Humpback Whales Comes to the Fleet |
On February 13, the Fleet is excited to host the world premiere of Humpback Whales, an all-new Giant Screen film about our favorite singing cetaceans. Narrated by Ewan McGregor, the film follows a team of researchers from Hawaii to Alaska as they observe how these majestic creatures sing, feed, communicate and play!
To complement our new film, the Fleet will also be offering an hour-long Oceanography Learning Lab where students can experiment with catching zooplankton and learn about the science behind blubber and the importance of the oceanic food web.
Be the first to see Humpback Whales! The film breeches in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater on Friday, February 13. More>>

Don't Try This at Home!
|
The latest addition to our exhibition floor is in full swing! Don't Try This at Home has been wowing Fleet audiences with all the science experiments that are too loud, messy or shocking to try at home. Come volunteer to be on stage and help our science demonstrators share the wonders of static electricity or how you can use air pressure to make a huge mess. And especially don't miss the giant ping pong ball explosion in the Too Loud show!
Afterward, you can try your hand at creating your own messes in our newly expanded Tinkering Studio: Don't Try This at Home! exhibition in the main gallery. More>>

Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar |
We're bringing science to the masses! On Thursday, February 26, the Fleet sends 50 of our favorite scientists out to 25 different bars all over San Diego with one simple mission: Answer any questions people have about science. If you've always wondered what makes the tides rise and fall or how scientific inquiry works, our scientists will be there to help you out. They'll be easy to spot, too! Look for the friendly people with the sign that says "We're Scientists, Ask Us Anything."

La Jolla Community Foundation Funds Family Science Nights |
In November 2014, the Fleet received a generous $5,000 grant from the La Jolla Community Foundation to fund five Family Science Nights in the City of La Jolla. The grant will provide Family Science Nights at four schools and one community resource center.
Family Science Nights are highly engaging events that blend STEM and STEAM concepts, enabling children and their families to make science discoveries together. Family Science Night activities are designed to foster a sense of community and connection amongst participants. The Fleet is thrilled by this new partnership and is excited to work within the City of La Jolla.
