Thoughts on Orlando
by Rev. John Mollet

Early last Sunday morning, a gunman went into a club in Orlando, Florida and killed 49 innocent partiers and injured over 50 others. It has been deemed an act of terrorism and hatred. Many of us at church on Sunday had not heard about the tragedy. I, for example, had gotten up early for church, did not watch television while getting ready, the newspaper had not arrived before I left and I walked to the church, so I didn't listen to the radio in the car. I had no idea anything of such horror had happened just hours before. I didn't even hear it being discussed during our morning gatherings. Maybe we have become too used to acts of terrorism and hatred happening. Maybe they have become so commonplace they are not breaking news. But I wish the church staff had known so we could have responded to the hurt and pain going on in those very moments in our worship services.

You have heard the speculation of possible motive(s). As of this E-News, no concrete motive(s) have been discovered. The speculation covers a number of possibilities, none of them being exclusive from the others. It was an act of an "Islamic" radical enticed over social media and the internet to hate the country of his birth and meant to instill fear in the hearts of all Americans. (I place the word Islamic in quotes, because I do believe this act to be far from what true Muslims believe.) It was an act of hatred against gay and lesbian people. Being Latino/Latina night at the club, some are saying it is an act of hatred against Hispanics and those who are undocumented in our country. The word common to all of these speculations is "hate."

At Annual Conference this year, there was a piece of legislation passed entitled "A Resolution Towards Gracefully Living Together in the Central Texas Conference." It came from our conference's delegation in response to the debate at this year's General Conference on the issue of homosexuality in the church. It continues to be one of the most divisive issues facing our denomination. After several "whereas" phrases, the resolution states: "Therefore be it resolved: That the 2016 session of the Central Texas Conference is committed to living gracefully with one another in the midst of our theological diversity and differing understandings of human sexuality. We understand that grace always prioritizes mercy over judgment, reconciliation over division, and humility over pride. We hope this kind of grace will continue to be the defining marker of the people called United Methodist in the Central Texas Annual Conference."

During the debate over this resolution, it was asked if it is necessary for us to legislate something that should be a part of every Christian's everyday life. I think following the events of last Sunday morning, the answer to that question is "Yes."  We must all consciously and deliberately live in peace, grace and love with all our brothers and sisters.

In I John 4:18a John writes, "There is no fear in love, and perfect love drives out fear...." Keep love in your hearts, so there is no room for fear. And commit yourselves to graceful living in the name of Christ our Lord. Remember the "fruit" Paul describes when the Spirit of God is alive in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Please join our staff in keeping all those suffering from the tragedy in Orlando in your prayers.

Grace and peace,

John

Church News

We'd like to share the following updates regarding church staff:
  • Rev. Grant Palma will join our pastoral staff the first of July. His first Sunday with us will be July 3 (remember: ONE service at 11 AM that morning, followed by lunch). Read more about Grant...
  • As we announced last week, Jason Chavarrķa will join us as our new Director of Music Ministries in July! Read more about Jason...
  • Wren Robinson has let us know that he and Jill will be moving to Garden City, Kansas, where he will be on staff at FUMC Garden City. Some of you may know that this is where their middle daughter, Neely, lives with her family, and it is the church where she serves. Please pray for Wren and Jill as they plan their move and make their way to Kansas!
  • We are still on the hunt for our new Business Administrator and Youth Director. Please continue to lift these needs in your prayers. If you know of someone who may be interested, please direct them to our website - www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/jobs.
  • We'd like to remind you that our new Finance Director, Anderia Lopez, can be reached at anderial@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x150. During this time without a Business Administrator, Anderia is also handling scheduling activities on the church calendar.
  • Also, we'd like to let you know of the following changes to staff offices: Debbie Price, Missions Coordinator, will be moving her office downstairs to where Cindy Ryan was - Room 1005 of the Family Life Center. When Rev. Grant Palma comes in July, he will office where Rev. Jenn Pick has been (Room 2004 of the Family Life Center), and Jenn will move to Debbie's prior office (Room 2006 of the Family Life Center).
  • Our pastors have met together to assign and rearrange responsibilities in light of the gifts that Grant brings to the table. Rev. Armando Alvarado is the contact for Missions. Rev. Jenn Pick will now connect with Altar Guild, Communion Servers, The Well and Women in Transition (these were previously under Cindy). Rev. Grant Palma will oversee Evangelism/Connecting (including new members and Discover the Church), Pastoral Care, Compassion Ministries (including Stephen Ministry), Iron Men and Young Adults.
Our Trustees and Building Committee continue to work on the plan that was set in motion at our Church Conference last year. To date, the Heritage Campus, Heritage parsonage, and house at 509 Ball Street have all sold. In July, the Trustees will host a series of town hall meetings to present their recommendations for the use of the funds from these sales. We continue to work with the City of Grapevine to secure a lease for the Senior Activity Center building, which will be the future home of the Thrift Shop. Then, in August, we hope to present details about needed renovations to Founders Chapel. Stay tuned!

