NCA e- notes    Monthly Electronic Newsletter of the Newfoundland Club of America

September 2014

The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and runs through November 30. If you own pets, the likelihood that you and your animals will survive a natural disaster depends largely on being prepared to vacate at a moment's notice. The American Kennel Club® (AKC) offers the following tips on how prepare for an evacuation in the event of a hurricane or natural disaster.

Don't leave your pet at home. Most evacuations last only a few days, but there are times that you may not be able to return to your home quickly. The safest place for your pets is with you. Be prepared to take your pets with you in an evacuation by having a sturdy, safe, comfortable crate or carrier ready for transporting.

If you plan to go to a hotel, call ahead to make sure your animals are welcome. Most hotels relax their pet policies during times of crises, but do not assume that will happen. Information concerning hotel pet-friendly policies is typically found on their website.

Animal-related businesses often offer shelter for people, family members and animals in the event of an emergency. If you belong to a dog club, contact members outside of the affected area by telephone or email to coordinate shelter and transportation for those in need.

Autumn means Draft
draft As water gear is getting packed away, trainers everywhere are hitching up their carts and getting ready for Draft Test season. October abounds with Draft tests in Illinois, Connecticut, Indiana, and Washington. Check them out and spend a lovely fall afternoon watching our breed perform the tasks they have been bred to do.

Newfoundland Club of America
Your NCA Board of Directors recognizes the value and prevalence of social networking systems, such as Facebook™, email lists, and blogs. Sometimes the rise of this entirely new class of communication has been accompanied by what has come to be viewed as cyber-harassment. Those engaged in cyber-harassment post negative comments and half or fabricated truths, often in a sarcastic manner, about individuals who cannot defend themselves. Members of the Newfoundland Club of America should consider social networking communication as public and, as such, understand that their comments reflect on themselves and the NCA. Members should consider carefully what and how they write and are encouraged to stress positive aspects of education rather than negative or sarcastic comments about owners, breeders, and/or Newfoundland fanciers.
