This week at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine | March 9, 2016
The Fifth Sunday of Lent, March 13
Dr. Cindy Ryan preaching in English
Socorro Garcia preaching in Bilingual

From the tempter asking Jesus to turn stones into bread in his wilderness wandering to the stone of the empty tomb being rolled away, the Lenten landscape is full of stones. Ecclesiastes says that there is a time for everything including a time to gather and scatter stones. If we picture everything that is keeping us from God like a stone in our path, we can begin a clearing season of our souls. This year for the 40 days of Lent, you are invited upon a soulful journey of stones.

A Note From Cindy...
Yes, we will lose an hour on Saturday night. Yes, it is Spring Break. It will probably be a gorgeous day after all this rain. But, I invite you to join us in worship anyway as we continue our Journey of Stones. I've been working on a sermon based on John 8:1-11. I've been amazed at what the story has revealed to me. I'd love it if you were there to hear it as we worship God together. ~ Cindy

Our next Service of Healing & Renewal will be this Sunday, March 13, at 6 PM in Founders Chapel. In the book of James 5:13, we read: "Are any of you suffering? Call the elders (members) of the community together, have them lay hands on you, and pray for you." Whatever your need for wholeness - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or relational - you are invited to come and let God begin a good work in you.

Music Ministry Search

The committee to select the next Director of Music Ministries would like to share an update on the process they are undertaking. The search committee is made up of O.C. Hailey, Jenn Pick, John Mollet, Lisa Jones, Kay Green, Mariella Alvarado and Bill Cramer. The position of Director of Music Ministries is of critical importance to the church and our ministry. We know God will lead us to the right decision, and we will be diligent in the process. We have received over 30 applications, which have now been whittled to 12 potential candidates. We ask for the congregation's prayers as we continue this process. Read more details about our philosophy and process...

Stations of the Cross - 6 PM Leach Hall
Worship Service - 7 PM Founders Chapel

This Good Friday, we invite you to remember a day when Love was crucified, to hear the story told from Jesus' betrayal to the loud thud of the stone rolling over the tomb. It is a noisy story that ends in utter silence. This evening takes place in two parts. First you are invited on a self-guided journey through the Stations of the Cross, a visual journey through Jesus' final hours before his death, starting at 6 PM in Leach Hall. Then at 7 PM we gather as a community to hear this story told in Spanish and English, and sing the hymns of our faith as one candle after another is extinguished to mark the darkness of a world before Resurrection.

Opportunities to Serve and Give...
We are excited to fill our worship spaces with the beauty of flowers on Easter Sunday! You may purchase Calla Lilies, Tulips or Hydrangeas by using the Check-In insert in your bulletin on Sundays through March 20. The dedications will be included in a bulletin insert on Easter Sunday morning. If you would like to take your flower home with you, you may pick it up after the 11 AM service on Easter Sunday, March 27. If you don't wish to keep your flower, please indicate that on your order and your flower will be delivered to an ill or home-bound person.

The next chapter of our church's Jesus Calling story is up on their website at
www.jesuscalling.com/blog. Brent and Monica Wicke discuss their mother's cancer journey, remember her strength and determination, and talk about what they are doing today to honor her legacy. Remember that we have a shelf in the church office supplied with copies of Jesus Calling for you to give away. Help us spread the word and spread the love by making it your individual ministry to put a book in the hands of someone who needs it.

Thrift Shop Changeover
The Thrift Shop will close the entire week of March 14, so we can change from winter to spring/summer clothing. Volunteers will work as usual to restock the racks and we will continue to accept and process donations through the Drop Box. The shop will reopen on Tuesday, March 22. If you've ever wondered how the Thrift Shop works, just drop in anytime during changeover week Tuesday, March 15, through Friday, March 18, between 9 and 11:30 AM and get a feel for this amazing mission ministry!

We collected 137 items this week. GRACE is low on several standard stock items, including juice boxes, snacks, canned soup/stew, condensed milk, ramen noodles, canned fruit, condiments and toothpaste. Click here to view the full list (pdf). If you would like to donate any of these items, please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.
Opportunities to Grow...
by Fred Rigdon
Many of the holy habits that we use today, such as the Examen and spiritual discernment, are attributed to Ignatius of Loyola. We don't know whether he originated these practices himself, but he wrote of them in his Spiritual Exercises, a compilation of reflections, examinations of conscience, and prayers. Keep reading...

This year our church celebrates 150 continuous years as a congregation of the Methodist Church! The date for our First Methodist Grapevine 150th Anniversary Celebration will be October 9, 2016. We hope you will mark your calendars and plan to celebrate with us in a special service and participate in other fun activities. We will worship together in ONE worship service, followed by a catered lunch. From time to time we will be updating you on plans for that special day and other events surrounding this milestone in our church and community, so watch this section of E-News for updates.

150 Years of Great Cooking!
The first item on our agenda is to collect recipes for our sesquicentennial cookbook! We will be collecting your favorite new and old recipes to publish this summer and have available for purchase by our October 9 celebration. We'll also include some old favorites from past church cookbooks and great recipes from our Be Our Guest team! We know we have the best cooks around, so be sure to submit your favorites to share! You may pick up blank recipe forms in the church office or download a printable form (PDF) by April 15. We have been told that some are having trouble with the online form, however the problem is intermittent (and so far unidentifiable), so you may wish to stick with the printable form.
Caught Caring...

Gifts Given
Gifts have been given to the Benevolence Fund in memory of John Harris by James L. Nichols, Leonard & Sharon Morrissey, and Yvonne Hoover.

A gift has been given to the Permanent Endowment Fund in memory of John Harris by Dick & Suzi Guckel.

Georjean Sherriff
Georjean was Caught Caring last week, leading kids through flash cards for the VAST after school program! If you'd like to know how you can be a part of VAST, contact Debbie Price (debbiep@fumcg.org).

Grant Isbell
Grant Isbell was Caught Caring when he collected over 630 items for Weekend Food at his 13th birthday party. This is the fourth year that Grant has collected items at his birthday in lieu of gifts. Grant finds his inspiration by our church's mission activities and in books he reads. Grant is quick to defer attention away from himself, to his friends and fellow soccer players who brought the food to his party. Grant is a perfect example that you are never too young to be Caught Caring.
