Friends of Latvia Begins Tomorrow!

We have the honor of hosting the national gathering of Friends of Latvia here at FUMC Grapevine on April 16-18. We will also be welcoming 16 visitors (pastors, spouses, lay leaders) from Latvia, plus visitors from other churches all over the country! We would like to invite you all to join in on any of the informational meetings and worship during the Friends of Latvia conference... but we'd like to draw your attention especially to Friday evening, April 17. Come worship with us at 5:00 PM in Founders Chapel. Then, we will have a potluck dinner at 6:00 PM in the Family Life Center. Please bring a side dish to share! All are welcome and encouraged to come meet our Latvian guests, as well as friends from other churches all over the U.S.! We'll need to be sure and provide plenty of food, as our guests will be here from out of town and not able to contribute to the potluck. To see more about all of the opportunities during the Friends of Latvia weekend, click here to view the full itinerary (PDF). If you would like to participate in the other meals on the schedule, please RSVP to Bev Campisi (beverlyc@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x140).

DID YOU KNOW?
"Did You Know" is a series of feature articles that highlight various aspects of ministry in the church. Be on the lookout for the "Did You Know" inserts in Sunday's bulletin each week. If you miss Sunday, the articles are linked on our website at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/didyouknow.

MinistrySafe
Did you know that the Central Texas Conference established a new safety program called MinistrySafe that mandates updated training for all adults involved in children and youth activities? This program is to be implemented by June 10, and includes all adult volunteers participating in any ministry that children and youth attend. We have many such ministries, including Village activities, mission trips, summer swim lessons, Bryan's Buddies Respite, Feed our Kids, Project Read, Be Our Guest, and all other children and youth activities sponsored by our church. You can imagine how many members are involved in all these activities, and therefore, how many members need to have their training credentials updated with this new MinistrySafe program. Blankets of Hope Work Day

Do you have a compassionate heart for the Blankets of Hope Ministry to make blankets for the residents of Valley Hope, a substance abuse treatment facility located in Grapevine?  If you do and your schedule allows, our next work session is scheduled for Monday, April 27, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, in Leach Hall. Our ministry is a busy one with some of you continuing to work at home sewing, cutting, tying and laundering blankets, while others of you are waiting to join us during organized work sessions at the church. A donation of fleece for our ministry will be appreciated; however, fleece will be available during our work session to make into handmade blankets bathed in prayer. If you have sharp fabric scissors, please bring them. Questions? Contact Carole Lee (carole_lee@verizon.net).

God Can Needs
The GRACE Food Pantry has updated their list of needs. They are currently OUT of cooking oil, tuna, evaporated milk, canned soup/stew, spaghetti sauce, condensed milk, ramen noodles, children's cereal and syrup. The are currently LOW on condiments, vienna sausages, canned fruit and juice. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Spring Into Missions - Grapevine Village!

On Saturday, April 18, we are planning a clean-up day in the Grapevine Village. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Debbie Price (debbiep@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x108). That day is also the EPIC Earth Day in Grapevine, so look for ways that you can recycle and help clean up around you.

Kenya Mission Trip

There will be 12 people going on the Kenya trip this summer (June 15-27).  We are planning to take t-shirts as we do every year to our AIDS orphans. If you would like to provide your child a t-shirt, the recommended donation is $15 per child. Just note "Kenya t-shirts" in the memo line of your check. The team will also be taking at least six laptop computers for the Synod staff. If you would like to help purchase a laptop (or a part of one), the cost is $336 per unit. Please note "Kenya Laptops" in the memo line. We will also be conducting two medical camps while there. The dispensary is always in need of gauze pads... either 2x2 or 4x4. We appreciate your help with all these things and will keep you updated on our itinerary as it firms up!

Latvia Mission Trip
We are currently planning our next mission trip to Latvia for September 11-21. We'll be building relationships with our covenant congregation at Riga First Church and attending the Apple Festival at Wesley Camp to help winterize the camp and harvest apples. If you are interested in going on this trip, please contact Melissia Mason (melissiam@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x109). We hope to make a decision as to whether this trip will make by mid-April.

iCARE - Do you want to show that you do too?

