DID YOU KNOW?
"Did You Know" is a series of feature articles that highlight various aspects of ministry in the church. Be on the lookout for the "Did You Know" inserts in Sunday's bulletin each week. If you miss Sunday, the articles are linked on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/didyouknow.
Jan's Blankets of Hope Did you know that Jan's Blankets of Hope honors Jan Parrett, one of our deceased church members who began Blankets of Hope with Cheri Rutledge in 2007? Did you know the ministry was created to bless the lives of individuals undergoing treatment for substance abuse? Our Blankets of Hope ministry is now in its eighth year with an estimated 1,800 blankets provided so far to those going through addiction treatment at Valley Hope Addiction Center in Grapevine. Did you know that our Blankets of Hope team strives to deliver 70 blankets each quarter to Valley Hope? Our team is currently about thirty volunteers dedicated to making blankets for those who need to know that someone cares during their most challenging times. Keep reading...

Appreciation for Rick & Liz Mang Rev. Rick Mang announced a couple of weeks ago that he and Liz will be reappointed to First Methodist Church in Crowley, Texas, effective July 1. Their last Sunday with us will be June 14. We will have a cookie reception that morning to give everyone an opportunity to wish the Mangs well. If you would like to give toward a love offering for Rick and Liz, please mark "Mang Love Offering" in the memo of your gift (note that love offering gifts are not tax deductible). We also suggest that Sonic gift cards would be appropriate! We will be sad to see Rick and Liz leave us, but wish them blessings on their new ministry in Crowley. Click here to read Rick's announcement letter.
New Associate Pastor to be Appointed We are excited to announce that Rev. Jenn Pick will be appointed as our new Associate Pastor at Annual Conference in June. New appointments take effect July 1, so Jenn will begin work that day. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee has had the opportunity to meet Jenn and we are excited about her new ministry here at FUMC Grapevine. Jenn has most recently been serving at First Methodist Church in Mansfield. She is a 2010 graduate of Drew Theological Seminary. Jenn is passionate about creative worship and international relations. Jenn has spent much of her ministry tenure in the New York Annual Conference, but she grew up in Red Oak, Texas. Jenn and her husband Todd have a 9-month-old son, Drew. Top Needs
Our top needs this week are:
- Benevolence Funds. This fund provides emergency financial assistance to families in our community. If you'd like to give, please mark "Benevolence" in the memo of your gift.
- Full Size Mattress. A neighbor living in the Grapevine Housing Authority (GHA) is in need of a firm mattress to fit her full-size box springs and frame. She is sleeping on her couch due to her poor mattress.
- Cleaning. A neighbor at GHA who is unable to clean her apt due to health issues would appreciate someone who might be able to help her.
Contact Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org if you can help with either of the neighbor needs.
Give a Gift in Honor of Mom!
Mother's Day is coming up Sunday, May 10! Still looking for the perfect gift? Give a gift in honor of your mom that helps families in need! Your gifts to the Benevolence Fund help moms in crisis to provide for their families. To give, simply mark your gift "Benevolence" and put it in the offering plate or give online at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/give. If you would like to let your mom know about your gift, we have small cards available in the church office and in the foyers for you to include in your Mother's Day card.

God Can Needs Last week, one of our local schools held a food drive and brought the food to us to donate to GRACE. When added to our donations from last week, there was so much food, it was impossible to count each item. The donation weighed in at 1,350 pounds of food! Thanks to all of you and to our community for continuing to donate food to those in need. The GRACE Food Pantry is currently OUT of cooking oil, tuna, evaporated milk, canned soup/stew, spaghetti sauce, condensed milk, ramen noodles, children's cereal and syrup. The are currently LOW on condiments, vienna sausages, canned fruit and juice. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Response to Nepal
With over 5,000 deaths and millions displaced by the recent earthquake, United Methodists are on the ground bringing prayers and aid to the people of Nepal and neighboring China and India. You can be a part of the relief effort by giving your time in prayer, and your financial resources for disaster relief. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) provides emergency food, shelter and medicine after natural and man-made disasters, provides humanitarian relief to refugees and displaced persons and works to overcome world hunger and poverty. One hundred percent of your tax-deductible gifts go to the emergency response or Advance project that you designate. To give aid to Nepal, go to www.umcor.org and donate to International Disaster Relief (Advance #982450). To read more about the United Methodist response in Nepal, click here.
Save the Date - Feed Our Kids Big Week!

Around the Villages
There will be 11 people going on the Kenya trip this summer (June 15-27). We are planning to take t-shirts as we do every year to our AIDS orphans. If you would like to provide your child a t-shirt, the recommended donation is $15 per child. Just note "Kenya t-shirts" in the memo line of your check. The team will also be taking at least six laptop computers for the Synod staff. If you would like to help purchase a laptop (or a part of one), the cost is $336 per unit. Please note "Kenya Laptops" in the memo line. We will also be conducting two medical camps while there. The dispensary is always in need of gauze pads... either 2x2 or 4x4. We appreciate your help with all these things and will keep you updated on our itinerary as it firms up!