Opportunities to Serve and Give...
Top Need: Benevolence Funds

Our top need for this week is Benevolence Funds. These donations go to help individuals and families in our community who find themselves in financial need. We help pay rent and utilities to get them through a crisis. If you would like to give toward this need, please mark "Benevolence" in the memo of your check, envelope or online gift.

Middle School Mission Trip Needs YOU!

URGENT NEED!! We have 10 kids signed up for Middle School Mission Trip, and two more that have expressed interest. We would like everyone who is interested to be able to go! Yet, they cannot go if we do not have adults. That's where you come in! We are in need of two more work team adults to go on Middle School Mission Trip, July 10-15, to Clyde, Texas. If you are interested in going, please email Patty Bandy pattyb@fumcg.org or Linda McClure at lindam@fumcg.org.

Smile!

We'd just like to remind you that you can give back to the church, simply by signing up for and using AmazonSmile! Father's Day is coming up June 19, so before you order that gadget or tool from Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and designate First United Methodist Church Grapevine as your beneficiary. We actually DO get checks from them! :)

Temporary Home Needed

One of our neighbors, Sharva Huffines, the victim of a fire at Grapevine Housing Authority several months ago, is relocating and in the interim must find a place for about 3 weeks for her dog Linus. He is very friendly, 6 years old, and unneutered. If you would like to fill this need, please contact Bev Campisi (beverlyc@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x140).

Senior Sunday inspired us all, seeing so many of our young people appreciate the influence First Methodist has had on their lives. We heard very passionate messages that made us know the important commitment we have to our children, youth and young adults. Our Campus Angels ministry team is made up of people who want to correspond with those who go away to college to let them know the church does care! If your heart was stirred as we congratulated our 2016 graduates, and if you would like to keep in touch with one of our new college bound or returning college students in the upcoming school year, please sign up online or use the Check-In insert in the bulletin. Questions? Contact Jenna Rosenbaum at jenna.rosenbaum@gmail.com.

UPDATED: God Can for the GRACE Food Pantry

If you would like to donate any of these items, please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.
What Touched You?
Have you been involved in ministry to one of our Villages? Whether you have served in our local Grapevine Village or traveled the world to visit Kenya, Costa Rica or Latvia... we have one question for you: What touched you the most about your experience? Send your answer to Pat Laster (patlaster@verizon.net) or complete our survey at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/mission-survey.

Teresa of Avila was born in 1515 in the Spanish province of Avila. Shortly after the death of her mother, she was sent at the age of 16 to be educated in a convent of Augustinian nuns. After 18 months in the convent Teresa developed what was probably malaria and returned to live with her father. After reading the Letters of St. Jerome she decided to pursue a religious life. Keep reading...>>>
Director's Corner

by Family Ministries Director, Patty Bandy

Each week this summer we are featuring a faith story from one of our youth. This week we are featuring a middle school youth. Here is what she says about her faith and her story:

"I have always grown up in a strong, Christian-based family. But even though I've always been surrounded by Christianity, I find myself coming closer and closer to God every time I go to church. I am constantly learning new things about God and his power. I will admit, I question God and his choices all the time. But that only helps me to understand him more. So if you have questions, ask them. I dare you."-- T.M. 8th grade

Our youth challenge you by asking, "What is your story?"  Know it, Claim it, share it!! Matthew 28:19

High School Mission Trip
Our High School Mission Team is doing great work in Bauxite, Arkansas this week! Yesterday's update said, "Today we had a mid-morning shower that put every team a little behind and some teams soaked. Everyone kept a great attitude and many wheelchair ramps are underway and a roofing job is started." Check out all the photos and updates on their Bauxite Living Center Facebook page... bit.ly/bauxite2016.
