pansy
Happy first (full day) of spring! Before you reach for your tools and head to the garden, think about readying your muscles for the fun chores ahead. Stretch, bend and condition those arm and leg muscles (each day) that have enjoyed a long winter's nap! Ease into things; make your 'to-do list' and prioritize. Even large chores can be broken down into manageable pieces. Take things in moderation; the chores will still be there waiting for you.
buddleia
Prune butterfly bush before it begins to grow. Large, overgrown shrubs will benefit from a good haircut!

Spring bulbs are making their presence known in the garden. Fertilize NOW before they bloom.

Did you plant your peas on St. Patrick's Day? Don't stop there; sow seeds of cool season veggies indoors for transplanting to the garden next month.

Continue to plant cool season annuals in planters, window boxes, and garden beds for a burst of color - pansies, ranunculus, hyacinths, daffodils, tulips and more. English ivy gives the finishing touch.

pink frost
Sometimes a hot plant seems to come out of nowhere. Wow, where have you been all these years? Hellebores are the "it" plant right now. Yes, we've known them all along, but not these hellebores. The exciting new hybrids come with netted bluish-green foliage and creamy pastel flower colors flushed with contrasting tones. The breeders have been having a heyday with hellebores, and now every gardener just has to have several in their gardens.

What garden couldn't use some flower color December through April? Neither rain, or sleet, nor snow will stop hellebores from putting on their fabulous winter and early spring show. Hellebores are happiest when used in landscape beds or borders, woodland gardens, or in planters. For dramatic effect, use them in mass plantings under trees. And as beautiful as they are outside, select varieties of hellebores make great cut flowers for display in the home.

Hellebores, low maintenance, perennial and long-lived in Long Island gardens, are appreciated for their attractive evergreen foliage. After their 3- to 4-month parade of flowers, blooms generally turn to green (often flushed bronzy-pink) and remain on the plant, giving the garden six months of interest.

Right plant, right place! Plant hellebores in well-drained, slightly alkaline soils. Clay soils should be amended with organic matter, such as compost or composted manure, prior to planting. Soils that are continually wet or slow to drain should be avoided. Hellebores are better suited to areas that receive morning sun, followed by afternoon shade - never full sun. Plant them in the right location the first time; they don't like to be moved and replanted. Not heavy-feeders, fertilize sparingly late winter or early spring with Plant-tone. And if you garden in deer country, hellebores are deer-resistant.

Just arrived - Hellebore 'Pink Frost'! This beautiful hellebore has burgundy-colored stems that showcase reddish pink buds that open to light pink, and then mature to a rich burgundy red. Rich, green leaves with a silvery sheen. Grows 12- 24" in height and width.
