This week at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine | December 9, 2015
The Third Sunday of Advent, December 13
Rev. Jenn Pick speaking in the English services
Rev. Armando Alvarado speaking in Bilingual
In this season of Advent we will BEHOLD the presence of God as evidenced in the world... in prophets, in the lowly, in a new creation, in angelic light, and in the Christ Child. We encourage you, in this time of busy-ness, to open your eyes, search for God's light and BEHOLD God's glory... More about worship...

This Week...

Church Staff Announcement
The Staff Parish Relations Committee would like to announce that, after much discussion and prayerful consideration, we have recommended making a change in the position of the Director of Worship Arts/Music Ministry, Wren Robinson. The decision to make this change was not taken lightly and is done with a focus on moving the direction of our overall ministry and worship experience.

We have expressed to Wren our appreciation for the ten remarkable years that he and Jill have spent with us. We recognize the passion, talents, gifts, and blessings that they have shared in every aspect of our church's mission and ministry during their time with us.

After sharing our vision with Wren, we have agreed that he will begin the search for God's next role for his outstanding talents beginning January 1, 2016. We hope you'll take the next few weeks to thank Wren and Jill for all they have done to further God's word through their amazing gifts and talents during their time at First United Methodist Church of Grapevine.

On Sunday, December 27, we will hold a reception after our one worship service (which is at 11 AM) to say farewell to our friends as they look forward to their next opportunity to further God's Kingdom.

Should you have questions, please feel free to contact the Staff Parish Relations Committee through the church office (817-481-2559).

Christmas Staff Offering

The deadline to give toward this gift is Sunday, December 13.

Opportunities to Serve and Give...
Furnishing Hope (our new official mission ministry providing household items to our neighbors in need) has a critical request to gather items to replace those lost in a major fire at a duplex effecting two families. Priority items are beds, bedding, and kitchen ware. Clothing will also be needed, but we don't yet have sizes. Please go to Sign Up Genius to see the complete list and other details. The list will be updated periodically. We are also accepting Walmart gift cards to help replace essential items. Small donations can be brought to the portable building on Saturday, December 12, 9-11 AM and Sunday, December 13, 9 AM-12:30 PM. Large donations can be coordinated by contacting Diane Bishop. Contact Diane Bishop (817-239-5298, dianebishopdbd@gmail.com) if you want to assist the Furnishing Hope team in meeting this need - drivers with trucks, helpers to move large items or to help gather, organize and deliver smaller items.

Opportunities to Grow...

During the season of Advent, we have daily devotional readings and thoughts that have been written by our pastors, Family Ministries team and some of the children in our congregation. The devotionals are in both English and Spanish, and take the place of the 15 and 15 readings throughout the season. You can view the daily devotionals on the 15 and 15 blog, or pick up a printed copy in the foyer/atrium.

It seems that in any discussion of Spiritual Formation or Spiritual Transformation, the practice of Silence and Solitude is always emphasized.  However, the idea of Silence and Solitude can be intimidating.  It can seem lonely or boring, maybe even scary.  But it is really just about being quiet enough to hear God's voice. God is in us.  But we cannot hear God's internal whisperings because we are constantly tuned into external noise. Keep reading...

from John Erickson, Peace With Justice Task Force
In light of the recent tragic shootings in San Bernardino, California, the members of our recently formed Peace with Justice Task Force would like to share with you a letter from Adam Hamilton, Founding Pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. It is appropriate, as the first announcement of the birth of Jesus began with the words, "Do not be afraid." Click here to read Adam Hamilton's comments...
Leadership Meeting Reports

Jesus Calling Film Experience
by Cindy Ryan
The Jesus Calling film crew from Nashville spent two full days in Grapevine filming our church's story and how we have been impacted by Jesus Calling. Bev Campisi and I were honored to watch them work and to see the skillful way they pieced together how God has used Jesus Calling these last five years to bring us peace. Their goal is to show the impact the book can have on whole congregations. We are the first church whose story they have tried to capture in this way. As the filming progressed, we heard real life stories from our members about Jesus Calling as a practical, daily, faith tool and also as a way to share faith with others when we give the book away. Weekend Food
A few of our Weekend Food volunteers (Mechal Arnold, Gail Hoggett, Joe & Terri Wilkerson) were caught caring this week, bagging about 300 bags for Weekend Food. It is truly amazing that this (and another 500+ bags) happens EVERY SINGLE WEEK with some 25 volunteers involved in bagging and delivery. Our volunteers are such a blessing!

The United Methodist Women held their annual Christmas Party on Tuesday evening in Leach Hall. The Guild Circle provided floral decorations and the program featured "Fishers Of Men" who sang some familiar Christmas songs and installation of officers for 2016. Wesley Friendship Circle had a table of delectable treats for the membership and invited guests. The UMW Christmas project was supported by members who contributed Bibles, inspirational books, fluffy socks, hats, and gloves to battered women. Three UMW members were honored with pins of recognition honoring their service to our organization and the field of missions. They were: Kenda Diehm, Kathy Langham, and Brenda Doty.

Faith Builders & King Street
Faith Builders hosted 65 people at a Pot Luck dinner for our neighbors at King Street last Sunday. Children and youth left with a present purchased specifically for them. Another 30-35 presents will be delivered to those who didn't have a chance to attend. Curtis Jones shares, "One of the cool 'bonding' moments of the night came as we started some kitchen clean up at the end of the event. Before I knew it, almost all of our members and guests were working together to stack chairs and fold up tables. Most of the women were making sure everyone had a 'to go' box. While we've had other successful events with our King Street neighbors, this one felt different as we seemed to connect more easily and form relationships as we shared food, presents and laughed at our kids running around the gym together."
