shade. Plant in amended soil (add compost or composted manure prior to planting) that is moist, yet well-drained. Allow some space; Monarda will grow 3-4' tall and 3-4' wide.
Helpful hints: Keep powdery mildew at bay by providing good air circulation where planted, and whenever possible, water the soil and not the leaves! BTW - Monarda is deer resistant.
