Online resources

Since 2012, the Library Service has saved £2.5m and now needs to save a further £0.5m. Previously, savings have been made from back office support, management costs, a more self-service approach, some service reductions and other efficiencies across the service.

Now, we have to make some tough decisions and we are asking people for their opinions about the options facing us.

Proposals include a combination of reducing opening hours at larger libraries, reducing management and professional staff and spending less on new library stock.

Other options are still being discussed by the Council (in particular, budget proposals for the Mobile Library Service).

National Libraries Day - coming soon...
It's National Libraries Day on Saturday 6 February 2016!

National Libraries Day celebrates why libraries matter. This year will see the fifth National Libraries Day, a day of events and activities promoting the difference that modern libraries make to people, families and communities across the UK. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to find out what's happening at your local library.
Changes to concessionary borrower charges
From this week, standard borrower charges will apply to concessionary readers when borrowing DVDs. Overdue charges on these items will also apply at the standard rate. No other concessionary charges will be affected. The borrowing of CDs, Adult Spoken Word Books, Junior Spoken Word Books and cassettes will remain free, with no overdue charges, to those unable to visit the library or have difficulties with printed books.
Two new online reference resources

From today, you can access two new online reference resources. Oxford Short Introductions offers concise introductions to a diverse range of subject areas. All the titles provide serious introductions to their topic written by experts in the field. Oxford Bibliographies offer research guides to subject-specific scholarship, combining the features of an annotated bibliography and a high-level encyclopaedia.
Easy search facility for eAudiobooks
You can now search more easily for eAudiobooks through the library catalogue. All eAudiobooks from our three collections - OneClickDigital, BorrowBox and Bolinda - are available through the full catalogue and a special eAudiobook section.

Adult Care and Support Guidance
Most people want to stay in their own home and maintain their independence for as long as possible. The Equipment and Devices advice leaflet gives the practical steps people can take to help you remain in control and the different equipment and daily living aids available. The Adult Care and Support Guide 2016 is also a good starting point to help people think about their care and support options and provides information on where to go next, what people can do themselves and who to contact. Find copies at your local library.
Cambridge Volunteer Centre - drop in events
The Cambridge Volunteer Centre run drop in sessions in the foyer of Cambridge Central Library the first Saturday of each month, 11am to 1pm and they will next be there on 9 January.  They promote over 500 volunteering opportunities and help people find volunteering that interests them. In addition to the drop-in they offer one to one sessions during weekdays and telephone or online assistance. For further information visit www.volunteercambridge.org or call 01223 356549.
Chesterton Workhouse talk
Helen Harwood will give a talk about the Chesterton Workhouse at the next Engage in the Afternoon event at Great Shelford Library. The event will take place on 27 January, 2pm-3.30pm.

Tickets are free and available from the library or by calling 0345 045 5225.
