Church News
Main Street Fest This Weekend
This weekend is the Main Street Fest in Downtown Grapevine. This is a big fundraiser for our Youth and Scouts. We encourage you to come down to the festival and park in our lots. Please note that the Thrift Shop will be closed on Friday and Saturday. The Main Street Fest fundraiser supports our youth summer mission trips and other youth activities. We still have lots of volunteer spots to fill as well. All are invited to participate, whether you have youth or not! We invite you to find your spot and sign up on the Sign Up Genius page.
MinistrySafe Training
If you missed the "big" training day for MinistrySafe, we have three additional sessions scheduled. MinistrySafe training will be held on May 18 and 26 at 6:00 PM and May 31 at 12:00 noon. This training is for all those who go on mission trips of any kind, or wish to volunteer for any ministry that invites ministry to children or youth. See Family Ministries news below for more details.
Brunch & Worship on May 24
On Sunday, May 24, we will share together in brunch at 9:45 AM in the Family Life Center, followed by ONE WORSHIP SERVICE at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary. There will be no Sunday School that day. The Bilingual Praise Team will share special music at brunch, and the worship service will feature the 9 AM Praise Team, Chancel Choir and Agape Voice! Be sure to make plans to be here for this great morning of food, fellowship and worship! If you would like to help with the brunch, contact Kim Crater (eclaysman@aol.com).
Appreciation for Rick & Liz Mang
Rev. Rick Mang announced a few weeks ago that he and Liz will be reappointed to First Methodist Church in Crowley, Texas, effective July 1. Their last Sunday with us will be June 14. Rick will preach that day, and we'll have a cookie reception to give everyone an opportunity to wish the Mangs well. If you would like to give toward a love offering for Rick and Liz, please mark "Mang Love Offering" in the memo of your gift (note that love offering gifts are not tax deductible). We also suggest that Sonic gift cards would be appropriate! We will be sad to see Rick and Liz leave us, but wish them blessings on their new ministry in Crowley. Click here to read Rick's announcement letter.
New Associate Pastor to be Appointed We are excited to announce that Rev. Jenn Pick will be appointed as our new Associate Pastor at Annual Conference in June. New appointments take effect July 1, so Jenn will begin work that day. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee has had the opportunity to meet Jenn and we are excited about her new ministry here at FUMC Grapevine. Jenn has most recently been serving at First Methodist Church in Mansfield. She is a 2010 graduate of Drew Theological Seminary. Jenn is passionate about creative worship and international relations. Jenn has spent much of her ministry tenure in the New York Annual Conference, but she grew up in Red Oak, Texas. If you would like to learn more about Jenn's background, we invite you to view her resume (pdf). Jenn and her husband Todd have a 9-month-old son, Drew. Todd works in the Central Texas Conference Office coordinating the Healthy Church Initiative. |

Condolences
Christian condolences to...
- Larry Wetmore and family on the loss of his mother, Ruth Wetmore.
- Kathy Naylor and family on the loss of her nephew, Robert Moffett, on April 30.
Congrats to our College Seniors! We will be recognizing our graduating High School Seniors on Sunday, May 17. We would also like to congratulate those who are graduating with higher degrees (college, grad school, etc.) at a later date. If you or your child is graduating, please send a photo along with the name of your school and the degree earned to Melissia Mason (melissiam@fumcg.org) by Tuesday, May 26. Prayer Room
As a part of the Council on Ministries action plan, we have been working toward a goal of establishing a dedicated Prayer Room in the church. Volunteers and staff have been hard at work for a while now cleaning out, preparing and decorating a worshipful space in Founders Chapel. The new Prayer Room is located in what was once an office space for Media Ministries on the north side of the Founders Chapel chancel area. On Sunday, May 24, we will consecrate this sacred space during our one worship service at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary. You are invited to take a moment to visit the Prayer Room any time the building is open.

