Father's Day Offering
This Sunday is Father's Day! Looking for a great gift for Dad? Why not help out a family in need? We are still having consistent needs for Benevolence Funds to help our neighborhood families who find themselves in financial difficulties. Celebrate your dad this Father's Day by giving a gift to the Benevolence Fund in his honor. If you would like an acknowledgment card to include in your Father's Day card, they are available in the church office and in the foyer/atrium.

DID YOU KNOW?
"Did You Know" is a series of feature articles that highlight various aspects of ministry in the church. Be on the lookout for the "Did You Know" inserts in Sunday's bulletin each week. If you miss Sunday, the articles are linked on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/didyouknow.

Feed Our Kids
Did you know Feed Our Kids began with a few Grapevine moms who wondered what kids who qualified for free/reduced cost lunches at school ate for lunch during the summer? Those moms made sack lunches, took them to a couple of apartment buildings and handed them out to the kids. That small step was the beginning of Feed Our Kids.

Did you know GRACE got involved 10 years ago to coordinate serving more kids in our community? Our church jumped in to help with two sites the first year. Adults, youth and kids gathered in the Family Life Center to pack brown bag lunches with a sandwich, a piece of fruit and cookies. We took the packed lunches to Ticknor Terrace, off of Mustang Ave near the GRACE food pantry, and Lakes of Williamsburg complex. We passed out the lunches, played ball and did crafts with the kids. New Need: Gas Cards

We are in need of $25 gas cards to give to families who are in need of emergency assistance. If you would like to donate cards, you may simply bring them by the church office.

Donations for Grapevine Family

A local family of three is in need of gently used or new furniture and household items. The Grapevine Housing Authority is setting this family up with a 3 bedroom, 1 bath home for move-in either this Saturday, June 20, or the following week, pending home repairs. If you are willing to purchase or donate items for this family, please visit our list of items at this link to sign up: www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4ba4ab2aa31-grapevine. We have limited storage space at the church, so we ask that furniture and large items be delivered to the home once the move-in date is confirmed. (Located just off NW Hwy and Main Street, address will be provided via email once move-in date is confirmed.) Additional delivery date(s) will be scheduled as needed. We are collecting small items (standard household supplies like paper towels, napkins, cleaning supplies, soap, etc.) in a box in the Family Life Center through Friday, June 26. Questions? Contact Melissa Shumaker (817-271-2502 or shumakerfamily@tx.rr.com) or Diane Bishop (817-239-5298 or DianeBishopDBD@gmail.com).

Project ReadProject Read Book Drive

Project Read is still taking your book donations to help fill our needs for Feed Our Kids summer distributions. Bring your donations of new or gently used books, especially for young readers and for Spanish speakers, to the donation boxes in the foyers of Founders Chapel and the Sanctuary as well as outside the church office through August 21. We can also use monetary donations to purchase books. Note "Project Read" on your check or envelope if you wish to do so.

God Can Needs

We collected 45 God Can items this week. The GRACE Food Pantry is currently OUT of cooking oil, tuna, evaporated milk, canned soup/stew, spaghetti sauce, condensed milk, ramen noodles, children's cereal and syrup. They are currently LOW on condiments, vienna sausages, canned fruit and juice. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Feed Our Kids Feed Our Kids Big Week

Feed Our Kids Big Week is July 6-10. You can still visit the Donation Station in the foyer this Sunday, June 21. Choose needs from the display boards and return your donations to Room 1006 of the Family Life Center by June 28. We can always use more volunteers, and you can sign up on the Check-In insert in Sunday's bulletin or contact Deb Scheiwe (debscheiwe@verizon.net).
Record Number of Economically Disadvantaged Students Have Registered for Connect GCISD Back to School Fair

By Dr. Cindy Ryan

On August 8, 2015 we will hold the 4th Annual Connect/GCISD Back to School Fair at Grapevine High School.  This fair serves those in GCISD who are classified as economically disadvantaged, which is roughly 1 in 4 of the students GCISD serves.  This year, we have a record number of students who are already pre-registered for the fair. Even since we last reported, the number has increased to 2,208! That's well over 1,000 more than we served last year.

The Women's Division of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce provides generous funds for school supplies for these children, as does Connect. However, this year's pre-registration is the highest ever and we are in need of individuals and community groups to help provide school supplies for all these extra children.

Our church has been a big part of the Back to School Fair in the past by providing gift cards, backpacks and school supply packs for the children as well as countless volunteers the day of the event.

If you, or an organization you are a part of, would like to help "stand in the gap" and provide school supply packs for GCISD children in need, you can go to www.educationalproducts.com/shoppacks - enter school code GCE000 - or you can donate to Connect at the GCISD Education Foundation, PO Box 292, Grapevine TX 76099 and all funds will go directly to school supply packs. Just be sure and mark "Connect" clearly on your check.

