A Farewell From Executive Director Jeffrey Kirsch

When I came to the Fleet on New Year's Day in 1983, the idea of working on IMAX films for Giant Screens was very exciting for me. But after spending time in the Science Center, I was thrilled to see how hands-on science impacted our visitors, particularly the children. I knew that if we combined the Space Theater and Science Center experiences with educational programs for schools, the Fleet could become a major factor in the improvement of science education for San Diego.

It took me a little longer to learn something else: Every aspect of the Fleet has to be part of the experience we provide for our visitors. The friendly institutional culture we stress at the Fleet is as important as our technologies and our attractions. It motivates the staff, the board, our members and donors and our volunteers. In other words, I have learned it is the WE that can be more successful than the ME.

It has been a fantastic 30 years. And I am delighted that Steve Snyder will be the Fleet's new Executive Director. He's ready to lead a terrific team of dedicated people at the Fleet to new heights, and I am looking forward to helping him as an emeritus for as long I can!

Welcome New Executive Director Steve Snyder
Dr. Snyder welcome
On behalf of everyone at the Fleet, I'd like to thank Jeffrey Kirsch for his 30+ years at the helm and all he has accomplished. I realize I have some very big shoes to fill. My family and I are joining the Fleet from Philadelphia, where I served at The Franklin Institute overseeing exhibits, educational programming and theaters. We're looking forward to trading in our cheesesteaks for fish tacos and snow for sunshine. More importantly, I am very excited for the opportunity to work with all of you, along with the staff, the board and our supporters, to expand the impact of the Fleet on our community.

Steve Snyder takes on his new role July 1.

SciTech, the Fleet's after-school science program for girls, has ended for the school year. This year, students landed probes on meteorites, extracted DNA from wheat germ, learned about the rock cycle, made perfume and experimented with UV beads. October is coming up fast, and we can't wait for another exciting year of learning fun! More>>
