slug
Be on the lookout for rose slugs feeding on roses. When found, hand pick or use a labeled insecticide for control.

Use Blossom Booster on flowering annuals to keep them in flower-mode! Read and follow label directions for amount and frequency.

It's time to harvest spring veggies! Radish, spinach, broccoli rabe and other cool season crops should be picked when ready. Are you growing leaf lettuces? Enjoy their outer leaves and let the core continue to produce more leaves until the heat of summer arrives!

*The adult stage of the rose slug is shown in this image.

Croton 'Petra', with its colorful, attractive foliage, is a plant that really screams tropical! Take a trip to sunny Florida and you will see crotons used as shrubs or hedges in the landscape. Want to carve a tiny piece of paradise in your backyard this summer? Then 'Petra' deserves a favorable look.

How to grow: Full sun! Soil should be kept moist, yet well drained. Avoid excess soil moisture that will cause root rot. Petra loves humidity. . .it should be perfectly happy with our humid Long Island summers.

How to use: Perfect for sunny landscape, you can mass them in beds and borders for a dramatic and colorful effect. Petras can be used in glazed planters for a real 'WOW!

'Petra' can transition indoors before frost. Watch the weather, cold temperatures will cause leaf drop. The tricky part about bringing it indoors - trying to replicate the same sunny conditions it enjoyed outdoors. Always worth a try! And if they don't survive the winter indoors, there will always be new plants available for purchase in the spring.

Dahlias, native to Mexico, were first grown by the Aztec Indians in the fourteenth century. American gardeners have adored dahlias for many years. Flowers come in many sizes - from the small pom-pom sized flowers to the large dinner plates; and in a variety of hot and pastel colors of orange, red, pink, purple, white and yellow.

How to grow: Dahlias are sun lovers - 6 plus hours a day is ideal to keep them in prolific bloom. Soil should be moist, yet well drained. Poor quality garden soil should be amended with compost or composted manure prior to planting. (Actually, this is a good garden practice that should be done to any garden soil every year prior to planting.) If you grow dahlias in pots, use potting soil - not topsoil from your garden!

Dahlias are ideal candidates for beds and borders, and all types of pots and planters. If you grow the taller, large-flowered varieties, consider staking them at the time of or shortly after planting.

Good gardeners know to grow extra dahlias. As pretty as they are in the garden, they make great cut flowers for the home. Cut dahlias can last for a week or more when the water is changed and fresh cuts are made every day or so.

Catharanthus, more commonly called flowering vinca (it's so much easier to say), is a great annual for continual summer color and interest in the garden! Slow to get started in May, this plant really takes off as the temperatures climb (it loves warm soil!) during the summer months. Total sunshine and well-drained soils keep flowering vinca happiest. Fun colors of reds, pinks, lavenders and white, this annual is easily used in pots and planters, as well as edgers for beds and borders.
