With the arrival of the Thanksgiving season I would like to dedicate this month's edition of the Innovator to the Fleet's generous community of supporters, friends, and volunteers. You give us your time, energy and financial resources, and for that I am thankful.
Sometimes a member of the Fleet community does something so remarkable that we feel compelled to share it. This happened recently when a longtime supporter visited the Science Center to join a school group experiencing a Heikoff Giant Dome Theater presentation. After watching our Console Operator Eileen Best with the students, the supporter was so inspired by Eileen's dedication and enthusiasm for the Fleet, he decided to donate $10,000 to establish a scholarship program in her name.
The Eileen Best Scholarship Program will fund approximately 1,000 students from underserved communities in our region to visit the Fleet and experience a Dome Theater presentation. The intent of this gift is to recognize Eileen for her incredible commitment, enthusiasm, and professionalism and ensure that more children in San Diego County have access to the wonder of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning.
I can tell you first hand that this act of generosity reverberated throughout our entire organization, giving each staff member and volunteer an extra spring in their step that day. The supporter behind this story requested to remain anonymous, but encouraged us share the news so it might inspire others to "pay it forward."
It is the season to be thankful, and around here that's not hard. Thank you for your ongoing recognition of our team, your time, and the generous support that enables us to further our mission.
