Website Usability Survey
This summer, we are going through a clean-up and evaluation of content on our website. We'd like to get your feedback as we go through this process. Please take a moment to take our website usability survey. We appreciate your willingness to share your thoughts! You can look forward to the launch of our "refreshed" website in late August.
Donate Your Musical Instruments We are starting a Mariachi Christian Youth Praise Band! There are 14 youth who have signed up and are eager to learn, but we need instruments! Old or used are just as good as new, so if you have one of the following instruments gathering dust, please consider donating! We need 5 violins, 3 trumpets, 2 guitars, 1 vihuela and 2 guitarrons (Mexican Bass guitars). Lessons will begin at the end of August. The new group will perform at "Las Posadas" in December with other Mariachi players. We are excited and so are the youth! If you have an instrument to donate or have questions, please contact Rev. UPDATE: Connect GCISD Back to School Fair This Saturday, August 8
by Dr. Cindy Ryan
Once again, I have been touched by our congregation's generosity. You have donated money, over 300 new backpacks, your time (we now have a total of over 120 volunteers pre-registered to work the fair, this includes GCISD volunteers as well as those from the community and our church).
Several of you keep asking what we need. Carolyn Ann Walgren, church member and co-founder of Connect, has had a death in her family and will not be able to attend the fair or the Friday set up day. Those of you who know Carolyn Ann, know how hard she works and how irreplaceable she is. We are working to make sure we cover all the bases. So, the things we need help with are:
- Friday afternoon from 12-5 PM: We need able-bodied youth or others to help with set-up at Grapevine High School. High School or college-age boys are especially helpful. Community service hours are available. Email me cindyr@fumcg.org if you can help with this.
- Saturday 8:15 AM-noon: volunteers to serve as escorts for the 1600 plus students pre-registered for the fair (sign up on Sign-Up Genius)
- Backpacks: As a community we have collected over 1200 but we are still accepting backpacks through Friday morning at the church office. We could still use all types (elementary, string backpacks, etc.) but greatest need now is for full size, high school backpacks.
Neighbor Need
A neighbor has had to step up to care for a one year old baby girl, and is in immediate need of everything! Can you help by donating any of the following items? A Crib? Linens? Blankets? Clothing? Diapers? If so, please contact Diane Bishop at dianebishopdbd@gmail.com.
Jan's Blankets of Hope Work Session
Following our early July delivery of blankets to Valley Hope, we're now working toward our next delivery of blankets in the fall to Valley Hope, a substance abuse treatment facility located in Grapevine. Accordingly, our next work session will be held Thursday, August 20, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, in Leach Hall. A donation of fleece for our ministry will be appreciated. However, fleece will be available during our work session to make into handmade blankets bathed in prayer. If you have sharp fabric scissors, please bring them. Otherwise, we will provide those too. All we'll need are your willing hands and hearts as we cut and tie fringe to finish our Blankets of Hope. You'll find detailed information about our ministry here on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/blankets.
VAST - Valuable After School Time - is coming to FUMC Grapevine!
FUMC Grapevine is partnering with the Grapevine Police Department to open a second campus for their successful after school program, VAST. VAST will serve up to 50 children, grades 1-6, and will target Cannon & Silver Lake Elementary Schools and Grapevine Middle School. VAST starts August 31, and will run Monday-Thursday, 3:00-6:00 PM, following the GCISD calendar. We are still accepting volunteers; click here to fill out the application. Counselor training will be held on August 15, 9:00-11:00 AM in the Family Life Center. We also have a list of needs to help us get off the ground. If you would like to donate any of the following, please leave them in the VAST receptacle outside the church office: Crayons (15 ct), colored pencils (12 ct), washable markers, children's scissors, erasers, rulers. Questions? Contact Debbie Price (debbiep@fumcg.org) or Colby Mowery (cmowery@grapevinetexas.gov).