If you have questions or would like to volunteer at the fair contact me cindyr@fumcg.org or Carolyn Ann Walgren cwalgren@verizon.net. We will also have a sign up genius link when it gets closer to the fair date.

Costa Rica Village Luncheon

The Costa Rica Village team would like to invite you to a luncheon, where we'll transport you to the tropical rain forest, the Village of Las Juntas, and the Methodist Orphanage in Coronado. Experience the taste of tropical food, the love of the people, and hear about God's blessings from our recent trips! Team members from our youth trip in March and adult trip in May will be sharing stories of faith in action. Our youth will share how making a difference in the lives of people in Costa Rica can also transform your heart. Our adults will share what they have learned about "being the church," beyond just going to worship on Sundays. Join us on Sunday, June 28, at 12:15 PM in Leach Hall for a taste of "Pura Vida" - "pure life" in Costa Rica! We ask that you RSVP on the Check-In insert in Sunday's bulletin so that we have plenty of food. Questions? Contact Armando Alvarado (armandoa@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x122).

Latvia Update

The next meeting of the Latvia Village will be Tuesday, June 30, at 6:00 PM in Room 2007. We will be discussing our next steps for our partnerships in Latvia. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Latvia Village is welcome to attend. A small group will be heading to Latvia in August to attend Annual Conference. Questions? Contact Melissia Mason (melissiam@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x109).

Feed Our Kids - Shady Oaks
Did you know that when Feed Our Kids Big Week is over, we continue to feed our friends over at the Shady Oaks site for FOUR more weeks? This began as an opportunity to grow our relationship with Grapevine Village and has evolved into so much more.

For four weeks - July 13-17, 20-24, 27-31 and August 3-7 - leaders from Shady Oaks prepare the lunches every day and serve them to their community. Our church provides the kitchen to prepare the food, youth to come and play each day and special events like crafts and games. We also have opportunities for groups to come out and grill and join in the fun.

This year we are looking for youth to come to the site each day to play and get to know their neighbors. We also need volunteers who would like to do a special craft one day (or more), bring a fun game, do face painting or anything else you might come up with that would be engaging for kids!

Sign up to help on the Check-In insert in the Sunday bulletin or contact Debbie Price at debbiep@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x108.

Caring Individuals or Groups Needed to Provide Sunday Night Youth Supper

If you were part of a youth group, I know you remember the friends and the activities, and while you might not remember what you ate each Sunday night, you probably DO remember that there were some "older people" who showed up and served you something!

Pay it forward! Our Youth group meets for a meal Sunday evenings in the Family Life Center before breaking into their groups. It would be great for them to see new faces to bring in, cook for and serve them standing on the other side of that kitchen window! You can sign up for a specific day on our Sign Up Genius page. If you would like more information, you can check in with the meal coordinator, Marilyn Hall at marilyn_hall@verizon.net.

Beyond the meals, do you have a heart to share time with our young people? Michael Franklin will be very happy to talk with you about the vision he has for how FUMCG Youth will be growing! Contact him at michaelf@fumcg.org.
fellowship
July 5 Worship and Fellowship
Mark your calendar! On Sunday, July 5, we will gather together for ONE WORSHIP SERVICE at 9:45 AM in the Sanctuary, followed by lunch at 11:00 AM in the Family Life Center. Worship Arts is preparing a great patriotic musical celebration for the day. The Fellowship Committee is hosting an All-American Hot Dog Lunch immediately following worship. Kids can bring their bicycles, tricycles, scooters, etc., to decorate for a parade around our parking lot. The Children's Ministry will have a craft for all the kids to make and take home. Our VBS kids will also perform some of the songs they learn during VBS week. All food will be provided by the church, although donations are always welcome to help offset the cost. No reservations are required, so invite your friends to join us for a wonderful morning of worship followed by good, old-fashioned fellowship! Want to help? We'll need set-up helpers, hot dog grillers, servers, kitchen helpers and more! Sign up on the Check-In insert in Sunday's bulletin or contact Kim Crater (eclaysman@aol.com or 972-523-0354) if you would like to help.

Sunday School Class Meeting

Seekers Summer Programs
During the summer months, the Seekers Sunday School class will have a series of special programs. This Sunday, June 21, Seekers continues the four part video/discussion on the movie, "God's Not Dead." Paul Bielss will be our discussion leader after this session of the film. Please feel free to join us in Leach Hall at 9:45 AM. All are welcome even if you wish to come just for this series. Read more about Seekers and their upcoming studies at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/seekers.