An exciting new caring ministry team is forming to help show how much we care on Sunday mornings, just navigating our campus facilities! April 26 we are meeting at 9:15 AM in Leach Hall for an informational meeting and walk about.

We are a welcoming church. We hear this from our guests all the time. They tell us how friendly everyone is. And that is great! But would you agree our church campus and facility can be a bit confusing? We have many points of access which can cause stress just in the arriving! Our church address is 422 Church St. but our main sanctuary entrance is off of Scribner St. and we have a Ball St. driveway into the lower parking lot. Some folks who worship in the main sanctuary and want to attend a class, might never have been in the older building complex! Will that sidewalk take me to the place I hope to worship or attend a class? And what about crossing Church St. to attend a class in the Senior Activity Center? Who meets over there anyway?

We want to show people how very much we care every Sunday morning when they arrive and try to navigate their mornings, so that their experience will be more comfortable whether they are first time visitors or long time members.

Being a part of this newly forming team will allow you to put your "iCARE" into action! You will be scheduled one Sunday a month to wear an iCare button and be standing ready to welcome folks to FUMCG and to direct them to their next place. In the convention industry people who perform this act of service are affectionately called Human Arrows and save people lots of steps and frustration. During our high traffic time each Sunday between 9:30 and 10:00, caring individuals will be stationed in 4 key traffic areas of our interior hallways. An outside team will arrive prior to each worship service, as folks arrive at our various parking locations and at key sidewalk intersections, to help greet and encourage them as they move on to their hoped for destination!

If you are interested in attending this gathering to learn more, but cannot adjust your schedule that day to meet for less than an hour, please let Bev Campisi know at 817-797-4936 and we can get together another time.

Growing Older Without Fear
What is your greatest fear about growing older? Losing your sense of humor? Losing your looks? Losing your memory? Losing your sense of control? With wisdom and wit, the book Growing Older without Fear by Gary Kindley takes a fresh look at the process of aging. Rev. Annette Sowell will lead a book study on this book starting Tuesday, May 12, at 7:00 PM in Room 2002 of the Family Life Center. The cost of the book is $15. Please RSVP to Annette at annette.sowell@sbcglobal.net by May 3.

Find Us Faithful: Conference Event
The Central Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church will be hosting a workshop for those who are interested in ministry to older adults. The event will take place here at FUMC Grapevine on Saturday, May 2, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Older members have been faithful leaders in church discipleship for years. Yet, when they are no longer able to lead or attend inside the church, the growth in faith options become dramatically decreased. The purpose of this workshop is to establish the need and provide easy and effective discipleship and worship opportunities for people who are frail. Opportunities will be modeled and participants will develop their own plans to take home. If you are interested, get more details and register at www.ctcumc.org/FindUsFaithful.
Spiritual Formation
Prayer Beads
by Fred Rigdon

Prayer beads are used to count the repetition of prayers or devotions. The English word bead derives from the Old English word 'bede" which means prayer. In the 3rd century, the Desert Fathers and Mothers filled their pockets with pebbles and would toss out a pebble each time they completed a prayer. When their pockets were empty they would gather more pebbles and begin again. Eventually, they had the idea of using knotted ropes to count their prayers rather than constantly gathering pebbles. The exact origin of prayer beads remains unclear, but strings of beads, presumably used for prayer, have been found in the tombs of saints as early as the 7th century. These strings of beads were called "Paternosters" and were used to count repetitions of the Lord's Prayer.

Parenting Seminar: Faith, Friendships, and Belonging

Dena Kohleriter, LCSW/Family Therapist from the Momentous Institute, will lead us in "Faith, Fellowship and Belonging: Dealing with acceptance, rejection and bullying." We've also included the stories church members have shared when they have caught someone caring! You'll see pictures of people caught in the act of caring, and read about Bebe Hubbard, Kay Green, Mechal Arnold, Lauren McCarley, Georjean Sherriff, Bruce Herndon, some gardeners, and some random person in the Wal-Mart parking lot... and much more!
