Just a few more days to go! April 20th is considered the last average frost date for our gardening area. Remember - frosts can still occur after April 20th. Bottom line - it's still too early to plant your favorite tender annuals or vegetables in the garden or landscape. But if you do, keep a close eye on the weather and cover tender plants if necessary. May 15th is considered the 'safe' planting date!
figs
Did you uncover your fig tree? It's time!

It's time to clean and ready your pots for spring and summer plantings (if you didn't last fall). Here's a time-trusted solution for cleaning terra cotta/clay pots: in a tub or basin, mix 9 parts warm water with 1 part bleach. Soak pots to loosen any debris (30 minutes should be enough). If necessary, use a brush to remove any remaining residue. Rinse; then dry in the sun. When you're ready to plant, your pots will be waiting.

Check stored bulbs - cannas, elephant ears, & dahlias - for any signs of rot. Bulbs that are soft or mushy should be discarded. You can start these bulbs indoors for transplanting to the garden in late May. BTW - fresh bulbs and rhizomes are now available at Martin Viette.

If you haven't already, fertilize trees and shrubs in the garden and landscape. Use Holly-tone for all acid-loving plants; Plant-tone for all others. Be sure to read and follow label directions on the packages.

Beautiful, amazing, and mesmerizing are often-used adjectives to describe the flowers of Itoh peonies. Itoh peonies are named for Toichi Itoh, the first person to successfully cross an herbaceous peony with a tree peony in the 1940's.

Itohs offer the best of both worlds - all the assets of herbaceous peonies and tree peonies are combined into one fabulous plant. Itohs have strong stems to support several (or more) flowers per stem; handsome foliage that remains through the growing season; a longer period of bloom - often a month or more; fragrance with some varieties; and hardiness for Long Island gardens.

Plant Itohs in full sun and fertile, well-drained soils. Good gardeners will amend their existing soil with compost or composted manure prior to planting. A fertilizer with phosphorous should be added at planting time. Note - Itohs are NOT heavy feeders; one application in spring is adequate. Plant them right the first time as Itohs do not like to transplanted! Provide adequate soil moisture. Itohs do die back to the ground in late fall; cut back any remaining leaves then.

Remember the saying, 'look with your eyes, not with your hands'? Not true when you're talking about rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), a true 'touch-me plant' that is adored for its fragrant needle-like foliage that's used for culinary, medicinal and aromatic purposes.

How to grow: Rosemary likes bright, sunny locations with well-drained soils. A few options for growing: You can remove its container and direct plant rosemary in the garden or grow it in a pot or planter. If you have a tendency to overwater (not good for rosemary) use clay pots; avoid plastic pots that retain excess moisture. Some gardeners will leave rosemary in its original container and sink it into the garden.

Formally known as Rosmarinus officinalis, rosemary prefers warm summers and mild, dry winters - think Mediterranean. Which brings us to hardiness. Rosemary is hardy in zones 8-10; however the cultivars 'Arp' and 'Salem' are reported hardy to Zone 7. (Most of Long Island is zone 7 or colder.) A word to the wise: if we have a severe winter on Long Island, they may not survive. There are many varieties to choose from - some offering deeper blue/purple flowers, others with more fragrance, some creep and spread, while others are upright.
crabgrass
As the horticultural saying goes. . .when forsythia is in full bloom, it's time to apply a pre-emergent crabgrass control to the lawn. So, if forsythia is screaming with yellow flowers in your neck of the woods, apply a pre-emergent control now. (Be prepared to make a second application later this spring.)

It's so much easier to control crabgrass with a pre-emergent material. If you're seeding any bare spots in the lawn, make sure that you use a product that can be applied in conjunction with seeding. Not sure? Ask us.

A word to the wise: Once crabgrass germinates and takes over, post-emergent materials can be used but they are not as effective and can discolor certain grass types. Plus, crabgrass sticks out like a sore thumb - its color, texture, and habit is completely contrary to our typical home lawn grasses.

If you're using a pre-emergent crabgrass control, always read the entire label and follow all directions to a tee. Here's some good advice regarding pesticide labels - read the label first, then apply.
