This week at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine | January 13, 2016
Sunday, January 17
Rev. John Mollet (English) | Rev. Armando Alvarado (Bilingual)

As we begin a new year and a renewed energy toward spiritual formation, our pastors would like to share some real-life "Holy Habits" that have helped transform their faith. For the first week of the series, our topic is "Meditation."

Discover the Church
If you are interested in church membership or learning more about the church, please consider joining us at the Discover the Church class this Sunday, January 17, at 10 AM in Room 2005 (Library). This is a one-time, one-hour class that is offered monthly for all who desire to know more about fellowship, mission and service opportunities in our church, and for all who are interested in or have questions about church membership.

Opportunities to Serve and Give...
We have an opportunity for someone who would like to volunteer in the church office on Tuesday mornings from 9 AM to noon. Duties include greeting visitors, answering phones, light filing, etc. Benefits include working with a fun, friendly staff and keeping up to date on church happenings! Ministry Safe Training is required. Contact Renee Tielkemeier at reneet@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x121 for more details.

We are happy to say that our SS Buddies ministry, is growing! We are in need of more volunteers to assist school age special abilities children during 9:45 AM Sunday School. Volunteers serve one Sunday a month, the same week each month. During this hour, you are there to be an extra pair of eyes for the parent, assist with tasks if needed (cutting, gluing, etc.) and just enjoy the time with the child. Our immediate need is for two people to be assigned the 2nd week of the month starting in February. If you would like to be a substitute only, there is also a place for you! If you would like to serve, please contact Joyce King at fumcdt@gmail.com. Read more about our Helping Hands ministries at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/helpinghands

We collected 148 items for God Can over the past two weeks. Thanks for your generous donations! GRACE is low on several standard stock items, including juice boxes, snacks, canned soup/stew, condensed milk, ramen noodles, canned fruit, condiments and toothpaste. Click here to view the full list (pdf). If you would like to donate any of these items, please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Serving From the Heart
Singular Journey Sunday School Class is hosting a 4-week study led by Bev Campisi beginning this Sunday, January 17, at 9:45 AM in FLC Room 2002. Serving From the Heart explores the Biblical foundation of our spiritual gifts. We will use a Spiritual Gifts Discovery tool to identify our spiritual gifts. In the following weeks, we will explore how our talents, resources, individuality, dreams and experiences connect with places of service. We hope you will join us!
The Upcoming Events list above includes information about events, groups and studies that are coming up soon. Be sure you visit the full Adult Ministries event calendar on our website for more information about on-going Bible Studies. bit.ly/adultmin-calendar

Make a new commitment to daily reading and prayer this year! Spend 15 minutes in prayer and 15 minutes reading scripture each day. Get a jumpstart with our daily devotionals, written by the pastors to correspond with the previous Sunday's sermon, on the 15 and 15 blog.

From the Spiritual Formation Blog: "Fasting"
by Fred Rigdon
Fasting is a faith practice that has been practiced for centuries to help us resist evil desires and give us confidence that our cravings do not control us. Although we think of fasting as forgoing all or some foods, for some time, even if for only one meal, the practice of fasting can teach us to resist temptations of all kinds. Thomas a Kempis, the fifteenth century author of The Imitation of Christ, the devotional classic which John Wesley called the best summary of the Christian life he had ever read, said: "Refrain from gluttony and thou shalt the more easily restrain all the inclinations of the flesh."

Caught Caring...

A gift has been given to the Benevolence Fund by Don Davis in memory of Christopher Crater.

by Georjean Sherriff

Every time I look up, Kim and Ed Crater are serving the Lord and FUMCG! Whether it's hosting a dinner for visiting guests... giving a custom-made altar to the church... laboring on the church Christmas float for Grapevine's parade... filling in for Guy Sellers (Facilities Manager) while he is out on sick leave... selling, organizing and salvaging shelves for the Thrift Shop... cooking and serving for Be Our Guest... collecting the offering on Christmas Eve... or working in the office! These are just a very, very few modest things that I have observed this God-sent couple doing. THE CRATERS ARE SERVING THE LORD AND THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF GRAPEVINE! How blessed we are!
