Camera Obscura, 1450 Ocean, Santa Monica
This free event brings together community experts with folks seeking to learn how to repair common household items. Bring torn clothes, broken furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, computers, and toys. Volunteers will be on hand to help and offer advice on the best way to reuse and repair your most beloved possessions!

What to bring?
1) Broken items and any replacement parts/equipment you think you might need to repair them; we'll also have some materials and equipment.
2) Curiosity, patience and a DIY attitude.

Disclaimers: there is no guarantee you'll walk out with a workable item; we may not be staffed with the right skills; it may take some time to research and/or find repair parts; it may just not be feasible to repair your item. But we'll help you give it your best shot!

Also of note: Maker Jen Fox will be on hand to help you repurpose broken electronics and toys into sculptural art! If you can't fix it, bring it here and get inspired!

If you know how to fix something please send email to recycling@smgov.net; we welcome volunteers. RSVP here.

Are you Whale Aware?

Check out the updated guide for boaters and a new guide for swimmers, surfers, paddle boarders and kayakers in both English and Spanish

The Southern California Bight includes coastal Southern California, the Channel Islands and surrounding waters and is frequented by one of the largest populations of marine mammals in the world: up to 30 different species! As humpback whales, blue whales and other endangered species frequent this area in search of food, people are taking to the water to see them first-hand. However, many people don't know that these whales are protected or that getting too close can potentially cause harm to these magnificent animals. Whales and dolphins are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and boaters need to pay careful attention when approaching them.

Trade in your old, gas-powered lawn mower for a high-performance electric mower and save hundreds! Electric mowers are quieter, energy efficient and far less polluting. Sponsored by the South Coast Air Management District. Pre-registration is required, visit www.aqmd.gov or call 1-888-425-6247.
