Blankets of Hope Work Day

Do you have a compassionate heart for the Blankets of Hope Ministry to make blankets for the residents of Valley Hope, a substance abuse treatment facility located in Grapevine?  If you do and your schedule allows, our next work session is scheduled for Monday, April 27, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, in Leach Hall. Our ministry is a busy one with some of you continuing to work at home sewing, cutting, tying and laundering blankets, while others of you are waiting to join us during organized work sessions at the church. A donation of fleece for our ministry will be appreciated; however, fleece will be available during our work session to make into handmade blankets bathed in prayer. If you have sharp fabric scissors, please bring them. Questions? Contact Carole Lee (carole_lee@verizon.net).

God Can Needs - UPDATED
We collected 176 items for God Can last week. The GRACE Food Pantry has updated their list of needs. They are currently OUT of cooking oil, tuna, evaporated milk, canned soup/stew, spaghetti sauce, condensed milk, ramen noodles, children's cereal and syrup. The are currently LOW on condiments, vienna sausages, canned fruit and juice. Click here for GRACE's full updated list of needs (pdf). Please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Serve at the Grapevine Job Fair
Every week, we see people who are in dire financial situations, looking for work. You have the opportunity to help these individuals in a very practical way! On Saturday, April 11, the Grapevine Community Outreach Center will host a Job Fair from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Timberline Elementary. Volunteers will be needed to put out yard signs before the event, help set up the morning of the event, and serve in many different ways during the event itself. Click here to sign up online to volunteer! For assistance with Volunteer Registration or any other questions regarding the Grapevine Job Fair, please contact the Grapevine Community Outreach Center at 817-421-2192 or GCOCjobfair@gmail.com.

The Gatehouse at Grapevine
Many of you have been watching the progress of the Gatehouse at Grapevine, a new community for women and children in crisis situations. The Gatehouse has let us know of some needs for household items for the new families moving in. Those needs include living room and bedroom lamps and wall decor (picture frames, mirrors, artwork). These items can be dropped by the Gatehouse Community Center (670 Westport Parkway, M-F 9 AM to 4:30 PM). In addition, they have created an Amazon Wish List. Items purchase through this list can be shipped directly to the Gatehouse. Questions? Friends of Latvia

We have the honor of hosting the national gathering of Friends of Latvia here at FUMC Grapevine on April 16-18. We will also be welcoming 16 visitors (pastors, spouses, lay leaders) from Latvia, plus visitors from other churches all over the country! We would like to invite you all to join in on any of the informational meetings and worship during the Friends of Latvia conference... but we'd like to draw your attention especially to Friday evening, April 17. Come worship with us at 5:00 PM in Founders Chapel. Then, we will have a potluck dinner at 6:00 PM in the Family Life Center. Please bring a side dish to share! All are welcome and encouraged to come meet our Latvian guests, as well as friends from other churches all over the U.S.! We'll need to be sure and provide plenty of food, as our guests will be here from out of town and not able to contribute to the potluck. To see more about all of the opportunities during the Friends of Latvia weekend, click here to view the full itinerary (PDF). If you would like to participate in the other meals on the schedule, please RSVP on the Check-In in Sunday's bulletin or to Bev Campisi (beverlyc@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x140).

Spring Into Missions - Grapevine Village!

On Saturday, April 18, we are planning a clean-up day in the Grapevine Village. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Debbie Price (debbiep@fumcg.org or 817-481-2559 x108). That day is also the EPIC Earth Day in Grapevine, so look for ways that you can recycle and help clean up around you.

Kenya Mission Trip

There will be 12 people going on the Kenya trip this summer (June 15-27).  We are planning to take t-shirts as we do every year to our AIDS orphans. If you would like to provide your child a t-shirt, the recommended donation is $15 per child. Just note "Kenya t-shirts" in the memo line of your check. The team will also be taking at least six laptop computers for the Synod staff. If you would like to help purchase a laptop (or a part of one), the cost is $336 per unit. Please note "Kenya Laptops" in the memo line. We will also be conducting two medical camps while there. The dispensary is always in need of gauze pads... either 2x2 or 4x4. We appreciate your help with all these things and will keep you updated on our itinerary as it firms up!

