DID YOU KNOW?
"Did You Know" is a series of feature articles that highlight various aspects of ministry in the church. Be on the lookout for the "Did You Know" inserts in Sunday's bulletin each week. If you miss Sunday, the articles are linked on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/didyouknow.
Our New Associate Pastor... Rev. Jenn Pick
Did you know that last Sunday was our new Associate Pastor's first Sunday? Rev. Jenn Pick and her family have most recently been at FUMC Mansfield, where Jenn was the Path1 Resident for New Church Starts. She will take over Compassion and Caring Ministries, as well as being a part of the Sunday morning worship team. Did you know that in addition to being an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, Jenn is also a loving wife and mother? Her husband, Todd, works in the Central Texas Conference office as Director of Evangelism, and they have an 11-month-old son, Drew. Keep reading...

Church News
Permanent Endowment Fund Reaches Milestone
by Pastor Melburn Sibley Last Sunday we had a wonderful service of worship which also celebrated the birth of our beloved America. During the service, we were given another reason to celebrate. The Permanent Endowment Fund reached their initial $1 million goal! First United Methodist Church has a Permanent Endowment Fund which can give us a boost in meeting facility needs. Occasionally an unexpected and unbudgeted need comes our way. The Permanent Endowment Fund is a resource to help in meeting such needs. When the Fund was established, a goal of $1,000,000 was established before we could make significant draws on the earning of the account. Last week a major gift was given which gets us to that initial goal. Just imagine! Year after year after year the income from this fund will be available to meet building and grounds needs. What an investment in God's work. Gifts large and small will bless forever. Memorial gifts will likely be added with regularity. Additional gifts are needed and are always welcome. Please mark your envelope or check Endowment Fund. This accomplishment must certainly please God and it gives us reason to celebrate. We take pleasure in giving back to God as He blesses us. You can read more about the Permanent Endowment Fund at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/endowment. |

Mission Ministries

Feed Our Kids Big Week - NEEDS
Feed Our Kids BIG Week has been a huge success. We're serving more kids every day and deepening our relationships within the Ministry Mile. Because of the increased numbers each day, we are in need of more individually wrapped packages of chips to take out to the sites. We need these delivered to the church by 10 AM tomorrow (Thursday). Volunteers are always welcome whether preparing lunches, going out to the sites or both. We will be in the Family Life Center today through Friday at 10:30 AM prepping lunches, and we'll head out to sites at 11:30 AM. See below for pics! Questions? Contact Deb Scheiwe (debscheiwe@verizon.net).
Feed Our Kids - Shady Oaks
When Feed Our Kids Big Week is over, we continue to feed our friends over at the Shady Oaks site for FOUR more weeks - July 13 through August 7. Leaders from Shady Oaks prepare the lunches every day and serve them to their community. Our church provides the kitchen to prepare the food, youth to come and play each day and special events like crafts and games. We also have opportunities for groups to come out and grill and join in the fun. This year we are looking for youth to come to the site each day to play and get to know their neighbors. We also need volunteers who would like to do a special craft one day (or more), bring a fun game, do face painting or anything else you might come up with that would be engaging for kids! Sign up to help on the Check-In insert in the Sunday bulletin or contact Debbie Price at debbiep@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x108.
Blood Drive on July 23
Our next Blood Drive is coming on Thursday, July 23, 4:00 to 7:00 P.M in Room 2001, and we need your donations. You may make your appointment online now or contact Cheri Rutledge at cherir@fumcg.org. Appointments are made in twenty minute increments beginning at 4:00 PM. Questions? Call the church office at 817-481-2559 or contact Cheri.
Update: Connect GCISD Back to School Fair
Great news! Connect has received some generous donations to provide all the school supplies for the children registered for the Connect-GCISD Back to School Fair! Our greatest need right now is for new backpacks. Please bring your backpack donations to the receptacles located by the church office and in the chapel and sanctuary foyers. We also still need volunteers for the day of the fair, Saturday August 8, 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon at Grapevine High School. If you would like to volunteer to help out at the Fair, we now have the volunteer sign-up form active on SignUp Genius. Click here to sign up. Questions? Contact Cindy Ryan (cindyr@fumcg.org) or Carolyn Ann Walgren cwalgren@verizon.net.
School Supplies for Shoeboxes
It's Christmas in July! This is a great time to be collecting school supplies, toys, hygiene items, etc., and planning packing parties for Operation Christmas Child. OCC brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations worldwide through simple, gift-filled shoe boxes and evangelistic materials that tell the Good News of God's love. If you'd like to donate items, please leave them in the box outside the church office through the month of July. We'll also need volunteers to help with our efforts as we get closer to collection time in the fall. If you're interested in helping, contact Neil Anderson (817-430-1678 or stealthna@charter.net). Visit www.samaritanspurse.org/OCC for more information on what items to donate and details about how to pack a box.
God Can Needs
Don't forget to pick up a few extra items when you do your grocery shopping! Although the GRACE Food Pantry doesn't update their needs list every week, they do let us know when things have substantially changed. So... note that they still have need for cooking oil, tuna, evaporated milk, canned soup/stew, spaghetti sauce, condensed milk, ramen noodles, children's cereal, syrup, condiments, vienna sausages, canned fruit and juice. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.
Project Read Book Drive
Project Read is still taking your book donations to help fill our needs for Feed Our Kids summer distributions. Bring your donations of new or gently used books, especially for young readers and for Spanish speakers, to the donation boxes in the foyers of Founders Chapel and the Sanctuary as well as outside the church office through August 21. We can also use monetary donations to purchase books. Note "Project Read" on your check or envelope if you wish to do so.

