Arts Alive in Libraries

Arts Alive in Libraries is a project funded by Arts Council England in North Cambridgeshire to offer a wide range of exciting events and workshops.

The project covers eight libraries: Chatteris, March, Whittlesey, Wisbech, Ramsey, Sawtry, Yaxley and Littleport. In each library, groups have come together to decide how they will spend their allocation of the funding.

Activities kicked off on Saturday 21 February with a Chocolate Film Festival at Whittlesey Community Hub. Later this month a tour of Casting the Runes will visit six libraries, with R.M.Parry dramatically performing the ghost stories of M.R.James.

Other wonderful activities coming soon include manga animation workshops, lyric writing, graffiti workshops, poetry events and book festivals.

Developing our approach for the future: Stakeholder engagement and consultation

We are currently undertaking a review of our Library Service to develop a strategy for the future in order to meet tough financial savings. We hope to raise awareness and understanding of the full scope and challenges we are facing, our proposed way forward and priorities for the future of libraries in Cambridgeshire.

We want to know whether you think our priorities are right, or whether there are any alternative approaches you feel we should be considering. We'll be talking to communities later in the year but this initial consultation phase is taking place with key stakeholder groups.

Making the Most of Your Library - Find My Past

Interested in genealogy? You can now access the fantastic Find My Past genealogy and history resources at your local library.

The site contains the entire index to births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales from 1837-2001, and offers more than 1.7 billion international family history records from the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and beyond with records going back to 1200.

CambWifi

As part of Connecting Cambridgeshire's work to improve and extend public WiFi in Cambridge and surrounding areas, the free CambWifi network is now available at most of our libraries. The new network brings improved WiFi access to all libraries and better download limits at many larger libraries. The programme to switchover all remaining libraries is due to be completed by the end of March.

Stirling bomber talk

Join us for an Illustrated talk by Roger Leivers, on Tuesday 10 March, dedicated to the crew of Stirling N3703 and through their story, the rest of XV Squadron based at RAF Wyton.

You will hear about the men, their lives before the war, how they came together as a crew and some of the amazing operations they took part in, and of course, what happened to them.

Shakespeare at the George events at Huntingdon Library

To celebrate Shakespeare Week, Huntingdon Library will host a free workshop given by Victoria Williams, who is a voice coach for the Royal Shakespeare Company, on Saturday 21 March, from 3pm to 4pm.

The event is part of Shakespeare at the George, with a display and activities for children also taking place at the library.

A history of the First Eastern General Hospital 1914 - 1929

Local resident and historian Philomena Guillebaud, will be at Central Library on 25 March (2pm), as she takes you on a journey through this historic Cambridge area, from the early days as a College sports ground through the dark days of the First World War and beyond, as inhabitants of the city slowly recovered from the ravages of war.

Type 2 Together

Diabetes UK have launched a new peer support & education service called Type 2 Together. The new groups will connect people who have diabetes in their local areas. The relaxed and informal group sessions will be led by volunteers who themselves are living with diabetes and are trained to share their advice and experiences.

If you are interested in joining a group, email us or call 0345 123 2399 to speak with your regional Co-ordinator about how to get involved.

Little Yellow Ducks project

This year the Women's Institute (WI) has a campaign called Time to Talk encouraging everyone to tell loved ones their wishes regarding organ donation. Carrying a Donor Card or registering on the Organ Donation Register is not enough. The consent of your next of kin supersedes your wishes unless you have made it known to them. Look out for an influx of Little Yellow Ducks in libraries on or around the 25 April. If you find one please take it home, register it, and spend a little time thinking about your wishes regarding organ donation and then most importantly, tell someone!
