This week at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine | November 25, 2015
The First Sunday of Advent, November 29
In this season of Advent we will BEHOLD the presence of God as evidenced in the world... in prophets, in the lowly, in a new creation, in angelic light, and in the Christ Child. We encourage you, in this time of busy-ness, to open your eyes, search for God's light and BEHOLD God's glory... More about worship...

Holiday Gift-Giving
Looking for more meaningful gifts for the holidays? Our Holiday Gift-Giving Catalog is now available! View the catalog online at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/gifts or pick up a printed copy in the Foyer or Atrium this Sunday!

The youth will be selling pecans for your holiday baking in the church office during the week and on Sunday, November 29.

Church members from the Latvian Methodist Church create handmade greeting cards, jewelry, bags, and artwork to help support their ministries and members. We have a variety of items available in the church office, and we will have them in the foyer and atrium on Sunday, November 29.

We will be providing Christmas bikes for the Methodist Children's Home again this year. This year's goal is to provide 77 bikes and helmets for the MCH Waco, Boys Ranch and Dallas locations. The cost for a bike and helmet is $95. We will assemble the bikes on Friday, December 11, and deliver on Saturday, December 12. To give to this effort, mark "Christmas Bikes" in the memo of your check or online gift....>

Our Angel Trees provide opportunities for you to help others through the GRACE Christmas Cottage. The Angel Trees will be up starting Sunday, November 29. Please pick an ornament and return your NEW, UNWRAPPED gifts to the Angel Tree or deliver them to the GRACE Christmas Cottage at 815 Main Street in Grapevine between November 30 - December 17. The Christmas Cottage will hold an Open House on Wednesday, December 2, at 5:30 PM....>

We collected 80 items last week. It's holiday time, so GRACE has a special list of needs for Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets. The holiday food drive includes needs like coffee, cooking oil, juice, pancake mix, evaporated milk, canned broth, canned fruit, flour, french onions, gravy, green beans, stuffing and much more! Click here to view the full list (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.
Opportunities to Grow...

During the season of Advent, we will have daily devotional readings and thoughts that have been written by our pastors, Family Ministries team and some of the children in our congregation. The devotionals will be in both English and Spanish, and will take the place of the 15 and 15 readings throughout the season. You can view the daily devotionals on the 15 and 15 blog, or pick up a printed copy in the foyer/atrium this Sunday.

The Seekers class will begin a new study for the season of Advent: "Sent: Delivering the Gift of Hope at Christmas" - a series by Pastor Jorge Acevedo and other young clergy who challenge us through story, art and Bible study.  GOD SENT CHRIST AT CHRISTMAS, AND CHRIST SENDS US. Join Seekers at 9:45 AM Sundays in Leach Hall.

Ruth Haley Barton's poem "Sabbath in Late Fall" reminds us that we must accept the Autumn and Winter in order to receive the Spring and Summer. This is true not just in the seasons of nature but in life as well. There must be death of old and letting go, in order to make room for the new and for rebirth. The leaf "that used to be so beautiful" must shrivel and drop to make room for the new bud. All of nature accepts this cycle, but we fight it. We pray desperately for the rebirth of Spring and light of Summer, without being willing to experience the letting go of Fall and the dormancy of Winter. We must let go and then we must wait. And then God will bring the Spring and the Light. Keep reading...

Caught Caring...

Middle School Youth
The beginning of middle school bible study last week was spent playing with the VAST kids and showing them all the coolness that is the HUB.

Grapevine Faith Christian School
Students from Grapevine's Faith Christian School completed 15 blankets for Jan's Blankets of Hope Ministry during their annual work-a-thon November 13th . Their work-a-thon each year is a fund raiser for their school whereby the kids request their parents and close friends to pledge donations to the school in exchange for their working 3 hours to support  a local ministry.  This is the second year for our Ministry and the school to work together for Jan's Blankets of Hope.

Jan's Blankets of Hope Ministry made a delivery to residents of Valley Hope Addiction Center on November 18. Team members also went back and made a special football blanket for one of the men at the center who especially wanted a football pattern. Pictured here are members of the FUMCG team with Valley Hope Addiction Center staff members.  Representing FUMCG are Betsy Milyo, Cheri Rutledge, Suzi Guckel, Terri Lane, Carole Lee, and Zona Peterson.

The children and tweens have been caught caring about their AIDS orphans over the last couple weeks. They were challenged at the beginning of November to donate $500 by January 10 for Lenah and Denis. We are tracking their progress with marshmallows and the mug of hot cocoa on the bulletin board. It can be found at the top of The Nest's hallway. For every $5 they bring a marshmallow gets added to the mug. If they reach their goal by January 10, they will enjoy a hot cocoa party on January 17 during class. As of last Sunday, November 22, they have raised $229 with one Tween boy contributing $75 from his own piggy bank. We have enjoyed watching their faces light up as they are helping others.

Gita Binane, Director of the Hope Center in Latvia
We received fantastic news from Latvia this week! Rev. Gita Mednis shares that Gita Binane (known as "Little Gita" by those who have traveled to Latvia) has been awarded the "Pride of Latvia" prize for her work and dedication as the Director of the Hope Center. She was nominated by the young mothers at the Center and the director of Social Services in one of the municipalities that Gita works with fairly regularly. She was one of 200 who were nominated.

An article appeared in the Latvian newspaper "Diena" with Gita's picture and a long interview with her. She is to meet the president who will congratulate her and she will be awarded the prize at a gala with the president, ministers and "cream of society" in attendance. A film crew spent the day at the Center and the video will be part of the presentation at the Gala. The whole evening will be televised on December 26. It is an annual event that many people will be watching. Gita and her good work, as well as the ministry of the Hope Center and Methodist Church, will be known to all of Latvia!
Click here to view the Latvian article - note that online translators do a very rough job with Latvian, but you will get the gist of it.
