DID YOU KNOW?
"Did You Know" is a series of feature articles that highlight various aspects of ministry in the church. Be on the lookout for the "Did You Know" inserts in Sunday's bulletin each week. If you miss Sunday, the articles are linked on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/didyouknow.
Central Texas Annual Conference Did you know that earlier this month, elected delegates of FUMC Grapevine represented us at the Central Texas Annual Conference? Representatives from over 300 churches in the Central Texas Conference came together to hear reports of God's work and review and approve future work. During the conference, we heard stories of caring, worshipped together, and commissioned new leaders to do the work of the church.
Did you know that the mission of our Conference is, "Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world"? Annual Conference serves to awaken us to the need for an aggressive approach to our universal mission. We are reminded that we are called to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and go outside our doors into our communities and the world.
At this year's Annual Conference, we heard reports of how God has been working through the Methodist Church. Here are some highlights... keep reading...

An Update on the Connect GCISD Back to School Fair!
By Dr. Cindy Ryan
Good news! We are closing the gap and now only need donations for school supply packs for 280 children! If you, or an organization you are a part of, would like to provide any of these remaining school supply packs, go to www.educationalproducts.com/shoppacks - enter school code GCE000 - or you can donate to Connect at the GCISD Education Foundation, PO Box 292, Grapevine TX 76099. All funds will go directly to school supply packs. Just be sure and mark "Connect" clearly on your check.
Our other current need is to have new backpacks for all the children who will attend the fair. So, we are asking you, our church members, to donate new backpacks of all sizes between now and August 2. We will have clearly marked donation boxes in the atrium outside Founders Chapel, by the church office and in the sanctuary foyer. Thank you in advance for all you do to help support the children in need in our community!
If you would like to volunteer to help out at the Fair, we now have the volunteer sign-up form active on SignUp Genius. Click here to sign up.

Costa Rica Village Luncheon
The Costa Rica Village team would like to invite you to a luncheon, where we'll transport you to the tropical rain forest, the Village of Las Juntas, and the Methodist Orphanage in Coronado. Experience the taste of tropical food, the love of the people, and hear about God's blessings from our recent trips! Team members from our youth trip in March and adult trip in May will be sharing stories of faith in action. Our youth will share how making a difference in the lives of people in Costa Rica can also transform your heart. Our adults will share what they have learned about "being the church," beyond just going to worship on Sundays. Join us on Sunday, June 28, at 12:15 PM in Leach Hall for a taste of "Pura Vida" - "pure life" in Costa Rica! We ask that you RSVP on the Check-In insert in Sunday's bulletin so that we have plenty of food. Questions? Contact Armando Alvarado (armandoa@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x122).
Latvia Meeting & Ice Cream Social The next meeting of the Latvia Village will be Tuesday, June 30, at 6:00 PM in Room 2007. We will be discussing our next steps for our partnerships in Latvia. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Latvia Village is welcome to attend. Following our business meeting, we'll be joining together with Texas Friends of Latvia participants from other churches to have an ice cream social send-off for those who are going on trips to Latvia this summer. There is a large team going to Latvia in July from Smithfield UMC, and a small group from FUMC Grapevine heading to Latvia in August to attend Annual Conference. Questions? Contact Melissia Mason (melissiam@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x109). Feed Our Kids - Shady Oaks Did you know that when Feed Our Kids Big Week is over, we continue to feed our friends over at the Shady Oaks site for FOUR more weeks? This began as an opportunity to grow our relationship with Grapevine Village and has evolved into so much more.
For four weeks - July 13-17, 20-24, 27-31 and August 3-7 - leaders from Shady Oaks prepare the lunches every day and serve them to their community. Our church provides the kitchen to prepare the food, youth to come and play each day and special events like crafts and games. We also have opportunities for groups to come out and grill and join in the fun. This year we are looking for youth to come to the site each day to play and get to know their neighbors. We also need volunteers who would like to do a special craft one day (or more), bring a fun game, do face painting or anything else you might come up with that would be engaging for kids!
Sign up to help on the Check-In insert in the Sunday bulletin or contact Debbie Price at debbiep@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x108.

