County Asks All Residents To Shut Sprinkler Systems Completely Off Until Next Week
|
With heavy rain in the forecast for this weekend, Los Angeles County leaders are asking residents and businesses to shut all irrigation systems off. Two storms expected later this week are anticipated to dump up to several inches of rain, more than enough water for lawns and gardens until at least the middle of next week.
On January 17, 2014, Governor Jerry Brown declared a drought emergency for California, with the state suffering its driest year on record.
"We all need to do our part to help conserve water, so the very best and most effective thing any one of us can do to take immediate advantage of the coming rain is to simply shut our sprinkler systems off," said Supervisor Don Knabe, Chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. "Your yard won't need to be watered until later next week, at the very least."

Santa Monica Salons First in So. Cal to be Recognized by CA Healthy Nail Salon Program
|
Cute Nails, Nancy's Nails, Santa Monica Beach Nail Spa and Tracy's Nail Spa will be the first SoCal nail salons to be recognized.
|
Monday, March 3 at 10:30 AM, Mayor Pam O'Connor will present the healthy nail salons with commendations to recognize their important contribution to protecting the health of nail salon workers, their customers and the environment.
The Healthy Nail Salon Program requires that salons go through a rigorous safety checklist, install localized ventilation, train all employees and choose safer nail products. This voluntary program is available to all of the approximately 30 nail salons across the city. Santa Monica becomes the first city in SoCal to officially recognize healthy nail salons and joins the City and County of San Francisco and Alameda County in the growing movement to use recognition programs to promote healthier and safer nail salon environments for workers, owners, and consumers.
Look for the certificate above to know if your favorite nail salon is participating. For more information, click here.

| 6th Annual Sustainable Santa Monica Student Poster Contest |

Our Plan is to become "self-sufficient", meaning our groundwater wells will be able to supply all of our water. Your challenge is to show us ways we can do this. What do you think it means to use water "well?" For contest and submission details, visit sustainablesm.org.

Congratulations to Perry's and the Santa Monica Bike Center for becoming Certified Green Businesses this January!
Perry's Café and Beach Rentals pedal hard to greener meadows with praiseworthy waste reduction successes. By eliminating many individual packaged goods, participating in co-mingled blue bin recycling, and composting all food and dirty paper waste, Perry's diverts 65-70% of valuable materials from ending up in local landfills.
As part of the overall mission to increase environmental sustainability and bike ridership in Santa Monica, the Bike Center offers a Commuter Bike Loaner Program, which aims to support potential cyclists in the process of learning to commute by bike. This two-week, free trial equips participants with a bike, helmet, bags, lights, and guidance to find the best bike routes for their specific commute.