  Volunteer Connection
iCare Ministry Needs More Human Arrows
Will you give 20 minutes, one Sunday each month? Pick your Sunday, pick your favorite spot from 8 locations on our busy campus to stand from 9:30 to 9:50, be ready to say 'hi' and then to offer a bit of assistance if someone is looking for help getting to their next spot! iCare team members will be an extra layer of friendliness each week and we need about 20 more individuals to complete our roster where we've identified 8 key locations to be most helpful. You will be equipped with a collection of brochures to refer to, a map of our campus and a current list of what is happening in which rooms that day. You will wear an iCare button for easy identification and you will be blessed to be a blessing! Contact Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org if you would like more details.

Growing Older Without Fear What is your greatest fear about growing older? Losing your sense of humor? Losing your looks? Losing your memory? Losing your sense of control? With wisdom and wit, the book Growing Older without Fear by Gary Kindley takes a fresh look at the process of aging. Rev. Annette Sowell will lead a book study on this book starting Tuesday, May 12, at 7:00 PM in Room 2002 of the Family Life Center. The cost of the book is $15. Please RSVP to Annette at annette.sowell@sbcglobal.net by May 3.
Find Us Faithful: Conference Event The Central Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church will be hosting a workshop for those who are interested in ministry to older adults. The event will take place here at FUMC Grapevine on Saturday, May 2, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Older members have been faithful leaders in church discipleship for years. Yet, when they are no longer able to lead or attend inside the church, the growth in faith options become dramatically decreased. The purpose of this workshop is to establish the need and provide easy and effective discipleship and worship opportunities for people who are frail. Opportunities will be modeled and participants will develop their own plans to take home. If you are interested, get more details and register at www.ctcumc.org/FindUsFaithful.

Refreshing the Soul - Lectio Divina
Please join us for the next gathering of Refreshing the Soul on Tuesday, May 12, at 7:00 PM in Roundtable Room. We will be exploring the practice of lectio divina, a way of praying the Scriptures that has been a fruitful resource of growing in relationship with Christ for many centuries. In Latin, lectio divina means "sacred or divine reading" and describes a way of reading the Scriptures in which we let go of our agenda and open ourselves to what God wants to say to us. Come join us as we prayerfully listen to Scripture, as the Benedictines instructed, "with the ear of the heart" that holds a word from God such as a word of comfort, instruction, challenge, or assurance. All are welcome and no experience is needed. Contact Nancy Johnson for further information (pajnaj@verizon.net).
Teresa of Avila
by Fred Rigdon
Teresa of Avila was born in 1515 in the Spanish province of Avila. Shortly after the death of her mother, she was sent at the age of 16 to be educated in a convent of Augustinian nuns. After 18 months in the convent Teresa developed what was probably malaria and returned to live with her father. After reading the Letters of St. Jerome she decided to pursue a religious life. At the age of 20 Teresa entered a Carmelite monastery, but again suffered a serious illness that left her legs paralyzed for three years and forced her to return home. While recovering from her illness, she experienced visions of Christ and began to practice meditation and contemplative prayer, which she called the "prayer of quiet." Keep reading...

Community Job Fair We received the following update after the Job Fair that was held a couple of weeks ago... Thank you to all of you who volunteered!
On behalf of the Community Outreach Center, the Grapevine Police Department and the Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank you for your dedication and service in the job fair. Thanks to your hard work, the 2015 Grapevine Job Fair was a huge success with over 600 job seekers in attendance. Of the more than 55 companies that were in attendance at the job fair, over half said that what they most liked about the job fair was the friendliness and helpfulness of the volunteers. In fact, many companies and job seekers told us that this was the best job fair that they had ever attended, which is a great testament to your hard work and dedication. We received too many positive comments about the helpfulness and professionalism of the volunteers to mention all of them. However, this comment really stood out: "I enjoyed the job fair from start to finish. Everyone working the job fair was very nice. They even provided us with plenty of refreshments." Thanks to your hard work and service, hundreds of people in our community now have jobs lined up. In fact, here are some things that happened thanks to you:
- Over 600 job seekers attended the fair
- Over 55 companies looking to hire attended the fair
- Over 1000 job applications were submitted at the fair
- Over 235 interviews were conducted on the spot at the fair
- 100% of the companies in attendance want to have another Grapevine Job Fair
In addition, the companies that attended indicated to us that they identified over 500 potential hires who they have already offered a job to, or who will be offered a job in the coming days!
None of this would have been possible were it not for you and your desire to serve our community by volunteering at the 2015 Grapevine Job Fair. We hope you will join us for future community events.

The stories in the latest edition of The Church at Work electronic magazine (or e-zine) show how you can be caring through any of our six areas of ministry... discipleship, worship, fellowship, compassion, mission and evangelism. We've also included the stories church members have shared when they have caught someone caring! You'll see pictures of people caught in the act of caring, and read about Bebe Hubbard, Kay Green, Mechal Arnold, Lauren McCarley, Georjean Sherriff, Bruce Herndon, some gardeners, and some random person in the Wal-Mart parking lot... and much more!

CAUGHT CARING
|
As we continue to keep our focus on "Our One Word" for 2015 - CARING - we'd like to encourage you to keep your eyes open for people "caught caring." If you catch someone caring, send us a story! It can be just a few words, a picture, etc. Send your "caught caring" stories and photos to Melissia at melissiam@fumcg.org.
If you didn't purchase a "Get Caught Caring" t-shirt, we have a few extras available in the church office. Contact Melissia ( melissiam@fumcg.org) to see if we have your size. The cost per shirt is $10, which goes to missions. |
