Seasons Greetings!

Greetings!

With the holidays looming large, we are all busier than ever trying to balance work, family, volunteer commitments, and preparations for impending festivities.  With much of our time devoted to our responsibilities, it is hard to imagine setting aside time for ourselves to focus on professional activities in the new year.    But MAP is thinking ahead and has already programmed a slate of incredible continuing education opportunities to further develop your land use knowledge, connections, and education.

MAP does the heavy lifting so that you can come together in 2013 with other professionals, officials, and national and state experts to expand the breadth and depth of your knowledge to include the latest land use trends and innovations.  Whether you're a new or seasoned planning or zoning official, or a municipal or professional planner or other related professional... MAP has your ideal event planned for the upcoming educational season.  Check out the Calendar of Events in this email and on MAP's homepage for details on the latest opportunities scheduled for 2013.

Developing Mentor Program

Faculty from Michigan's four accredited planning schools joined the MAP Board at their September meeting to identify ways to work more closely together.  One of the ideas that emerged was the development of a mentor program to connect planning students and young professionals with more experienced community planners.  While the details are still being worked out, we would like to get a sense for how many professionals might be interested in participating.  Ultimately there will be a range of ways to participate in the program.

For now,  MAP is seeking professionals who are willing to serve as mentors to students or young professionals.  We will build a list of participating planners, and seek input from participants on the details of the program.  AICP certified planners are especially encouraged to get involved with this nascent program as part of your ethical obligation.  According to the AICP Code of Ethics...
We shall contribute time and resources to the professional development of students, interns, beginning professionals, and other colleagues.

Take the opportunity in 2013 to engage and share your knowledge and expertise with the future of planning in Michigan.  Contact Andrea Brown, abrown@planningmi.org to put your name on the list, or for more information on the MAP mentoring program.

2012 Zoning Series:
Zoning for Distributed Renewable Energy
By: Jim Brueckman, AICP, City of Rochester Hills

For the final edition of the 2012 zoning series, we turn our attention to an issue that many believe will become more acute in the coming years: distributed renewable energy. Due to a confluence of varying and interrelated reasons, the demand for renewable energy installations will increase. Those reasons include the accelerating effects of climate change, increasing cost of fossil fuels, and the decreasing cost of renewable energy.

Planning & Community Resilience in the Face of Climate Change

By: Matt Cowall and Joe VanderMeulen, Land Information Access Association (LIAA)

Climate change is a complex, highly technical and highly politicized subject that resists easy answers, especially for communities that perceive other threats to be more immediate and pressing. Regardless of the political uncertainty and wavering sense of urgency, the impacts of climate change are being documented and the predictive climate models are maturing. Recent projections indicate that Michigan will be a warmer, drier state with increases in extreme heat and rain events and decreases in seasonal snow cover and ice, conditions that will impact every Michigan community in a variety of ways.

Aging, Livable Communities & Economic Demands

By: Ramona Mullahey, Member - Divisions Council/Chapter Presidents Council Task Force on Collaboration Divisions Council Initiative on Aging & Livable Communities

This article was secured through a partnership effort between APA Divisions and APA to provide content for chapter magazines and newsletters.  MAP is delighted to provide this offering from the Collaborative Divisions Council Initiative.

The U.S. is undergoing a demographic transformation. On January 1, 2011, the very first Baby Boomers born between January 1, 1946 and December 31, 1964, turned 65. Further, the Pew Research Center has projected that about 10,000 people "will cross that threshold" every day over the next 19 years.

THE FUTURE OF PLANNING

Student Michigan Association of Planning (SMAP) Conference

CALL FOR SPONSORS:

Sponsorship categories start at $50.

Since 2006, MAP and the student conference committee have delivered successful annual conferences to nearly 600 students of Michigan's universities.  This success depends on sponsorship and mentor participation from professionals like you!

Sponsorships offset the cost for meals and breaks, general supplies, and staffing. More importantly, it allows us to keep registration fees to a minimum, attracting a greater number of participants. Your sponsorship investment will enable the conference planning committee to develop a high caliber learning experience for students, who in turn will enter the workforce better prepared and ready for whatever the future of planning in Michigan may be.

To learn how you can contribute to the 2013 SMAP conference, The Future of Planning, link to the 2013 SMAP sponsorship form or contact Amy at ajordan@planningmi.org, (734)913-2000.
