Itchy to get your hands dirty? You can plant cool season vegetables in the garden or planters now. Lettuce, beets, onions, kale, arugula, Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard and broccoli are ideal candidates for planting this weekend. It's time to start seeds of warm season veggies - tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants - in the house. Transplanting outside in the garden is still 5 weeks away. We have all necessary ingredients for seed starting success!
It's been tough times for landscape plants - Hurricane Sandy, snow storms, and nor'easters - to name a few. Give your plants a needed shot-in-the-arm; fertilize all, including roses, now. Keep it simple - use Holly-tone for acid-loving plants; Plant-tone for everything else.
Before you dig-in to gardening this spring. . .Check your tools, and clean and sharpen them if needed. Our Garden Center carries a complete line of comfortable gardening tools for every need.

Viola 'Etain', a perennial viola, is prized for its beautiful and fragrant lemony-yellow flowers with lavender edgings. Hardy to Zone 6 (we are Zone 7), 'Etain' does well as an edging plant in borders or along walkways, or in rock gardens or planters. A compact plant, expect it to grow 8-10" high.
'Etain' is best grown in light to moderate shade with fertile soil that is moist, yet well-drained. Dreamy flowers, expect heavy blooming in spring and summer; then sporadically through fall. Tips: deadhead regularly to encourage flowering; leggy plants can be cut back in mid-summer for fall bloom.

It's spring - the birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, & yes, the weeds are appearing! Purple deadnettle (PDN) is a winter annual weed that flowers in early spring. PDN is easily identified by its square stems (think mint family!) and newer, triangular leaves that are reddish/purplish in color. Purple deadnettle (PDN) can be easily confused with henbit. The difference: henbit leaves are generally lobed with deeper purple flowers. What can you do? Do not allow weeds to flower and produce seeds; hand pull where practical. Mow lawns regularly throughout the growing season. Water, fertilize, and mow for a healthy, thick lawn - the best defense against weeds! Chemical controls can be applied now (make sure it's labeled to control PDN); always read and follow label directions to a tee BEFORE applying any pesticide.

Last weekend! 'The Painted Garden', the 2013 theme for the Macy's Flower Show, is thrilling visitors with tens of thousands of colorful flowers and foliage. Stroll through the huge tent that showcases this beautiful flower show - right in Herald Square. Enjoy the ever popular store windows on Broadway that dazzle the visitor with amazing scenery! Adore shoes? Then you'll love the 9.5' tall shoe planted with thousands of sedums located in the shoe department on the 2nd floor (the largest shoe department in the world!).
