Let the summer fun begin as we cheerfully say hello to Memorial Day weekend! What does Memorial Day mean to you? Gardeners use this as the start date to plant their gardens - veggies, herbs, flowers and more. It's also the time when the patio furniture and grill come out of winter hibernation for relaxing days ahead. However you decide to 'kick-off' this long awaited weekend, we'll be here. Open Fridays and Saturdays - 8am to 8pm; Sundays through Thursdays from 8am to 6pm. We are open Memorial Day from 8am to 6pm.
ripe tomato
Cage or stake tall varieties of tomatoes at the time of, or soon after, planting.

Be on the lookout for the early appearance of aphids in the garden. Control with organic methods (including ladybugs) or conventional chemical remedies.

It's time to harvest spring veggies! Radish, spinach, broccoli rabe and other cool season crops should be picked when ready. Are you growing leaf lettuces? Enjoy their outer leaves and let the core continue to produce more leaves until the heat of summer arrives!

Continue to plant warm season veggies in the garden. Got extra space? Consider planting a row or two of your favorite veggies for donation to the INN's soup kitchens.

Go Green! Bring your empty plastic plant trays and flats back to Martin Viette; we'll gladly recycle them for you.

Passionate for Passion flowers? One look at their amazing flowers and you will be! Twining and twirling, passion flowers are ideal for hanging baskets, or grown on an arbor, trellis or obelisk. A few care tips: lots of sunshine! Soil should be kept moist, never wet. Fertilize with Blossom Booster according to label directions.

Prunus laurocerasus 'Schipkaensis', aka 'Schip' Laurel, has grown in popularity as a hardy screening plant thanks to its dense form and ability to grow in shade. Prized for their dark glossy green leaves, Schips can grow to 10-12' tall by 4-6' wide. For best growth, provide rich organic soil that is moist but well drained. Clay soils should be amended with organic matter - compost or composted manure - prior to planting. Avoid soils that are slow to drain or frequently wet. Schips will produce flowers in late spring and blackish purple berries in early fall making it a great plant for attracting wildlife in the landscape. Avoid planting in open, windy or exposed sites due to tendency to wind burn or summer drought.
