This week at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine | April 27, 2016
Sunday, May 1
Rev. Armando Alvarado will speak in the 8:30, 9:00 & 9:45 AM English and the 11:00 AM Bilingual services.

Rev. John Mollet will speak in the 11:00 AM Confirmation service in the Sanctuary.

"We Believe"

Jesus asks two questions to his disciples, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" and "Who do you say that I am?" It is often easier to answer the first question because we don't have a personal stake in it. What happens though, when Christ asks us, "What about you?" This Sunday, our Confirmation Class answers this question for themselves, and we encourage you to reflect on what you believe as well.

Our Communion Offering this Sunday will go to the Access-Life Expo, an event for our local families living with disabilities. Access-Life is an outdoor adventure for all ages and levels of disabilities. Our church will be donating the water, ice and volunteers to make this the best Expo for the participants. If you wish to make a contribution towards the cost of the ice and water, please indicate "Access Life Expo" in the memo of your check or online gift. Read more about how you can get involved at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/access-life.

Pastoral Appointment

It was announced last Sunday that Rev. Grant Palma has been appointed to join our church staff, effective July 1. Grant has served as Associate Pastor of Arlington Heights UMC in Fort Worth since June 2012. He is a graduate of the Perkins School of Theology at SMU. Grant is passionate about meeting new people within the community and helping them find the path that God is calling them to. In his free time, Grant enjoys spending time with his wife, Samantha, amateur racecar driving, and traveling. We are excited to welcome Grant and Samantha!

A Word from Dr. Cindy Ryan: A Weekend Food Miracle

I am speechless in wonder and delight. Truly. On Sunday, I spoke about the ways God has stirred around in our individual lives and in our church to help us do far more than we could ever dream or imagine.

From the eight pioneer settlers who imagined and prayed the Methodist church in Grapevine into being and how we've grown to 2,800 members with an outreach around the world; to our weekly worship in three venues, four worship styles, in two languages. Our village ministry and how it transformed not just each village, but us.  Our Be Our Guest ministry and how it was born of God stirring around in us asking us to stop feeding ourselves and feed someone else.  We marveled that we have now served over 15,000 hot, homemade meals to people who are really hungry for food, companionship and love.

We talked about the miracle of Weekend Food and how we have grown to now serve over 800 pre-screened economically disadvantaged students in GCISD. We, as the people of God in Grapevine learned eight years ago of hungry kids and we said, "Not on our watch," and we found a way to feed them.

Weekend Food now costs close to $50,000 per school year. We struggle every year to figure out how to pay for this outside our church budget. I shared on Sunday that it is only $2 per week or $72 to sponsor a child for the school year.

I issued a challenge to the people of God. I said, "What if we just took care of this? What if we sponsored children, ahead of time, for the 2016-17 school year? What if we sponsored them in honor or memory of the kids we love?"

I asked you to make it my love offering.  I told you that if you fed these children it would honor my ministry more than anything I could ask for. I told you I didn't want a cookie reception, a plaque or religious gifts.  I just want us to feed these kids.

And guess what? You gave. So far, a total of $38,500 has been given in gifts/commitments. That averages approximately 535 kids sponsored!

I feel like we are not quite finished yet.  Many of you have told me that you still want to sponsor children. We will keep this "love offering" open through June 12 (my last Sunday) or until we reach our goal of sponsoring all 800 children.

What if, with God's help, we sponsored all 800 children?  What if?

Costa Rica Children's Home Quilt Wish List

The Costa Rica mission trip team is excitedly preparing for the upcoming May trip to the Hogar Metodista Children's Home. The children and house moms living at the orphanage are in need of new quilts for the twin beds in each of the rooms. Missionary Lydia Zirkel has identified themes that each of the age groups would enjoy and our team would like to be able to purchase matching quilts for each of the rooms. A $30 donation would provide one twin size quilt for a child or tia. We have collected funds to cover about 18 of the 36 quilts. If you would like to give, mark your check "Costa Rica Quilts" and send it to the church office. You may also donate online by designating Costa Rica in the special gift memo. Thank you!

Instructions for Christian Living Part I
by Nancy Johnson

How many of us have taken our children to a museum only to find their reaction reflects their disinterest and boredom and we find they would prefer to go elsewhere where things are "real"? Some believers also feel this way when they consider reading the Bible regarding it as a religious museum.

When I was reading different articles concerning why we should read the Bible, one author wrote about a seven year old boy who took their family Bible down and asked his Mother, "Is this God's Book?" His Mother replied that indeed it was and after a minute her son said, "...don't you think we might as well send it back to God? We don't use it here, do we?" His reaction may indeed reflect how some people regard God's Book. Keep reading...>>>