  Volunteer Connection
I'm Dreaming of a New Volunteer Team
We speak a lot in staff meetings and in Council on Ministries meetings about how many wonderful ways you, our church members, are always willing to serve. We catch you caring all the time! I was walking up the church sidewalk the other day and caught one of our members outside Founders Chapel pulling little sucker branches off of a tree. I thanked her, asked if she was on the Gardening on the Grounds team taking care of that bed, and she said no, but she thinks God has a good sense of humor. She told me this story: She said each Sunday when she'd come to church the last few weeks, she'd look at that tree and think it was looking a little bushy. The next week she'd think the same thing when she came to church... that someone should prune it a bit. But that last Sunday, when she thought the same thought, she laughed and realized maybe it was her who could and should take off those tiny branches that were bugging her. So she did! Please note: This isn't to say we can just come up and cut trees down, but it did remind me of how many ways - small and large -our volunteers can and do help support our staff.
Have YOU had a thought, idea, even a gripe or complaint, that you could use in a constructive way to help our church buildings and facilities? I'm guessing you do! Our buildings and grounds are really showing their age. We use every bit of our facilities throughout the week, and summertime is no exception. We are such a CARING church, we just never take a break in building use for meetings, ministries, Bible Studies and small groups.
Do you have that great gift of attention to detail where you notice things and wonder why someone doesn't do ______ (fill in the blank)? Would it make you happy to get together with others who might share a desire to form a team who could talk about what lay people could do on their own to keep our campus looking good through the week? Occasionally we've dusted all the woodwork throughout. Our kitchens get heavy usage and could be cleaned each week. Our white tables and chairs get crayon and other stuff on them and could be sprayed and wiped. Just like the housekeeping in our own homes the possibilities are endless! So I'm just dreaming, but am wondering if anyone else might be sharing a similar dream. Let me know if that is you! beverlyc@fumcg.org

July 5 Worship and Fellowship
Next Sunday, July 5, we will gather together for ONE WORSHIP SERVICE at 9:45 AM in the Sanctuary, followed by lunch at 11:00 AM in the Family Life Center. Worship Arts is preparing a powerful and inspiring musical celebration for the day called "With Freedom's Holy Light." The Fellowship Committee is hosting an All-American Hot Dog Lunch immediately following worship. Kids can bring their bicycles, tricycles, scooters, etc., to decorate for a parade around our parking lot. The Children's Ministry will have a craft for all the kids to make and take home. Our VBS kids will also perform some of the songs they learn during VBS week. All food will be provided by the church, although donations are always welcome to help offset the cost. No reservations are required, so invite your friends to join us for a wonderful morning of worship followed by good, old-fashioned fellowship! Want to help? We'll need set-up helpers, hot dog grillers, servers, kitchen helpers and more! Sign up on the Check-In insert in Sunday's bulletin or contact Kim Crater (eclaysman@aol.com or 972-523-0354) if you would like to help.

Seekers Summer Programs
During the summer months, the Seekers Sunday School class will have a series of special programs. This Sunday, June 28, Seekers wraps up their discussion on the movie, "God's Not Dead." All are welcome to join us in Leach Hall at 9:45 AM. Read more about Seekers and their upcoming studies at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/seekers.
"Just Us" Becomes "GIFT"
The Just Us Sunday School Class has recently decided to change their name to the GIFT Class, which stands for "Growing In Faith Together." Originally, the class was made up of young couples with no children, so "Just Us" seemed fitting. However, recently many have begun to have children and the class has shifted their focus to be more inclusive. The class consists of couples (dating, engaged, or married) in their 20's-30's (some with young children and some without). GIFT will continue to enjoy fellowship, service and growth opportunities through scripture and similar life experiences. Over the summer, GIFT will be joining with the Pathfinders class for a variety of studies. You are invited to join them on Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM in Room 2007 of the Family Life Center. Join GIFT on Facebook too!
Promises for Later in Life
"Is there any good news in the Good news for Older Adults?" This is the focus of Jane Marie Thibault's book: 10 Gospel Promises for Later Life. Dr. Thibault is a clinical gerontologist and professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Using that old hymn, "Standing on the Promises," she invites her readers to explore what that means for later life. Annette Sowell will be leading an orientation meeting for a class based on this book on Tuesday, June 30, at 10:00 AM in Room 2010 of the Family Life Center. Attendees will discuss a definite class schedule and be introduced to the book. To sign up for the orientation class or for more information, contact Annette Sowell (817-283-8512 or annette.sowell@sbcglobal.net).

Parable of the Four Soils
by Nancy White
Christ was always teaching and often many of His greatest lessons were taught by the use of parables. Jesus told the disciples it was granted for them to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God and He told the parable of the sower, the seed, and the soils (Luke 8, Matthew 13, Mark 4). Many of us are familiar with this parable and Jesus explained that the disciples may understand these parables but those on the outside would not understand, "...so that SEEING THEY MAY NOT SEE, AND HEARING THEY MAY NOT UNDERSTAND. (Luke 8:10 NAS). The truth of our Lord can look very different as seen from within and from without, much like looking at stained glass windows from the inside or the outside. Keep reading...

We're having a great week at VBS, with our focus centered around Acts 17:28: "In God we live, move and exist" (CEB). Lots of people have been "caught caring" as they guide the children throughout the day, lead music and crafts and recreation, prepare snacks and so much more! Check out the photos on our Children's Ministry Facebook albums (no log-in required).
