Sunday, September 27 |
Worship at 8:30, 9:00, 9:45, 11:00 AM | Sunday School at 9:45 AM
"All in the Family"
This Sunday, September 27, we wrap up the sermon series, "All in the Family," with a message by Dr. Cindy Ryan on "Bedtime & Trust."
An Invitation from Dr. Cindy Ryan
I've never preached on bedtime before. I've never really focused too much on Jesus sleeping, but he did. This Sunday, we conclude our "All in the Family" series with "Bedtime & Trust." Please join me in worship as I share about the importance of bedtime in a day in the life of the Family of Faith. You will take home resources from our spiritual toolbox which will help you to focus on God at the end of the day. Lindsey Neil is singing a lullaby, "A Bedtime Prayer," at 9:45 and 11 AM. Chris Robinson is singing "Praise You in the Storm." Of course we will enjoy familiar hymns all morning long, our praise band at 9 AM and our Chancel Choir at 9:45 and 11 AM. We will be featuring the rich ministry of the United Methodist Women, plus they are having a bake sale! I'm really looking forward to all of it. Our Family of Faith worship experience isn't the same without all our family members here. Please join us this Sunday for worship and family.

The annual gala and auction is one of our biggest fundraisers for the missions of the church. Get your tickets for the CAREibbean Cruise Gala & Auction now! Tickets are available online, in the church office, and Sunday mornings. Tickets are $45 per person until September 30. After that, they are $50 per person. Get tickets early and save!
Do you have Vintage Style? Do you have clothing or wearable accessories from the 70's, 60's, 50's or earlier that you no longer want? Donate them to our church and VintageTex Vintage Clothing on Main Street in Grapevine will donate 50% of the actual sales price to the gala! Clean out your closets and bring your good condition retro items to the church office. For ideas of what they accept, check out their website at www.VintageTex.com.
Want to Help with the Gala? Volunteering is Easy! Volunteers are needed the week of the Gala in the Church Office as well as for Setup, Table Monitors & Clean Up at Austin Ranch on the day of the Gala. Visit our Sign-Up Genius page to sign up.
iFratelli and Spring Creek BBQ Support the Gala! Our next iFratelli DoughNation day is Monday, October 5. On that day, eat at any of the iFratelli locations, mention FUMC Grapevine, and they will give 15% back to support our CAREibbean Cruise Gala! This applies to dine-in, carry-out and delivery! Also, mark October 19 on your calendar... we'll have a similar benefit at Spring Creek BBQ in Grapevine from 5 to 9 PM. We'll need 150 people to attend in support of our church in order for us to get 20% of the sales (if fewer than 150 attend, we get 10%). To-go orders count too!
The Pumpkins are Coming!
The youth are hosting a Pumpkin Patch fundraiser again this year! The patch will be open October 1-31, and we need your help to make it successful. Here's how you can help:
- Unload. The pumpkins will be delivered to the Ball Street parking lot this Sunday, September 27, at 1 PM. We will need hands to help unload. All are welcome to come join the fun!
- Volunteer. Visit the Sign-Up Genius page for dates and times.
- Pallets. We need pallets for the pumpkins to sit on when they are delivered on September 27. If you have some to donate, contact Guy Sellers (guys@fumcg.org) or have them delivered to the church parking lot near the apartments.
- Book a story time. We are offering children's story time for children's groups, mom's groups, play groups, etc. Contact Katherine Hunter (katherineh@fumcg.org) to schedule a time.
Get more details at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/pumpkins.
Health Fair and Blood Drive
Mark October 15 on your calendar! In addition to our regular quarterly Blood Drive, on Thursday, October 15, we will hold a small health fair which will include screenings and information from Baylor Scott & White Hospital. In addition, we'll hold a Bone Marrow Registry Drive on behalf of Be the Match. Thousands of patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, sickle cell anemia or other life-threatening diseases depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match to save their life. A simple cheek swab and sharing your contact information is all it takes to get registered. Watch for the online Blood Drive sign-up coming soon!

Building Relationships in Latvia
During our last visit to Latvia, we talked about how we can grow our connections to the people in our covenant congregation at Riga First Church. Here are some ways you can connect:
- Connect with an individual. If you would like to connect with a member of Riga First on a personal level, please contact Melissia Mason at melissiam@fumcg.org and we can work to match you with someone in their congregation.
- Connect your class or study group. We are interested in connecting Bible Study groups that would like to either study the same lessons as the group in Latvia or develop relationships through email or Skype. Let Melissia know if you are interested in doing this.
- Go to Latvia! The tentative dates for next year's trip are June 24-July 4. We would be helping with renovations in the basement of Riga First Church and participating in the annual Friends of Latvia gathering (it was held at our church this year, and will be in Latvia next year). We need to begin gathering an estimate of how many people will be attending for planning purposes... please let Melissia know if you are considering it.
Support Our Military
Start collecting now for our next delivery of care packages for our troops! We will be collecting items on November 1 and 8, but you can start gathering your donations now. Because this delivery will come right around the holidays, we will also be including Christmas cards. Visit our website for a full list of items we will be collecting in November.
God Can Needs
We collected 155 items for the GRACE Food Pantry last week! Don't forget to pick up a few extra items when you do your grocery shopping! The GRACE Food Pantry has recently updated their needs list. They are currently low on or out of the following items: juice boxes, snacks, canned soup, condensed milk, ramen noodles, canned fruit, dry beans, evaporated milk, vienna sausages, toothpaste, diapers (size 4,5,6), toilet paper, tissues, hygiene items. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Longing For God
by Nancy Johnson
I often find myself longing for God which may result from my wandering away from my prayer time or reading of scripture but also because when I am "in the zone" with God I find I actually want even more. Yearning for God is also how we can grow spiritually. It's comforting to me to remember that my desire for God did not start because of something I did but it started because of God's desire for me and for us all. We love because God first loved us (1 John 4:19) and Christ died for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). It is key to our lives to cultivate a longing for God and to desire His goodness and wisdom but most of all Him! Keep reading...

Caught Caring
Donors for the Mariachi Youth Christian Praise Band... There are 20 students from the Bilingual Worship Service who have been practicing over 4 weeks. They are so excited and so are the parents! Most of the youth come from low income families and they are so blessed to have received donations from the church by receiving actual instruments or funding to buy the instruments needed for this ministry! Thank you! Gracias! Be on the lookout for them at "Las Posadas."
Kristine Hall shares about Lezley Milner... I wanted to give a shout out to Lezley Milner, who went above and beyond for Weekend Food recently. She came in on a Tuesday morning to bag for two schools and noticed that we were completely out of oatmeal. She also saw that several of the schools had been bagged without the oatmeal. After we got more oatmeal, Lezley came back and not only packed the 100+ bags she'd signed up for, she also added the missing oatmeal to the 100+ bags without the item. Lezley and her husband also provide all the plastic bags for Weekend Food each week and are truly a blessing to the ministry.
Patty Bandy shares about YOU ALL... Grace, myself and the entire Bandy family would like to say thank you to First Methodist Grapevine and the many people here who sent cards, letters, prayers, flowers, and made donations to the endowment of our church and Trinity United Methodist in Amarillo in memory of my Ganny (who raised me). It was so comforting to know that so many people were thinking of us during this great loss in our life and to know that we have a second family here. Thank you for your generosity and caring spirit. I could not imagine working for a more wonderful church. You are a blessing. - Much love, Patty Bandy
Gifts Given
A gift has been given to the Endowment Fund in honor of Kim & Ed Crater's wedding anniversary by Jay & Betty Rieder.