"Just Us" Becomes "GIFT"
The Just Us Sunday School Class has recently decided to change their name to the GIFT Class, which stands for "Growing In Faith Together." Originally, the class was made up of young couples with no children, so "Just Us" seemed fitting. However, recently many have begun to have children and the class has shifted their focus to be more inclusive. The class consists of couples (dating, engaged, or married) in their 20's-30's (some with young children and some without). GIFT will continue to enjoy fellowship, service and growth opportunities through scripture and similar life experiences. Over the summer, GIFT will be joining with the Pathfinders class for a variety of studies. You are invited to join them on Sunday mornings at 9:45 AM in Room 2007 of the Family Life Center. Join GIFT on Facebook too!

Promises for Later in Life
"Is there any good news in the Good news for Older Adults?" This is the focus of Jane Marie Thibault's book: 10 Gospel Promises for Later Life. Dr. Thibault is a clinical gerontologist and professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Using that old hymn, "Standing on the Promises," she invites her readers to explore what that means for later life. Annette Sowell will be leading an orientation meeting for a class based on this book on Tuesday, June 30, at 10:00 AM in Room 2010 of the Family Life Center. Attendees will discuss a definite class schedule and be introduced to the book. To sign up for the orientation class or for more information, contact Annette Sowell (817-283-8512 or annette.sowell@sbcglobal.net).
Spiritual Formation
A Favorite Prayer Technique
by Fred Rigdon

tabernacle The most important work a Christian can do is prayer and we tend to think we should automatically know how to pray or that prayer should come naturally.  A group of us have been studying the book by Teresa A. Blythe, 50 Ways To Pray, which has been helpful and insightful.  One challenge experienced by many Christians during their time of prayer is quieting our own thoughts which may lead to distractions and I frequently utilize a breath prayer along with visual imagery to help my focus during my quiet times with God. At the beginning of my prayers I envision walking into the tabernacle... keep reading...

The Great Reveal
We are excited to announce the coming of new Family Ministry programming here at FUMC Grapevine! You will notice throughout the summer that all of our themes are being replaced with new signs indicating "The Great Reveal: Coming Fall 2015." Creating and reinventing a ministry means hanging on to who we are while moving forward to become who God is calling us to be. It will take some time to create a quality, Christ-centered, people-reaching ministry! Read more on our website or in the June Family Ministries newsletter (pdf).

Access-Life Expo Recap

by Joyce King

We enjoyed a nice sunny day out at the Haven's Horse Ranch in the Keller area while volunteering with the Access-Life Expo. There was a great turnout, even though we had to move the event away from the flooded lake in Grapevine.

I want to thank all the great volunteers from our church that came out on Saturday. We had a total of 21 volunteers and collected enough money to pay for all the ice and water that was much appreciated by all. Thank you again for the church support with unique ability events through the Helping Hands Ministry. If you would like to check out our ministry, please call Patty Bandy at 817-481-2559 or contact me by email: fumcdt@gmail.com. Check out more photos on our Facebook album.

One of the participant families sent the following note of thanks...

I wanted to thank you and all the volunteers for putting on such a wonderful Expo for children with disabilities. We attended the North Texas Expo. My 4-year-old son who has autism had an excellent time and loved every moment he spent there. He came home in a very happy mood after having a tough week. I am sure I speak on behalf of all families who have attended that we feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to take our children to this event. Even with the relocation, it was an amazingly well run Expo, well stocked and all the volunteers and vendors were incredibly gracious. We could not have asked for a better day. Wow.

High School Mission Trip Team... Caught Caring

by Michele Crater

Our high school youth have worked tirelessly this week in Lake Charles, Louisiana, for the CTCYM Mission Trip. We have ten work teams made up by youth and adults from FUMC Grapevine, Arlington Heights UMC and Saginaw UMC, and nine job sites needing new wheelchair ramps, roof work and home repair. We've also been treated to a visit from the Mayor of Lake Charles, who presented us with a key to the city, a worship service by a local praise band and a Mardi Gras-themed celebration last night with enough King Cake to last us the rest of the week! We've been plenty rained on, but our spirits are still high. Our youth are truly being the hands and feet of Christ in this community, and it's evident that our clients are impacting them as much as they are impacting their clients! We'll return Saturday after closing rally in Shreveport, Louisiana, with plenty of pictures and stories to share. Until then we're keeping everyone up to date on the Youth Facebook page and the Lake Charles Living Center CTCYM 2015 Facebook page.

Pathfinders... Caught Caring

The Pathfinders Class was "caught caring" last Sunday evening. They sorted and packaged donated toys from the Thrift Shop... a great time of fellowship and caring!

A Note of Gratitude to the Bereavement Team

The Compton Family wishes to thank our church members who hosted the reception after Chuck's memorial service. We were touched to see family, friends, neighbors, former students, fellow teachers, and textbook co-workers. This was a beautiful opportunity to share their memories of Chuck at the time he was a part of their lives.