Introducing.... VAST
|
VAST - Valuable After School Time - is coming to FUMC Grapevine!
FUMC Grapevine is partnering with the Grapevine Police Department to open a second campus for their successful after school program, VAST. VAST will serve up to 50 children, grades 1-6, and will target Cannon & Silver Lake Elementary Schools and Grapevine Middle School. VAST starts August 31 and will run Monday-Thursday, 3:00-6:00 PM, following the GCISD calendar.
VAST will offer the following to children in our area: - Structure
- Tutoring
- Cultural Exposure
- Long-Term Mentors
- Healthy Snack & Dinner
- Access to Technology
- Spiritual Support
How Can You Help? VAST needs nine volunteers (counselors) each day. A volunteer must be 16 years or older and is encouraged to come one day a week. A VAST Counselor helps with homework tutoring, reading development and fosters long-term relationships with the kids. There are two field trips a month, exciting speakers and varied learning experiences. This is a wonderful and exciting opportunity to share your gifts and talents with children in a unique environment where the goal is to foster the love of learning in a safe and healthy environment. We hope you will prayerfully consider being part of the team. Questions? Contact Debbie Price (debbiep@fumcg.org) or Colby Mowery (cmowery@grapevinetexas.gov).

Young Adults
New College Class on Sunday Mornings!
Do you want to attend a class that is refreshing, creative, and insightful? A class that offers a new approach to looking at the Bible and being encouraged to see how God is working in our lives? In the midst of thinking about all we do, we may be asking ourselves, "Where do we belong?" Perhaps it is time to move beyond the old way of thinking and search for where God is leading us today. We invite all college age young adults to join us as we seek real solutions, peace and justice in our world. We'll start with a discussion of possible topics and themes on Sunday, July 26, at 9:45 AM in the Arts & Crafts Room of the Senior Activities Center. Questions? Don't Waste Time. Pray!
by Norman Vincent Peale
Have you ever sat fuming in a doctor's waiting room long past your appointment time? Or looked in vain for a tardy friend in a restaurant? Or paced the floor in an airport waiting for a flight, hours overdue? On such occasions, I'm sure one exasperated phrase keeps running through your mind: "What a waste of time!" But what if I told you that we never have to waste time like that again? I had a friend named Frank Laubach, one of the saintliest men I ever met. Frank was a missionary who became famous for his success in teaching illiterate people to read. But he also was a man who took literally the line in the Bible that says "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17), and accomplished this by using what he called "fractional prayers." You will notice throughout the summer that all of our themes are being replaced with new signs indicating "The Great Reveal: Coming Fall 2015." Creating and reinventing a ministry means hanging on to who we are while moving forward to become who God is calling us to be. Gifts Given
Gifts have been given to the Permanent Endowment Fund in memory of Chuck Compton by: The Riddle Family, Janice & Randy Rice, and Janalyn Patterson.
July 5th Bash!
The Fellowship Committee would like to thank all of you who came out and participated in our All-American Lunch this past Sunday. More than 200 people gathered together to enjoy hot dogs, watermelon, cupcakes and cookies while being entertained by the children singing songs they had learned in VBS. Bicycles, tricycles and scooters were decorated and paraded around the sanctuary for a crowd of flag-waving fans. These events would not be possible without the help of so many people. From the setup and decoration of the FLC on Thursday morning to the cleanup Sunday afternoon, more than 20 volunteers were involved in this effort. Thank you to all who volunteered to help and to those on Sunday who just saw something that needed to be done and jumped right in. A big thank you to the Facilities staff for all their help before, during and after the event. If you weren't able to attend this time, we hope you'll make our next Fellowship event. Stay tuned for more details.
Seamstresses Caught Caring
You may have noticed the red, white and blue stoles that the choir was wearing this past Sunday. Three seamstresses in our church - Shari Stanfield, Debbie Weems and Rita Yoes - were CAUGHT CARING by creating these stoles for this special Sunday performance. Thanks, ladies, for your hard work!

Caught Caring for Our Kids
YOU have been caught caring for our kids this week! We have already served a total of 1,300 kids on the first two days! Many thanks to everyone who has helped make Feed Our Kids BIG Week possible, including our volunteers, those who donated items, and those who have kept this ministry in their prayers! Check out our Facebook page for more photos. Remember that we still need donations of individually wrapped chips delivered to the church by 10 AM tomorrow (Thursday).

CAUGHT CARING
|
As we continue to keep our focus on "Our One Word" for 2015 - CARING - we'd like to encourage you to keep your eyes open for people "caught caring." If you catch someone caring, send us a story! It can be just a few words, a picture, etc. Send your "caught caring" stories and photos to Melissia at melissiam@fumcg.org.