Latvia Mission Trip
We are currently planning our next mission trip to Latvia for September 11-21. We'll be building relationships with our covenant congregation at Riga First Church and attending the Apple Festival at Wesley Camp to help winterize the camp and harvest apples. If you are interested in going on this trip, please contact Melissia Mason (melissiam@fumcg.org, 817-481-2559 x109). We hope to make a decision as to whether this trip will make by mid-April.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS WHO WERE CAUGHT CARING!

What a Glorious Easter Sunday we all enjoyed! I praise God for the opportunity to welcome visitors to our church on any occasion, but it is always especially special to do so on Easter Sunday. Some come attending a church service for the first time in years, some come because they are grandparents in town to watch their little loves hunt Easter eggs, and many of us come just because it's what we do on any Sunday!

While I am daily grateful for anyone who volunteers to do anything in service to others, around a big holiday like Easter, I am especially grateful for those of you who are in town and available to be here to help in so many ways to make Holy Week even holier. It is so for me, and I know it is so for our entire appreciative staff.

It began weeks ago with a big team of folks who stuck labels on our Holy Week postcards to be mailed out. I wonder who came to our church because of receiving that postcard and were blessed because of the service they might have attended?
So many of you volunteered in giving the flowering plants that graced our worship spaces and the team of folks who unwrapped and placed all of those plants changing black drapes to white drapes as the Easter Weekend progressed. And those who came to be part of our welcoming teams for our Maundy Thursday services, our communion servers, our ushers. Good Friday the volunteers were out front again and in our sound booth again, and serving behind the curtains those incredible voices and musicians who provided such a meaningful experience. I love knowing some of you were out of town yet had volunteered your time and talents creating material things which enhanced our worship services and even provided food items which were shared for the enjoyment of those who were here all morning. Our sidewalks and parking areas were staffed with volunteers helping people locate the service they were looking for and our golf cart driver was on alert to assist as needed. And after the church services ended our finance committee reps took the deposit to the bank, and even still, volunteers with our flower delivery ministry team are sharing those plants some donated with our members who can't get out to participate in all of the services they would like to. Our office volunteers and money counters stay longer with the added number of registrations and prayer requests to sort through. Our pew back team members have more work to do than usual, removing Easter giving envelops and replacing with regular ones. I could never list names to thank, knowing I would forget some I didn't even know about, but please know even if I left out some groups here, you are appreciated!

I am reminded of the children's song, "I am the church, you are the church, we are the church together. All who follow Jesus all around the world, yes we're the church together." And I thank our God for each of you who volunteer.

adult-discAdult Discipleship
The Way of Forgiveness
It takes a lot of willingness and practice to see life from God's perspective. Perhaps nothing goes more against the grain of human nature than the ideas of forgiving those who wound us and accepting forgiveness from others. In April, we will be offering a class called Companions in Christ, The Way of Forgiveness to deal with these issues. In this eight-week study, Pat Laster and Gail Hoggatt will guide participants through the transformational process of forgiveness by examining shame, guilt, and anger. Join us on Wednesdays, starting April 8, at 6:30 PM in Room 2002. The cost of the study guide is $11. Please contact Pat (patlaster@verizon.net) or Gail (gail.hoggatt@sbcglobal.net) to request a book.

Sisters in Faith... Sacred Rhythms: Creating Space for God
Annette Sowell will be leading Sisters in Faith on our journey through the second of six Sacred Rhythms topics with a Guided Meditation on Thursday, April 9, 7:00-8:00 PM in Leach Hall. We will be supporting our Costa Rica Village need for clothing for infants and expecting mothers, so please bring new or gently used items that will be taken on the Spring Mission trip. We will also be launching our new Sisters In Faith Forum & Online Bible Study! Please join us to learn more! Questions? Contact Nicole Wilson (817-307-7190, nicole.wilson22@verizon.net).

All Seasons Begins New Study
The All Seasons Sunday School Class will begin a new study the Sunday after Easter, April 12. If you've been looking for a class to join, this is a great time to jump in! All Seasons is open to adults of all ages and stages, and meets at 9:45 AM in the Game Room of the Senior Activity Center (across Church Street from Founders Chapel). The new study will be on the book Forgotten God by Francis Chan, an invitation to understand, embrace, and follow the Holy Spirit's direction in our lives. "Could it be that we've forgotten the One who distinguishes us from every religion and cult in the world?" Come learn more about the "forgotten God" - the Holy Spirit.