Top Needs
Our top needs this week are:
- Benevolence Funds. This fund provides emergency financial assistance to families in our community. If you'd like to give, please mark "Benevolence" in the memo of your gift.
- Full Size Mattress. A neighbor living in the Grapevine Housing Authority (GHA) is in need of a firm mattress to fit her full-size box springs and frame. She is sleeping on her couch due to her poor mattress.
- Dryer. A neighbor at GHA is in need of an electric dryer.
Contact Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org if you can help with either of the neighbor needs.
Project Read Book Drive
Project Read is in need of book donations to help fill our needs for Feed Our Kids summer distributions. During the summer we take books to the lunch sites for Feed our Kids all summer long (not just during the weeks the church is "in charge"). Volunteers read donated books with the children and give books away to be taken home.We need your donations of new or gently used books, especially for young readers and for Spanish speakers. Donation boxes can be found in the foyers of Founders Chapel and the Sanctuary as well as outside the church office from May 24 through August 21. If you would like to volunteer to help, sign up on Serve Over Summer online at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/sos or in Sunday's bulletin. Read more about Project Read at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/projectread.

Collections for Our Troops!
The Support Our Military ministry supports our troops by sending cards and care packages. Support Our Military will be collecting items for care packages on May 24 and 31, with a packing party on May 31. You may donate items for the care packages or help pack care packages on Sunday, May 31, at 12:00 PM in the Family Life Center. All ages are welcome! Start collecting items to donate now. Tornado in Van
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) reports that the council chair of Van United Methodist Church and his wife, a former secretary of the church, died in the tornado that hit Van on May 10. Early response teams from the Texas Conference and North Texas Conference expect to be in Van by May 13. Please keep the community of Van and the United Methodist Church there in your prayers. Donations to UMCOR's United States Disaster Response Advance #901670 help support the denomination's continuing response to all U.S. disasters, including the recent storms in our area and across the south. To give aid, go to www.umcor.org and donate to U. S. Disaster Relief (Advance #901670). To read more about the United Methodist response to the recent storms, click here.

We have a team headed to Costa Rica this Saturday, May 16, through May 23. Some of the team members will be leaving on Friday and Monday, but the majority of the team will gather at DFW Airport Terminal D at 2:00 PM on Saturday. If you would like to see them off and pray over them, you are invited to meet them there. The team will spend most of their time at the Methodist Children's Home in San Jose. Our team is: Armando Alvarado, Lindsey Breunig, Joy Dister, Mary Doyle, Terry Doyle, Preston Schaap, Tommy Hudspeth, Cathy Jackson, Matt Jackson, Mateo Martinez, Debbie Price and Anna Zapatero. Please keep the team members in your prayers as they travel.
Kenya Mission Trip - Updated!
There will be 11 people going on the Kenya trip this summer (June 15-27). We are still in need of funds to help cover the cost of the t-shirts we take for our AIDS orphan celebration day. If you would like to provide your child a t-shirt, the recommended donation is $15 per child. Just note "Kenya t-shirts" in the memo line of your check. Also, we are still in great need of gauze pads for the dispensary - either 2x2 or 4x4. Finally, it's time to bring your letters for your AIDS orphans. We ask that you please not include anything breakable, and limit the size of your envelope to a 9"x12" size. Please bring your letters by Sunday, June 7.
Latvia Village News Due to conflicts with schedules, we will not be taking a trip to Latvia in September as we had originally planned. However, there will be several members of our church going in August during the Latvia Annual Conference gathering. Also, during this year's Friends of Latvia meeting, we decided to try to hold next year's Friends of Latvia gathering in Latvia! Keep that in mind if you are thinking about making a trip to Latvia, and mark June 2016 as a possible date. We'll let you know when we have more details. We would also like to congratulate Mark Croft, who is the newly-elected Chair of the national Friends of Latvia!

AFTER HOURS SESSIONS AT THRIFT SHOP
Sounds fun doesn't it? After Hours. It will be fun because this is an entirely new opportunity for those of you who just have a few hours a week you can give for a greater good! And perhaps Summer is your only season when you DO have weekday hours available! Need child care? Our nursery will be open for your reservation! Contact Monica Vickery (monicav@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x145).
Our Thrift Shop turns over such an incredible volume of donated merchandise every day, every week, that for those hearing the statistics for the first time, it is simply staggering. Hard to believe that little white house on College Street, which is only open (staffed by volunteers) Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 - 11:30 AM, has paid out over $24,000 last year to help others. That's right... $24,000!!
Because of that, director Angelia Ozymy recognizes the need for an AFTER HOURS session and beginning Wednesday, June 3, volunteers will be needed from 12 noon until 2:00 PM if you would like to be on this new team, please let her know. She will provide more details of what this group will be doing, but picture unpacking boxes of seasonal clothing to price, tag and hang on their racks as well as sorting and processing the out of season clothing donations. "After Hours" is the name because there will be no customers shopping during the noon - 2:00 PM time when this new team will be working. What a great way to serve with a handful of others who also have a heart to give back!
The Thrift Shop is an amazing outreach ministry of FUMCG and this is your chance to experience it in a new way! Angelia can be reached at aozymy@verizon.net.

