Klein's "Self-Luminous" Palm Desert Residence
by Lois I. Hutchinson
Steven Klein's Self-Luminous Palm Desert Residence
Steven L. Klein, principal of Klein Lighting, collaborated with Milwaukee architects Deep River Partners on this fabulous winter residence in Palm Desert, CA. Transparent glass walls reveal the curving and rectilinear forms inside, washed thoughtfully in LED and halogen lighting so as to appear self-luminous. The extravagant lighting integrates seamlessly to create order and drama: forming an object lesson on how and why to light surfaces that define spaces.

Mother Nature's Color Wheels of Light
Contributed by Gloria Jaroff, AIA
A watercolorist paints with pigments, but architects and designers paint with light. We live inside a world of additive color, where combining all colors forms white light, which is also the basis for our artificial lighting system. So why do architects and painters use derivatives of traditional subtractive color wheels to select finishes? Why not color the world the same way as Mother Nature?

Title 24 Has Decimated the Lighting Retrofit Industry in California
The current Title 24 has decimated the lighting retrofit industry in California, forcing companies to lay off people or even go out of business. One Northern California distributor's sales on lighting retrofit products dropped 75% since this Title 24 came into effect. The main thing that has allowed some retrofits to occur is that retrofitting with LED T8s, also called TLEDs, while keeping the existing ballasts does not trigger Title 24. Although the CEC may have considered that mainly a maintenance strategy, it has become is a major retrofit strategy. TLED manufacturers may love the CEC. There are usually better retrofit solutions, but they trigger Title 24, which typically can add 20 - 40% to the project cost without necessarily saving any extra energy.
