waterdrip
Newly-planted trees and shrubs need to be watered regularly for proper establishment. Good gardeners will use a soaker hose to deliver water to where it's needed most - the roots. Snake the soaker hose around plants in planting beds. If unsightly to you, cover with an inch or two of mulch.

Preen, a pre-emergent herbicide, can be used on landscape beds to keep them weed-free during the growing season. You must start with clean beds, and then apply the pre-emergent.

Grab the trowel and continue to plant vegetables and herbs in the garden. Need some help? Click here.

impatien
Impatiens have been the most popular shade-loving flowering annual for many decades. However, with the emergence and wide spread concerns of Downy Mildew, a fungus, Martin Viette will not be selling Impatiens this year.

Unfortunately, there is no cure (chemical nor organic) for Downy Mildew at the present time and research on the disease is ongoing. Only regular and double Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana) are affected. Fortunately, New Guinea Impatiens (pictured) and Sunpatiens are not affected by this fungus and are available at Martin Viette.

Martin Viette has always been known for the quality of its plant material and commitment to your gardening successes. We are expanding the assortment of suitable alternatives so that you can be successful with your annual and flowering purchases.

We've made it easy! Please look for our M*V*P 2 signs in our annuals department that indicate plants that are suitable for shady garden beds, hanging baskets, planters & window boxes. Our sales associates are here to assist you with all your gardening needs.

Nothing screams 'tropical paradise' more than flowering Hibiscus! Dreamy, colorful flowers - in shades of red, yellow, pink and orange - make a big statement at entryways, patios, and decks - anywhere you plant them! Be creative; use Hibiscus in planters, pots, window boxes, or landscape beds and borders.

Here's how to keep hibiscus happy and flowering: provide abundant sunshine and well-drained potting or container soils. Use Jack's Blossom Booster fertilizer; be sure to read and follow label directions for application rates. Tropical hibiscus will put on a fabulous show of flowers until frost. Go all out - pick a few blossoms and float them in your pool. You'll believe you've escaped to your own personal paradise!

Can you say s-a-l-s-a? Cilantro (aka coriander) is the mainstay herb in Mexican cooking. Let's not forget that Middle Eastern cooking uses cilantro in yogurt-based sauces and dips.

Cilantro prefers cooler weather; hot summers can cause it to flower and go to seed quickly. So, how do you deal with a short-term crop that begs for long-term harvest? Easy; replant several times during the growing season to ensure a steady supply. Transplants can be added to the garden anytime they are available. Or grow-your-own from seeds; every 2-3 weeks, scatter seeds in the garden or in a container. Provide morning sun, and then some afternoon shade during the hot, summer months. Remember to harvest the outer leaves regularly.

A is for Aquilegia, commonly referred to as columbine. A favorite spring bloomer for woodland and rock gardens or perennial beds and borders, Aquilegia 'Origami Red & White' delights with large upright flowers on compact plants. This herbaceous perennial grows best in sun or light shade where the soil is moist, yet well-drained. Hardy in zone 2-9 (we are considered zone 7), 'Origami Red & White' will grow 14-16" tall. Plant if you like to attract hummingbirds to your garden.