Just Added... Drivers and Chaperones Needed for Swim Lessons We will be offering Swim Lessons to children in Grapevine Village again this year. The dates are May 26-28, 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Drivers and chaperones will be needed to drive children to and from swim lessons. Due to MinistrySafe policies, we need two adults in each vehicle, so more volunteers are needed. We will pick up children at 5:00 from the mailboxes at Shady Oaks Trailer Park (Grapevine Village). Swim lessons are at Dove Waterpark, 1509 Hood Lane, Grapevine. When Swim lessons end at 6:45, we will drive the children home. Car seats are also needed! If you would like to help, sign up on Serve Over Summer or contact Sue Schultz (817-705-8362 or seg1024@yahoo.com).

Benedict of Nursia
by Fred Rigdon
One of our spiritual formation goals is to establish a daily rhythm that weaves our spiritual formation practices into our work and our relationships with others that allows us to remain aware of God's presence throughout our day. Benedict's Rule, although probably not practical for anyone not living in a monastery, can give us insight in how to establish our own personal daily rule. Benedict, the son of a wealthy Roman noble, was born in 480 in Nursia, Italy and was raised in Rome. At about the age of twenty, he left his studies and the vices of the city behind intending to live as a hermit. Keep reading...

Parenting Seminar: Faith, Friendships, and Belonging
Being a parent in today's world is tough! Youth and children do not come with a manual, and parents don't have divine foreknowledge to be aware of every situation their child will face. TODAY, Wednesday, May 13, from 6:00-7:30 PM, FUMC Grapevine will host a free seminar for parents. Dena Kohleriter, LCSW/Family Therapist from the Momentous Institute, will lead us in "Faith, Fellowship and Belonging: Dealing with acceptance, rejection and bullying." This seminar is for parents of youth, pre-teens and children. As a community of faith, it is our responsibility to help strengthen families throughout our community. We are dedicated to helping families grow together while balancing parenting, family life and work. Please join us for this exciting learning opportunity. Light refreshments will be provided.

Childcare is provided. Please RSVP your childcare needs to Monica Vickery ( monicav@fumcg.org).

If you plan on volunteering for VBS, Fiestas, Project Read, Summer Swim, Youth Missions* (adult sponsors), Tween missions, Sunday School, youth, village activities, or mission trips, this applies to you. The Central Texas Conference of the Methodist Church has adopted these new policies and all volunteers must complete the 4 steps of training: online abuse video, policies and procedures, screening (application, interview, reference checks) and background checks by June 10. During these training sessions we attempt to complete policies and procedures as well as screening of all volunteers. Come join us and get "caught caring" for the safety of all our Children and Youth!!!
*Anyone 18 years or older who wishes to volunteer for these programs must be MinistrySafe trained. Those attending CTCYM missions only are considered participants, but if an 18 year old wants to volunteer other places in the church they must be MinistrySafe trained.

This week, we've had several people caught caring...
- The entire congregation was caught caring for the Williams family after the death of Ginger Williams. Bob Williams and family would like to thank you all for your care and concern for them during this difficult time.
- The Weekend Food team was caught caring as they provided a breakfast for nurses and counselors from our local schools on Tuesday morning.
- Ginny Middleton was caught caring... popping pudding cups apart to make it easier for the Weekend Food to do their bagging. She opens all of the big cases of pudding, removes the inside packaging, then replaces them neatly back in the box. This is a HUGE timesaver for the baggers!
- The United Methodist Women were caught caring as they prepared 24 "May Baskets" filled with goodies for our shut-ins.
Gifts Given
- A gift has been given to the AIDS orphan support in memory of Mitchell Maness by Don and Beverly Myers, Kelli Simpson, and Rick and Linda Davies.
- A gift has been given to the Permanent Endowment Fund in memory of Ginger Williams by Chuck and Jo Ann Compton.
- A gift has been given to the Benevolence Fund in memory of Judy Tiedtke by Ken and Kristine Hall.
Congratulations!
We would like to congratulate graduating seniors Bryan Scott and Addi Payne, who were both awarded Rotary Scholarships by the Grapevine Rotary Club today!
