gardeningtip
It's time to feed landscape shrubs. Use Holly-tone on rhododendrons, azaleas, and other acidic soil plants. Plant-tone can be used on all other shrubs. Read and follow label directions for amounts to use.

It's time to clean and ready birdfeeders. As natural food continues to disappear, birds will look for a supplied source of feed!

Problems with scale, aphids and other pests this past growing season? Consider using horticultural oil as a dormant application to eliminate these pests. At the time of application, air temperatures must be above 40 degrees and remain so for 24 hours. (Keep an eye on the forecast!) Be sure to read and follow all label directions to a tee before you apply.

Perfect for teachers and grandparents, force paperwhites for holiday gifts.
hellebore
What garden couldn't use some flower power in December and January? Neither rain, or sleet, nor snow will stop Hellebore 'Jacob' from putting on a fabulous winter show with its burgundy stems that showcase beautiful flowers that begin white and mature to deep pink. The first of the hellebores to bloom, 'Jacob' is ideal for holiday decorating or gift-giving. Think: 'In your home for the holidays; in your garden for a lifetime.'

Right plant, right place! Hellebores are happiest when used in landscape beds or borders, woodland gardens, or in planters. For dramatic effect, use them in mass plantings under trees.

Plant hellebores in well-drained, slightly alkaline soils. Clay soils should be amended with organic matter, such as compost or composted manure, prior to planting. Soils that are continually wet or slow to drain should be avoided. Hellebores are better suited to areas that receive morning sun, followed by afternoon shade - never full sun. Plant them in the right location the first time; they don't like to be moved and replanted. Not heavy-feeders, fertilize sparingly late winter or early spring with Plant-tone. And if you garden in deer country, hellebores are deer-resistant.

trees
Oh, Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree. . .Yes, the Noble, Fraser and Balsam Christmas trees at Martin Viette are beautiful, farm fresh, and fragrant. Like trivia? Here are some cut Christmas tree facts and trivia for you to enjoy this Holiday Season.

A Presidential Precedent In 1856, President Franklin Pierce was the first president to set-up a Christmas tree in the White House. President Calvin Coolidge established the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on the White House Lawn in 1932. Fast forward to 2012: more than 31 million U.S. homes will enjoy a fresh cut Christmas tree this year.

Did you know? -Christmas tree farms are environmentally friendly! They serve as wildlife habitats, provide needed oxygen, and help with soil stability. -Christmas trees are renewable! They are grown as an agricultural crop for a specific purpose (just like the food we eat). After a crop of Christmas trees are harvested, new seedlings are planted for future harvests. -Christmas trees are recyclable! They can be chipped into mulch; their cut boughs can be used as mulch; trees are used after the Holidays to stabilize dunes and beaches.
Play it safe this Holiday season; here are a few pointers worth considering. Keep the tree in a cool, protected location in a bucket of water until you're ready to bring it indoors. (If you cannot stand the tree in water, make a fresh cut to the butt end of the tree just before bringing it inside. This will allow the tree to pull needed moisture.) Once indoors, always keep a full reservoir of water in the tree stand! The larger the tree, the more water it will use. If your stand and reservoir are too small, buy a larger one. Our homes tend to be very dry causing the tree to lose water continually. Remember - a dry tree is a dangerous tree!

Check wires on any lit decorations BEFORE you use them. Any that are worn or frayed should NOT be used. Do not attempt to fix or rewire; throw away and buy new!

A collection bin is located outside the main doors at Martin Viette's. Your donations will be brought to the INN for distribution. We thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