God Can Needs
We delivered 402 items to the GRACE Pantry last week! Don't forget to pick up a few extra items when you do your grocery shopping! Although the GRACE Food Pantry doesn't update their needs list every week, they do let us know when things have substantially changed. So... note that they still have need for cooking oil, tuna, evaporated milk, canned soup/stew, spaghetti sauce, condensed milk, ramen noodles, children's cereal, syrup, condiments, vienna sausages, canned fruit and juice. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Adult Discipleship |
Rev. John Mollet has begun a new Bible Study on Mondays at 6:00 PM in Leach Hall. If you could only have one of the four Gospels, which would you choose? Together we'll discover the joys and challenges of each of the four Gospels. There is no need to RSVP; just bring your Bible! The class will meet each Monday in August.
Sunday School Classes Go Retro
Two of our adult Sunday School classes are "going retro" in the next few Sundays, using classic TV to delve into biblical principles. This Sunday, Seekers continues a series based on "I Love Lucy" and Connections continues "Gilligan's Island."
- Seekers and "I Love Lucy": Each week the class will view a portion of the program and then follow up with discussion. Surprisingly, there are Biblical lessons to be learned in each episode. Seekers meets at 9:45 AM in Leach Hall.
- Connections and "Gilligan": The Connections Class, for those who are 50+ singles or single at church, is doing a study of "Gilligan's Island and the Seven Deadly Sins." Join us on our very own "3-hour tour" (actually it's 8 one-hour sessions). Connections meets at 9:45 AM in the Conference Room of the Senior Activity Center.
Sisters in Faith Serving Event
Sisters in Faith will hold their next event at the Connect Back-to-School Fair on August 8. Connect is in need of escorts for the fair. Escorts serve by walking families through the fair and helping them get what they need. The fair is at Grapevine High School from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. Sisters in Faith will meet at the Starbucks in front of Grapevine High School at 8:00 AM for fellowship and prayer before we go to work! Please let Nicole Wilson (nicole.wilson22@verizon.net) know if you are planning to come, and be sure to sign up on the Connect Sign-Up Genius page. Mark "Sisters in Faith, FUMC Grapevine" in the comments section of your sign-up.

Fall Bible Studies and Spiritual Formation Groups
We have a great variety of groups and studies gearing up for the fall. Please visit our website for more information about these upcoming groups (listed in order by the date they begin):
|
God Designed Us to Hear His Voice
by Nancy Johnson
God has designed us to hear His voice. In a sense, we have a built-in receiver that enables us to get guidance from God. Scripture tells us, "God does speak - sometimes one way and sometimes another - even though people may not understand it." (Job 33:14NCV). I can certainly relate to this verse and many of us may feel we are not understanding either. In her blog, The Plumb Line, Jennifer LeClaire recounted she heard God's voice as soon as she was saved which she desperately needed to hear because she got saved while she was in a county jail after being falsely accused of crime she did not commit. Hispanic Ministries Institute Equipping People for Diverse Ministries
FUMC Grapevine is starting a new venture this fall called the Hispanic Ministries Institute. This program invites church leaders from all over the area to come learn more about the spiritual disciplines of prayer, worship and study in the Wesleyan tradition, evangelizing the mission field, preaching, teaching, discipleship, mentoring and much more. HMI will focus primarily on how leaders can be developed in ministries that will attract diverse peoples to the message of the church. The HMI will use leadership training, outreach ministries and an annual Hispanic Ministry Conference to achieve these goals. Read more about HMI on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/hmi.
The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. - Ephesians 4:11-14 (NRSV)
|
Leadership Training
Our first Leadership Training of the Hispanic Ministries Institute is coming up Saturday, August 29, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Rooms 2007,2008, 2010). This training prepares and empowers you to do God's work. It will equip you to gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities to lead different ministries, including small faith groups. Our vision is to work together as God's instruments bringing hope to people in the name of Jesus Christ. Experience and Share God's Love today and tomorrow. To sign up, contact Rev. Armando Alvarado ( armandoa@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x122).
