Much needed rain (yes, it's been dry) and cooler temperatures are here for a day or two. Worth repeating - we are still a week (plus a few days!) away from the last average frost date of April 20th. This is an average, not a hard fast date (translation - frosts can still occur after April 20th!). Bottom line - it's still too early to plant your favorite tender annuals or vegetables in the garden or landscape. But if you do, keep a close eye on the weather and cover tender plants if necessary. May 15th is considered the 'safe' planting date!

Be on the lookout for weeds sprouting in landscape beds and borders. Not sure what the weed is or how to control it? Bring it to us; we'll identify it and give you choices for dealing with it!

Don't throw out your Easter lily; it's a perennial! Good gardeners will recycle their EL in the garden and allow it to rebloom every spring.

Did you: prune back roses? Remove protective mulch from perennial beds and borders? Ready your tools as the gardening season begins to grow? Sharpen the blades of your lawn mower for the greatly anticipated first cut?

What is that early spring plant? It has bright colorful flowers that bloom in rock gardens or spill over walls, and it looks so carefree and old-fashioned. No spring garden is complete without Phlox subulata, commonly referred to as creeping phlox. Here's why: hardy in zones 2-8 (we're zone 7) for many to enjoy in their gardens; tolerates drought and heat; prefers full sun locations with well-drained soils. Plus it's virtually pest-free; another good reason to plant varieties of Phlox subulata in your garden. Pictured: Phlox subulata 'Purple Beauty'

Creeping phlox makes a statement when used as a groundcover in the border, along walkways or in rock gardens. It's a low-grower, so place it in the foreground so it can be seen and enjoyed. A fresh shipment has just arrived with many colorful varieties to choose from!

Pieris japonica, the Japanese Pieris or Andromeda (as most people call it), is a popular plant found growing in many Long Island gardens.

When considering Pieris japonica for the landscape, proper placement is important! Avoid hot, overexposed sunny locations that can cause problems with Lacebug, an insidious pest of Pieris. Better to plant where Japanese Pieris has some escape from the intensity of summer afternoon sun; partial shade is preferred. Think of Pieris as an under story shrub and plant accordingly. Soils: Acidic, moist yet well-drained soils are a must (avoid soils that are poorly drained). To improve existing soils, amend with organic matter or compost prior to planting. Holly-toneŽ can be used to fertilize Pieris now; read and follow label directions for rates.

A few more care tips: Any needed pruning should be done soon after flowering; they're in flower right now. If you prune too late in the season, you'll prune off next year's flower buds. Apply two inches of organic mulch around the plant (but not touching the crown of the plant) to conserve needed soil moisture.

If you live and garden in deer country, take note that Japanese Pieris is deer resistant!

bittercress

Another week; another weed! Be on the lookout for hairy bittercress in spring lawns! Its seeds germinate in cool moist soils (think spring). And since it reproduces by seed, your best bet is to tackle this weed when young and NOT let it go to flower. Hand pull in landscape beds and borders or use an herbicide to control in home lawns - spot treat where needed.
