Your Guide to the Fleet
JANUARY 2015
Don't Try This at Home... Really
The Fleet brings an exciting new addition to our exhibition floor. Don't Try This at Home features all the loud, messy and shocking science experiments you can't do at home as performed by our own Fleet Science Show demonstrators. Watch the chaos of a roll of toilet paper combined with a leaf blower, see bananas get used as hammers and witness an epic ping pong ball explosion!

Starting January 31, you can try your own messy, loud and shocking experiments when we debut the Tinkering Studio: Don't Try This at Home! We'll provide more tools, more supplies and more inspiration to maximize your tinkering fun. More>>

Be the first to see it! Don't Try This at Home opens Saturday, January 17.

Rock in the Park With Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe
Our second annual live concert series kicks off with Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe on Friday, January 16. See the former San Francisco Giants third base coach as he showcases the other side of his personality, as an emotional songwriter and seasoned fingerstyle legend of Americana music.

Friday, January 16. Doors open at 7 p.m. 21+

Final Days for ILLUSION and Genome
To make room for Don't Try This at Home, the Fleet must bid farewell to two popular traveling exhibitions. Come explore the human genome with us in Genome: Unlocking Life's Code, through Sunday, January 4. The last day for ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems is Monday, January 19. You only have three weekends left to test the many ways our minds are fooled by sensory deception.

PERCEPTION Vanishes This Month
Our resident illusionist and World Champion of Magic has been busy! Jason Latimer has been a staple on the popular Syfy show Wizard Wars, on top of touring all over the country to perform his special brand of science and illusion. His popular live show, PERCEPTION: See Beyond the Illusion has been dazzling Fleet audiences since July, but it's time for him to disappear. Come see the show while you can. PERCEPTION ends Monday, January 19.

Creating Young Scientists
Start your kids thinking like scientists early! The Young Scientist program at the Fleet introduces children ages 3-5 to concepts like how the body works, from bones to brains, in a way that sparks young minds. Parents participate in the program too, so everybody can share in the science together!

The next session begins on Thursday, January 8.

Sign up now! Class size is limited.

The Origin of the Universe and the Arrow of Time
Theoretical physicist Sean Carroll comes to the Fleet on Monday, January 5, for a special lecture on the nature of time, the origin of entropy and what happened before the Big Bang. You may have seen him previously on the Colbert Report, PBS's NOVA and Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman.

Come join us at the Fleet for this special lecture. The event is free but seats are limited. Register now.

Monday, January 5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Talk begins at 7 p.m.

Suds & Science
What can science teach us about happiness? Are we born with it or is it learned? Grab a pint and join us on Monday, January 12, at Callahan's Pub & Brewery in Mira Mesa, as Dr. Lisa T. Eyler, Associate Professor of the Department of Psychiatry at UCSD, discusses the components of happiness. Our Suds & Science program is a great place to learn something interesting while enjoying a beer and meeting new people.

Sign up in advance because seats fill up fast!

Monday, January 12, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Callahan's Pub & Brewery, 8111 Mira Mesa Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92126
