Colder overnight temperatures this week were concerning for many gardeners. Warmer temperatures - day and night - are predicted through the weekend. May 15th (yesterday) is considered the safe planting date for all tender annuals and vegetables.

Little weeds, little problems; it's time to get a handle on weeds before they take over landscape and garden beds. Remember to eliminate all weeds before you consider any of the following options. Option 1. Preen, a pre-emergent weed killer can be used. Read and follow label directions carefully before you apply. Option 2. Weed shields, (landscape fabric/cloth), are another option for keeping landscape and garden beds free of weeds. Option 3. Mulch, 2-3" maximum, can be used. Do not mulch over the crowns of plants.

Don't be too hasty to remove foliage from spring-flowering bulbs - daffodils, tulips, hyacinths! The foliage should be yellowed (ratty looking) before you cut. Interplant with summer annuals to camouflage the bulbs' ripening foliage.

Veggies and herbs - it's time to plant all edibles in the garden! Got space? Plant an extra row of your favorite veggies and herbs for the INN's soup kitchens. We're a designated drop-off site for the Interfaith Nutrition Network.

Angelonia, sometimes called summer snapdragon, wows with pretty spikes of colorful flowers (in white, pink or lavender) from May through October. Grow in full sun and fertile, well-drained soils.

A low maintenance annual, no deadheading is ever needed to keep Angelonia in 'bloom mode'! However, good gardeners will fertilize with Blossom Booster to keep them happy. Need another reason to grow Angelonia? It's tolerant of typical Long Island summer heat and humidity! (That explains its common name of 'summer snapdragon'. The flowers resemble a snapdragon, but unlike snapdragons, Angelonia likes the heat of summer!) Uses: in landscape beds in combination with other annuals and perennials, as border edging along walkways, driveways, or in pots and planters. Love flowers in the home? Use Angelonia as cut flowers in informal summer or fall bouquets or arrangements.

Invite the intoxicating fragrance of honeysuckle to your garden. And when you do, you'll also invite hummingbirds and butterflies wherever you plant it! Honeysuckle is a climbing plant - perfect for arbors, trellises, or fences. Without support, honeysuckle will act as a groundcover, spilling over walls or embankments.

Honeysuckle 'Dropmore Scarlet', adored for its sweet-smelling flowers, is a popular hardy variety for Long Island gardens (hardy in Zones 4-9, we are considered Zone 7). Attractive pairs of blue-green leaves are the perfect backdrop for the showy tubular coral-red flowers that bloom prolifically in spring and summer. Plant 'Dropmore Scarlet' in full sun or light shade and well-drained soil for best results.

It's May and that means rhododendrons are blooming all over Long Island. This always-popular landscape plant grows best in locations that offer filtered sun and organically enriched acidic soil. (By that we mean adding compost or composted manure to the soil to assist with drainage and aeration.) Their flower trusses can be real showstoppers; look for just about every color imaginable. Rhododendrons are evergreens that make great additions to landscape beds, borders and foundations.
