It's still too early to throw in the trowel (although it's understandable that anything 'gardening' has taken a back seat since the storms). There are a few 'fun' things you can do, especially with the kids! Paper whites (a fragrant relative of daffodils) are easy to plant and coax into bloom for the upcoming Holidays. (Hint, hint: planted paper whites are ideal for children to give to grandparents or teachers.) Amaryllis, another fun flowering bulb with its amazing trumpet-like flowers, is a great gift to give or receive. And our paper white and amaryllis bulb kits make the gift giving super easy!
Last week's snow has ended our 2012 growing season; a sad reminder that any remaining annuals in the garden are now history or compost.
If you haven't already, it's time to shut down the automatic sprinkler system for the season (before a freeze). Keep a hose handy for any needed winter watering; remember to pay special attention to any new plants added to the garden or landscape.
Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs in the garden. After all the destruction from the storms, spring blooming daffodils, tulips, and more will be a welcomed sight.

Thinking about overwintering prized cannas or elephant ears? Nothing ventured; nothing gained! If you want to try your luck in 2013, you will need to dig up and store elephant ear rhizomes and dahlia tubers now. Carefully lift the rhizome or tuber, remove any remaining soil with a hose, and then let it dry in a sunny location for a few hours. Store the rhizome or tuber in a flat, crate, or open box filled with vermiculite or peat moss in a frost-free location (it cannot freeze!) - perhaps a cool garage or basement. Avoid plastic bags or containers that can trap moisture. Check periodically for any signs of rot and if found, discard. For elephant ears: another option would be to keep it in its original pot and store in a cool location as a dormant plant during the winter. To do this, cut back the stems to within a few inches of the rhizome, leave it in its pot and store in a cool garage or basement.
Gardeners (novice and experienced) report mixed results with overwintering elephant ears and dahlias. If you're not successful, there will always be potted plants, rhizomes and tubers to buy in 2013.

After great deliberation, we have decided to cancel the 2012 Interfaith Nutrition Network Benefit at Martin Viette Nurseries on Saturday, November 17, 2012. The loss of power (and the uncertainty of when it will be fully restored) and structural damage to part of our facilities dictated this unfortunate decision.
However, you can still help the INN in several ways. If you've already sent your check for tickets for the Benefit and do not want it sent back to you, we will forward it to the INN. (100% of your check goes to the INN.) If you would like your check returned, please contact us at (516) 922-5530.
Also, our special 2012 INN Christmas ornament will be for sale throughout November and December in our East Norwich and Americana Manhasset stores. As always, all the profits from the sale of these beautiful ornaments are given to the INN.
Most important: with so many of our neighbors and communities in need, our annual food drive for the INN's soup kitchens and pantries is critical. Please bring any non-perishables or toiletries to Martin Viette Nurseries; we will gladly deliver all donations to the INN.
