DID YOU KNOW?
"Did You Know" is a series of feature articles that highlight various aspects of ministry in the church. Be on the lookout for the "Did You Know" inserts in Sunday's bulletin each week. If you miss Sunday, the articles are linked on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/didyouknow.

Project Read
Project Read Did you know reading is one of the most important skills a child can learn? Think about the possibilities of our local youth growing up with the ability to read - lower crime rates, successful family units, and productive members of the community. Did you know there is a way to enable kids to work on their reading skills outside of school? With the school year ending and report cards being issued, plenty of parents are no doubt wondering what they can do to boost their children's academic performance. Newly published research suggests there is a simple and effective answer: Build up your home library. Keep reading...

MinistrySafe Training
If you still have need for MinistrySafe training, we have one remaining session scheduled. MinistrySafe training will be held this Sunday, May 31, at 12:00 noon, in the Family Life Center. This training is for all those who go on mission trips of any kind, or wish to volunteer for any ministry that invites ministry to children or youth. See Family Ministries news below for more details.

Appreciation for Rick & Liz Mang
Rev. Rick Mang announced a few weeks ago that he and Liz will be reappointed to First Methodist Church in Crowley, Texas, effective July 1. Their last Sunday with us will be June 14. Iron Men will host a "roast" in Rick's honor at their Fellowship Breakfast on Thursday, May 28, at 6:30 AM in the Family Life Center. Rick will preach on June 14, and we'll have a cookie reception to give everyone an opportunity to wish the Mangs well. If you would like to give toward a love offering for Rick and Liz, please mark "Mang Love Offering" in the memo of your gift (note that love offering gifts are not tax deductible). We also suggest that Sonic gift cards would be appropriate! We will be sad to see Rick and Liz leave us, but wish them blessings on their new ministry in Crowley. Click here to read Rick's announcement letter.

New Associate Pastor to be Appointed
We are excited to announce that Rev. Jenn Pick will be appointed as our new Associate Pastor at Annual Conference in June. New appointments take effect July 1, so Jenn will begin work that day. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee has had the opportunity to meet Jenn and we are excited about her new ministry here at FUMC Grapevine. Jenn has most recently been serving at First Methodist Church in Mansfield. She is a 2010 graduate of Drew Theological Seminary. Jenn is passionate about creative worship and international relations. Jenn has spent much of her ministry tenure in the New York Annual Conference, but she grew up in Red Oak, Texas. If you would like to learn more about Jenn's background, we invite you to view her resume (pdf). Jenn and her husband Todd have a 9-month-old son, Drew. Todd works in the Central Texas Conference Office coordinating the Healthy Church Initiative.

Top Needs

URGENT NEED FOR VAN DRIVERS SUNDAY MORNING

We need to add at least 2 drivers to our monthly schedule so we ensure our friends on Mustang Dr. can get to Sunday school and church each Sunday!  Johnny Almendarez can answer any of your questions but Armando describes this as being a very simple ministry. Leave church at 9:15 AM, pick up on Mustang and return to church in time for 9:45 AM service. You have to be at least 25 years of age, have a clear driving record and take an online "test" which is required by our church insurance. That's it!

Won't you please contact Johnny and let him know of your interest?  John_boy 1202@yahoo.com

Other top needs this week are:

  • Benevolence Funds. This fund provides emergency financial assistance to families in our community. If you'd like to give, please mark "Benevolence" in the memo of your gift.
  • Full Size Mattress. A neighbor living in the Grapevine Housing Authority (GHA) is in need of a firm mattress to fit her full-size box springs and frame. She is sleeping on her couch due to her poor mattress.
  • Two electric dryers. Two of our neighbors in Grapevine Housing Authority apartments are in need of dryers.

Contact Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org if you can help with either of the neighbor needs.

Collections for Our Troops!

The Support Our Military ministry supports our troops by sending cards and care packages. Support Our Military will be collecting items for care packages through this Sunday, May 31. You may donate items for the care packages or help pack care packages on Sunday, May 31, at 12:00 PM in the Family Life Center. All ages are welcome! Start collecting items to donate now. Visit www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/military for a full list of items that can be included in the care packages. Questions? Contact Paul Williamson at paw2404@gmail.com.

Project Read Book Drive

Project Read Project Read is in need of book donations to help fill our needs for Feed Our Kids summer distributions. During the summer we take books to the lunch sites for Feed our Kids all summer long (not just during the weeks the church is "in charge"). Volunteers read donated books with the children and give books away to be taken home.We need your donations of new or gently used books, especially for young readers and for Spanish speakers. Donation boxes can be found in the foyers of Founders Chapel and the Sanctuary as well as outside the church office through August 21. We can also use monetary donations to purchase books.  Note "Project Read" on your check or envelope if you wish to do so.

