2014 Brings Changes for Businesses and Property Owners and Managers
State regulation and utility rate changes to encourage awareness and conservation of energy

Buildings account for 36 percent of total energy use and 65 percent of electricity consumption in the United States. In California, total energy use has remained level despite population growth. In 2014, new regulation and changes in utility rates will continue to encourage energy efficiency and conservation.
AB1103 requires all nonresidential building owners and operators to benchmark a building's energy use in advance of the sale, lease, financing or refinancing of the entire building. Benchmarking can be done through Energy Star.

Building owners and operators can use this
fact sheet to learn more about the requirements. Also changing in 2014 will be SCE electricity rates for small and medium business as they transition to Time-Of-Use rates. Unlike one flat rate, there are now different rates depending on the season and the time of day the energy is used. When you use energy is just as important as how much you use! For a free consultation to save energy, contact Sustainable Works.

Free California FriendlyŽ Landscape Training for Residents

Saturdays, Feb 15, March 8 and April 19, 11:30 to 2:30 PM

Camera Obscura Building, 1450 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica

Santa Monicans are becoming some of the most California FriendlyŽ residents. In just nine months, more than 130 residents decided to make-over their gardens into sustainable ones and saved more than 850,000 gallons of water.  They joined many residents all over southern California that were tired of wasting water, money and time with high-maintenance gardens and switched to beautiful waterwise landscapes.

If you're interested in learning how to create your own California FriendlyŽ garden, join other residents for a fun and free 3-hour training led by local landscaping experts.

For more information and to register, email savewater@smgov.net or call (310) 458-8459. Only 25 spaces are available per training.