Combined Sunday School Event
Please note that on Sunday, April 19, all youth and adult Sunday School classes (and anyone else who wants to attend) are invited to join together in a question and answer session with our visiting pastors from Latvia. See Special Events news above for details.

The Well with Gwen Smith
Tickets are now on sale for our next gathering of The Well, featuring Gwen Smith on Thursday, May 7, at 7:00 PM. Gwen will be singing and sharing her heart for girlfriends in God. Gwen's goal is to encourage you to think big thoughts about God by pointing you to His truth and grace through stories, songs and scripture. Tickets are $25, which includes the program and catered dinner. You may purchase tickets online or in the church office. Be sure you buy your tickets early... this will be a sold-out event! Childcare is provided. We'll need volunteers to decorate tables for this special event. We also need a few good men to serve! Spiritual Formation
Refreshing the Soul
On Tuesday, April 14, you are invited to the next gathering of "Refreshing the Soul." We will be practicing the Daily Examen and prayer styles. A great way to spend time with God is to look for God's presence in our life. More than 400 years ago St. Ignatius Loyola encouraged prayer-filled mindfulness by proposing what has been called the Daily Examen, which is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day to discern God's presence and to discern His direction for us. This time is open to all at any point in your walk of faith and no RSVP is required. Please come join us on Tuesday, April 14, at 7:00 PM in the Roundtable Room. If you need childcare, please contact Amy Gravitt (amyg@fumcg.org). Questions? Contact Nancy Johnson at pajnaj@verizon.net or read more at www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/refreshing.

Luther's Four Strands
by Fred Rigdon

Martin Luther, best known as one of the major figures in the Protestant Reformation, was a German monk, a theologian, and a professor of Biblical studies. Luther's core beliefs that the Bible, rather than Church officials, was the only true religious authority, and that salvation is not reached through works but is received as a gift of God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ, shaped the future of Protestantism. His emphasis on the primacy of the Bible prompted him to publish a translation of the scriptures from the Latin to the German vernacular, enabling the common people to receive God's word directly. One day in the spring of 1535 Luther's barber and friend, Peter Beskendorf, having witnessed Luther's devotion to prayer, asked Luther if he could teach him how to pray. Luther responded by presenting to the barber A Simple Way to Pray, for Master Peter the Barber, a treatise on prayer which he later published and which many have found helpful over the centuries. Keep reading...

Introducing... Monica Vickery!
We are excited to announce the completion of our Family Ministries team, with the addition of Monica Vickery as Nursery Director. Monica will start work this Sunday, April 12. Here's a little introduction from Moncia...

My name is Monica Vickery, and I am thrilled to be joining your Children's Ministries team! I absolutely love working with children, and I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to share God's love with your little ones. I have been working with kids for almost 10 years at church, in preschools, and as a nanny. Last year I was certified as a NAC accredited preschool teacher, which is one of the highest certifications available. I have a beautiful 6 month old son, who brings his father and I so much joy and shows us more about God's love every day! In my free time, I love playing my guitar, being outdoors, crafting, and spending time with my sweet family. I feel honored to serve and grow with you and your children!

Parenting Seminar: Faith, Friendships, and Belonging
Being a parent in today's world is tough! Youth and children do not come with a manual, and parents don't have divine foreknowledge to be aware of every situation their child will face. On Wednesday, May 13, from 6:00-7:30 PM, FUMC Grapevine will host a free seminar for parents. Dena Kohleriter, LCSW/Family Therapist from the Momentous Institute, will lead us in "Faith, Fellowship and Belonging: Dealing with acceptance, rejection and bullying." This seminar is for parents of youth, pre-teens and children. As a community of faith, it is our responsibility to help strengthen families throughout our community. We are dedicated to helping families grow together while balancing parenting, family life and work. Please join us for this exciting learning opportunity. Light refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP online or by contacting Linda McClure in the church office (lindam@fumcg.org 817-481-2559 x126). Childcare will be provided; please indicate your need for childcare on your RSVP.

Everyone was thrilled to receive a plant! Thanks for the generosity and caring of so many members of our congregation.
