READ IT FORWARD
this summer to get ready to meet
A.S. King as part of the Fourth Annual Greater Rochester Teen Read!
Teen Services Librarians across the County are once again celebrating Teen Read Week* (October 13-19, 2013) with the Fourth Annual Greater Rochester Teen Read starring Amy S. King and her novel, Everybody Sees the Ants! To get ready for Amy's visits to our area, (including here at Fairport Public Library on October 14th!), the Friends of Fairport Public Library are providing ten copies of the book for a special Read it Forward program this summer! Teens ages 13-18 are invited to come to the Library to get a copy of the book, read it, and then pass it along to their friends! Already read Everybody Sees the Ants? Or if all the copies are taken, we have a bonus book! A.S. King has a story in Dear Bully: 70 Authors Tell Their Stories. We have ten copies of this book to share as well! Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. To make sure as many readers have an opportunity as possible, only one copy of either book per reader/family. The library also has multiple additional copies of each title that will be available to check out.
Read it Forward "Rules" for Teen Readers:
- Read the book.
- o OPTIONAL - comment in the book and/or tweet and email comments to @RIF_GRTR and MCLSReadItForward@gmail.com.
- Tell your friend how much you loved/hated/whatever it and give him/her your copy to read.
- Tell your friend after he/she reads it, to pass it on to another friend to read...and to keep the Read It Forward theme going.
- Meet A. S. (Amy) King to talk about these books! Amy will be at the Fairport Public Library on Monday, October 14th (no school that day!), 3:00pm-4:30pm with snacks provided by the Friends of Fairport Public Library.
Fourth Annual Greater Rochester Teen Read Featured Books
Lucky Linderman didn't ask for his life. He didn't ask his grandfather not to come home from the Vietnam War. He didn't ask for a father who never got over it. He didn't ask for a mother who keeps pretending their dysfunctional family is fine. And he didn't ask to be the target of Nader McMillan's relentless bullying, which has finally gone too far.
But Lucky has a secret--one that helps him wade through the mundane torture of his life. In his dreams, Lucky escapes to the war-ridden jungles of Laos--the prison his grandfather couldn't escape--where Lucky can be a real man, an adventurer, and a hero. It's dangerous and wild, and it's a place where his life just might be worth living. But how long can Lucky keep hiding in his dreams before reality forces its way inside?
Michael L. Printz Honor recipient A.S. King's smart, funny and boldly original writing shines in this powerful novel about learning to cope with the shrapnel life throws at you--and taking a stand against it.
Discover how Lauren Kate transformed the feeling of that one mean girl getting under her skin into her first novel, how Lauren Oliver learned to celebrate ambiguity in her classmates and in herself, and how R.L. Stine turned being the "funny guy" into the best defense against the bullies in his class.
Today's top authors for teens come together to share their stories about bullying-as silent observers on the sidelines of high school, as victims, and as perpetrators-in a collection at turns moving and self-effacing, but always deeply personal.
*Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Teen Read Week started in 1998. Libraries across the world celebrate Teen Read Week with a variety of special events and programs aimed at encouraging teens to read for pleasure and to visit their libraries for free reading materials.
