Not sure what to get the green thumbs (or wannabe's) on your Christmas list? Here are some suggestions to (hopefully) make it easier!
A few sharp ideas - new pruners, loppers or saws! Every gardener should own a pair of Felco pruners; they truly make pruning a pleasure, not a chore. Many models are available - including left-handed pruners. Loppers (think of them as very long handled pruners) tackle larger pruning jobs - reach in and make the cut - every time! A pruning saw (thanks to Hurricane Sandy) should be in every gardener's tool bag!
For the birds - houses, feeders and birdseed - to keep our feathered friends warm and well fed this winter.
Tell the recipient to get a grip on their gardening chores with our thermals, rose, or work gloves. Many styles, many sizes to choose from. BTW - there are gloves for the little gardeners on your list, too.
Not sure what to get the gardener that has everything? How about a day at the Philadelphia Flower Show on Thursday, March 7th, 2013! Can you imagine Christmas without poinsettias? For many, their annual appearance marks the beginning of the Holiday Season. And it's no surprise; poinsettias are hands down the most popular holiday plants. Reds, pinks, whites, marbled, speckled - there are so many to choose from thanks to the tremendous amount of interest in poinsettia plant breeding. Our greenhouse is a wonderland of beautiful poinsettias in all the popular sizes and holiday colors.
Poinsettias grow best when daytime temperatures are between 70-75 degrees F. Night temperatures shouldn't dip below 65 degrees F. To avoid leaf drop; never expose them to drafts or excessive drying heat! A few words about watering: Allow poinsettias to dry ever so slightly between waterings. (But never bone dry!) After a few minutes, discard any excess water that collects in the saucer.
It's time to debunk that old wife's tale about poinsettias being deadly poisonous. Generally speaking, they are considered a non-toxic houseplant, but this is not to suggest that you eat them. According to Cornell University, poinsettias possess a sap that can be irritating to some. For detailed information, click here!

The Interfaith Nutrition Network, 'The INN', is the largest human service agency of its kind on Long Island, providing daily assistance to the many needy people living in our communities. Their shelters and soup kitchens are always in need of donations. We ask for your help throughout the winter by donating non-perishable food items. A collection bin is located outside the main doors at Martin Viette's. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
