As rose growth resumes after a long winter's rest, it's time to prune! Always use clean, sharp pruners to remove any dead or diseased canes. Healthy canes can be trimmed back, as well. And if you grow low maintenance carpet or knock-out rose types, they should be pruned back heavily now. Short and sweet: if your roses need a good pruning, NOW is the time to do it!
Bare spots in the lawn? Rake out and reseed with a high quality grass seed now. Bare areas are an invitation for weeds to move in and take over.
Remove any winter protective mulch (evergreen bows and salt hay) from perennial and rose borders. Doing so will allow the soil to warm as new growth begins to push.

We can get you out of a jam! If you forgot to buy and plant tulips, daffodils or hyacinth bulbs last fall (fall planting that many didn't do, thanks to 'Sandy'), you can still enjoy their blossoms this spring. Pots and flats of these flowering beauties, in bud and bloom, are available in our annuals department. Perfect for planting in containers, garden beds and window boxes. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries - perfect for planting now in the garden - have arrived in The Barn at Martin Viette. These boxed bare-root varieties are easy to plant, easier to enjoy, and delicious and healthy to eat. Choose a sunny (at least 6 hours per day) location with well-drained soil. Remember, newly-planted material needs regular watering. A soaker hose will deliver water to where it's needed most- the roots. |

'The Painted Garden', the 2013 theme for the Macy's Flower Show, is thrilling visitors with tens of thousands of colorful flowers and foliage. Stroll through the huge tent that showcases this beautiful flower show - right in Herald Square. Enjoy the ever popular store windows on Broadway that dazzle the visitor with amazing scenery! Love shoes? Then you'll love the 9.5' tall shoe planted with thousands of sedums located in the shoe department on the 2nd floor (the largest shoe department in the world!). Ireland Gannon Associates, Martin Viette Nurseries landscape design division, is proud to be part of the creative team for the Macy's shows in Chicago and Washington, DC too. The show is open now through Sunday, April 7th. Note: Macy's Herald Square is closed Easter Sunday.