If you would like to volunteer to help, sign up on Serve Over Summer online at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/sos or in Sunday's bulletin. Read more about Project Read at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/projectread.

God Can Needs

We collected 107 items for GRACE this week. The GRACE Food Pantry is currently OUT of cooking oil, tuna, evaporated milk, canned soup/stew, spaghetti sauce, condensed milk, ramen noodles, children's cereal and syrup. They are currently LOW on condiments, vienna sausages, canned fruit and juice. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Feed Our Kids Big Week

Mark your calendars! Feed Our Kids Big Week will be July 6-10. We need to begin organizing now and get coordinators in place. We'll need site coordinators, site workers, kitchen helpers, shoppers, grillers, arts & crafts, recreation, and much more! If you're interested in helping, please sign up on the Serve Over Summer insert in your bulletin and at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/sos. Questions? Grapevine Village Swim Lessons
We are offering Swim Lessons to children in Grapevine Village this week, through May 28, 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Due to MinistrySafe policies, we need two adults in each vehicle, so more volunteers are needed. We pick up children at 5:00 from the mailboxes at Shady Oaks Trailer Park (Grapevine Village). Swim lessons are at Dove Waterpark, 1509 Hood Lane, Grapevine. When Swim lessons end at 6:45, we will drive the children home.If you would like to help on the last day, contact Sue Schultz (817-705-8362 or seg1024@yahoo.com).

Kenya Mission Trip Postponed

It is with heavy hearts that we have postponed our trip to Kenya.  The State Department has issued a travel warning regarding travel to Kenya due to the latest terrorist attacks.  Our Conference Office also discouraged any trips there, so after much prayer and discussion, the team decided to postpone until a later date. If you were preparing a letter for your AIDS orphan, you may hold onto it until our next trip. We will update you as plans develop for rescheduling. Please continue to keep our friends in Kenya in your prayers.

The Van and The Thrift Shop

Once upon a time there were two very important ministries that served our neighbors and needed more people who CARED!

This article is a repeat of information in order to share with you the urgency we have in filling some holes in our ongoing ministries.

Jesus said to "bring the little children to me," and that is what driving the church van will do! If you are 25 years or older, have a good driving record and will do a simple online training, you could be so instrumental in answering this call! It would take about an hour of your morning and you can drive one Sunday a month or more. Just know that your YES to picking up our Mustang Dr. neighbors will literally be bringing them to Christ! Be in touch with Johnny Almendarez to get more details, at john_boy1202@yahoo.com

Thrift Shop volunteers are needed to supplement teams going into the summer! Angelia Ozymy can provide the answers to all of your questions, but just know that if you have a few hours a week, you could become a part of an amazing "family" of volunteers! Thursday mornings, our new "after hours sessions" on Wednesday afternoon and being on Angelia's sub list is a great way to get connected! Contact Angelia at aozymy@verizon.net

Are you looking for a place to serve this summer? We have plenty of opportunities! From Vacation Bible School to Feed Our Kids and beyond... we have a place for you! Visit www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/sos or sign up using the Check-In insert in Sunday's bulletin.

iFratelli DoughNation Day to Benefit the Gala
FUMC Grapevine has been nominated to participate in the iFratelli DoughNation program. Our first DoughNation day of this year is Monday, June 1. On that day, eat at any of the iFratelli locations, mention FUMC Grapevine, and they will give 15% back to support our CAREibbean Cruise Gala! This applies to dine-in, carry-out and delivery! As you know, the Gala is a great event each year that raises an incredible amount of money for our ministries within the church and global missions through our Villages and the World Service Fund of the United Methodist Church. We appreciate our community partners who donate auction items! Consider asking your favorite businesses if they will donate an item, gift card, etc. to the auction. We are taking your donations NOW!

Access-Life Expo
Help our Helping Hands Special Needs Ministry in supporting the Access-Life Group, a non-profit Christian organization, by volunteering for the Outdoor Expo Event at Oak Grove Park, Grapevine Lake on Saturday, June 13, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This free event is for our local families living with disabilities. It is an outdoor adventure for all ages and levels of disabilities. Our church will be donating the water, ice and volunteers to make this the best Expo for the participants. If you would like to volunteer to help the day of the event, we'd love to have you! Volunteers and participants alike must register on the Access-Life website, www.access-life.org. Follow the information on the left side of the registration page. Questions? Contact Helping Hands Ministry Coordinator Joyce King at 817-488-9141.

