Go Dirty for the Drought

Go dirty for the drought by taking the LA Waterkeeper's Dirty Car Pledge to conserve water and empower your social network to do the same.  Santa Monica promised a hundred or so fleet vehicles, and added 200 "slightly less than sparkling" Big Blue Buses for the campaign.

You can do the same with your ride.  "Going Dirty" actually gives you the out you need to relax a little bit in this car crazed town.  Come on, you deserve it.

How do I go dirty for the drought?

It's easy. Take the Dirty Car Pledge.  Sign the pledge to not wash your car for 60 days. It saves water and it saves money.

SMC Sustainable Technologies Program
Coursework for Jobs

The Sustainable Technologies Program at Santa Monica College is unique coursework designed for both job-seekers and transfer students that want to focus on environmental issues or advance in their careers.

The program provides high quality, industry-driven training. The core classes are conveniently scheduled so that students can achieve a Departmental Certificate in just one semester.

Students that complete an additional 6 units of electives can apply for the state issued Certificate of Achievement in Recycling and Resource Management or Solar Photovoltaic Installation. Some of the classes are also CSU transferable and can be applied to achieve an AA degree in either field.

To find out more about the program, visit the

Earth Science webpage.  For other SMC intitiatives visit the Center for Environmental and Urban Studies website.

SMC TCBY/Starbucks
Certified Green Business

TCBY was the first food establishment at Santa Monica College to achieve Green Business Certification.  Owner
Mike Eghbali proudly displays his certificate on the wall for students to see.

TCBY sets itself apart by offering organic and sustainable food options.

For energy efficiency, Mike retrofitted accent lights on a menu display with LEDs. In the administrative offices, printing cartridges are refilled with ink - this means cartridges are used over and over and again,

instead of disposed of each time they run empty. And, used coffee grounds are collected by students and composted onsite by CLUB GROW students.

TCBY/Starbucks joins a list of over 80 certified green businesses in Santa Monica.  Congratulations!
