It's time to transition houseplants outdoors for their annual summer vacation! Shady locations, with some morning sun, are preferable. Never place your houseplants in the hot sun. They, too, will sunburn. Ouch!

Tired of all the recent rains that have produced lots of puddles and standing water? A potential consequence of all this H2O - mosquitoes! Drain saucers and other water collecting receptacles ASAP to eliminate their breeding places. Mosquitoes can be controlled using organic or chemical measures.

Baptisia australis, commonly called False Indigo or Baptisia, is a North American native. Its vivid blue lupine-like flowers (once used for dye by Europeans) and bright green leaves are a knock-out combination for late spring/early summer gardens. Hardy in zones 3-9 (we are considered zone 7), Baptisia grows best in full sun and well-drained soils. Once established, Baptisia is drought-tolerant (that does not mean NO water!). This shrub-like plant will grow 3-4' tall (think rear of the garden bed or border) so allow adequate spacing (3') between plants. It's a good companion plant with peonies, salvias, iris, and Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla)

Helpful hint: plant it in the right location the first time; Baptisia transplants poorly due to its long taproot.

Into flower arranging? After Baptisia's amazing flowers fade, black seed pods often persist in the garden, and can be used for flower arranging.

Basil, formally known as Ocimum basilicum, is one of the most popular herbs for American gardens. A member of the mint family, basil is prized for its aromatic leaves that can be used fresh or dried.

Easy to grow, plant basil in a pot near your back door, in a kitchen garden (Thomas Jefferson had a kitchen garden at Monticello!), or anywhere that you can provide full sun for most of the day! Soil should be moist, yet well drained; avoid heavy, poorly drained locations. Potted basil can be successfully grown using a potting or container mix.

Harvest basil leaves as you need them; this allows the plant to continue to produce new leaves until frost. Pinch out the flower stalk when it appears; this encourages the plant to produce new leaves and not go to seed.

Pesto - presto! Use a food processor or blender and whip up a batch of fresh pesto; just a few common ingredients make this a summer favorite. A quick search on the computer will provide you with many recipes. Pesto can be used on pasta or crostini, in omelettes, risotto and more.

Can you ever have enough basil? Plant extra now to enjoy when winter rolls around. Freeze small batches of whole leaves in plastic bags, or chop up basil leaves and then top off with a little water in ice cube trays. When you need them, just drop the cubes in your favorite recipe!

Bacopa, formally known as Sutera, is a fun, sun loving annual. Prized for its many white or lavender flowers, Bacopa thrills as it spills over window boxes, planters or hanging baskets. Here's the trick to keeping Bacopa happy - keep the soil barely moist. If Bacopa dries out, it will rebound, but will take several weeks for new flowers to appear. Keep in constant flower mode - liquid feed with Blossom Booster according to label directions.