Older Adult Ministry

Are you interested in "What's Next?" regarding our Older Adult Ministry? If the answer is YES, please join us on Thursday, May 28, at 6:00 PM in Leach Hall. This meeting (facilitated by Allen Barraclough) is to share and discuss the goals for Older Adult Ministry which were set at the Older Adult Ministry workshop meeting earlier this spring, and to determine the next steps that should be taken to develop an intentional ministry to older adults. All older adults who would like to attend, participate, and perhaps serve as future leaders in Older Adult Ministry are invited.

BSF Coming to FUMC Grapevine

FUMC Grapevine is excited to welcome the women's daytime meeting of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) to our campus, starting the fall of 2015. Some of you may be familiar with BSF. For those who are not, it is a weekly in-depth, inter-denominational Bible study group that has participants across the world. Our local Grapevine women's BSF will begin meeting at FUMC Grapevine starting in September, and we wanted to give you a heads-up about it! About 500 women and 200 children will fill our church campus each Wednesday morning. Get more information on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/bsf or at www.bsfinternational.org.

Spiritual Formation
About our Prayer Room
by Fred Rigdon

The dedication of our Prayer Room was a great success last Sunday! The pastors gave a moving dedication ceremony at the 11:00 service and a large number of people toured the room both before and after the service. Those taking the tour made a number of favorable comments about the room, both about the artwork and furnishings in the room and how serene and peaceful the room is.

For those who were not able to take the tour, we have posted the information that we provided on the Spiritual Formation blog. Keep reading...

During these training sessions we attempt to complete policies and procedures as well as screening of all volunteers. Come join us and get "caught caring" for the safety of all our Children and Youth!!!

*Anyone 18 years or older who wishes to volunteer for these programs must be MinistrySafe trained. Those attending CTCYM missions only are considered participants, but if an 18 year old wants to volunteer other places in the church they must be MinistrySafe trained.

Fellowship Team... Caught Caring
Kim Crater and her Fellowship team were certainly Caught Caring on Sunday morning for our first all-church brunch! A perfect plan was created for everyone to enjoy finger foods and fellowship before moving to the sanctuary for our one worship service on this Memorial Day weekend.

Kim enjoys using her gift of hospitality and has lots of experience feeding large groups of people since she has volunteered on many of our youth mission trips and hosted lots of school and other church events in her home. It is so gratifying to watch her be so inviting, welcoming others to be a part of our Fellowship events this year. Some folks planned, some shopped, some cooked, some decorated, some replenished our food and drink tables and some folks cleaned up. And everyone had a great time working together, meeting new friends, and serving as the Body of Christ.

Thank you each for showing how much you CARE!

Our Church Family... Caught Caring

Certainly, everyone is aware that we lost a dear friend and member of our church, Lina Finau, on May 14. Everyone that knew Lina and her family was shocked and saddened by the news. But since that day, incredible things have happened. During this time of loss and sadness, church groups and countless members have come forward asking what they could do to help. The outpouring of love and kindness has been amazing and once again, a very visible testament to the Caring attitude that our church embodies.

On the day we gathered to celebrate Lina's life, hundreds of members responded, to prepare for and welcome the 1,000 or more friends and family that were expected. The Bereavement Team was responsible for greeting and welcoming friends and family during the visitation and funeral service as well as setting up, hosting and cleaning up after the reception. And additional ministries such as Angel Food, Be Our Guest, Project Fun and several Bible study groups, as well as many individual members (too many to list), were responsible for the abundant (and delicious) baked goods and fruit served at the reception.

At a time when we were all heartbroken at the sudden loss of our dear friend, and struggling to know how to support her family, each of you provided a warm and loving presence...a bright light that truly made last Wednesday a beautiful day. A day where friends of different cultures could come together to sing, worship, share food, celebrate life and give thanks for the gift of a wonderful woman, a devoted servant and sweet friend in Christ. From the pastors and staff, we'd like to thank each and every one of you. You are an awesome church!

Costa Rica Mission Team... Caught Caring

Our team had a great time in Costa Rica last week, albeit muddy and lots of hard work! Here are some pics from the trip, and we'll have a recap from the team for next week's E-News. View more photos on our Facebook page (no FB log-in required).

CAUGHT CARING
As we continue to keep our focus on "Our One Word" for 2015 - CARING - we'd like to encourage you to keep your eyes open for people "caught caring." If you catch someone caring, send us a story! It can be just a few words, a picture, etc. Send your "caught caring" stories and photos to Melissia at melissiam@fumcg.org.

Visit us online at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org

E-News is published every Wednesday afternoon. The deadline for submissions is Tuesdays at 5:00 PM. Send requests to melissiam@fumcg.org.
