A very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year from all your friends at Martin Viette Nurseries! We will be closed on Christmas Day and reopen on Wednesday, December 26th at 9am for our popular after-Christmas 50% off sale.
Winter 'officially' arrives tomorrow, December 21 at 6:12am. The winter solstice is known as the shortest day of the year; after that, the days slowly begin to get longer. Warm thoughts - the Spring Equinox arrives on March 20 at 7:02am - only 90 days away!
wilt pruf
If you bought Wilt-Pruf to extend the life of your Christmas tree and wreath, it has another valuable purpose. Wilt-Pruf can be used to protect desirable evergreens from the ravages of Old Man Winter. Wilt-Pruf must be applied when air temperatures are above freezing, and remain so for 24 hours. A second application needs to be made in early to mid February to assure that plants will be protected for the remainder of the winter.

Keep water in the reservoir of Christmas tree stands.

As tempted as you might be, avoid fertilizing houseplants during the winter months. Resume feeding (according to package directions) in late February.

Treat your feathered friends to a bag of bird seed for the Holidays.
Poinsettia
Can you imagine Christmas without poinsettias? For many, their annual appearance celebrates the Holiday Season. And it's no surprise; poinsettias are hands down the most popular holiday plants. Reds, pinks, whites, marbled, speckled - there are so many to choose from thanks to the tremendous amount of interest in poinsettia plant breeding. Our greenhouse is a wonderland of beautiful poinsettias in all the popular sizes and holiday colors.

Poinsettias grow best when daytime temperatures are between 70-75 degrees F. Night temperatures shouldn't dip below 65 degrees F. To avoid leaf drop; never expose them to drafts or excessive drying heat! A few words about watering: Allow poinsettias to dry ever so slightly between waterings. (But never bone dry!) After a few minutes, discard any excess water that collects in the saucer.

It's time to debunk that old wife's tale about poinsettias being deadly poisonous. Generally speaking, they are considered a non-toxic houseplant, but this is not to suggest that you eat them. According to Cornell University, poinsettias possess a sap that can be irritating to some. For detailed information, click here!
