Morris 09
Millers River Morris Help To Celebrate The Summer Solstice

Dear Friends,

REMEMBER when we were miserable?  Is there any one of us who remains unscathed from that deep, deep, deep valley of a winter through which we recently traversed?  Do I project?  Not even those skiers among you, and snowboarding aficionados and you mountain climbers - even all of you, at least silently, slyly, exhaled a sigh of relief at that first thaw (when was it, last week?).

I was beginning to think that peepers and orioles were exotic species I might find only in a coffee table book; not one of my coffee table books because I burned all of them this past winter just to stay alive and spare the furniture.  I thought that perhaps I had missed the nuclear explosion (too numb to hear it, wrapped up in blankets and couldn't see it) that caused a year of winter. I was actually preparing my survivalist notes and putting together a Mad Max ride and was maybe going to go out and shoot it up somewhere.  I hadn't seen my neighbors in months.  My children stopped talking and my wife never got out of bed; I was afraid even to check her breathing.  The cold would keep her I knew, if she had passed.

So, now, for it be warm and green, is, for me, difficult not to dwell on almost constantly.  I just love this stuff.

Let it be known that I am color blind; red-green, a common malady attributable to the x chromosome and sex linked; meaning mostly men get it.  Yet, so encumbered as I am, my favorite colors are grass green, leaf green, toad and frog green, summer slime green and tight tight t-shirt green.

I love the warmth.  Let's not let it get away too quickly.  There is fun to be had.  We have two big things going on.

Solstice Party & Beer Breakfast #7
Saturday, June 21, 8 AM till 10 AM
Millers River Morris Men 9 AM

Breakfast Buffet & First Beer $13

First 75 People Receive Commemorative Pilsner Glass

WHEN's the last time you had a beer at 8 AM? Don't ask me, I won't answer, but for most of you, I think the answer is "last year at the 6th Solstice Party & Beer Breakfast". This is the only time it is impossible to feel bad about a bit of the drink so early in the morning - for most of us. We will have the usual; Espresso Stout, Orange Hef, all of our other beers, and a bangin' breakfast buffet.

The first 75 people in the door will yet again receive the Solstice Party and Beer Breakfast 12-oz commemorative pilsner glass. And all people in the door will receive their first beer as a part of the price of entry.

The really interesting thing, you may recall, is the performance set for 9 AM by the Millers River Morris Men.  We will dance the Morris and maybe you will learn a thing or too. Search me, why you would! Let's get this freaking summer under way. I'm still cold.

IT happens sometimes to certain small, rare, lucky cities - as it has recently in Gardner - that a critical mass of interested and motivated and starry eyed people intersect to create an unlikely result that goes beyond what one might expect of such a small place situated somewhere between happenin' and not-really-much-going-on.

Said collaborators decided that Gardner could sure use a three-day music festival in a parking lot, at the beginning of summer, the essence of which would be described as roots, folk 'n' rock. Upon this decision, the newly formed committee, post haste and forthwith, set out to contact all kinds of people with interest, talent, love of Gardner and a bit of moxy, to bring this festival to the fore. It is now called the Gardner Uptown Roots Music Festival. And it is happenin', like Gardner.

What're you doing end of June? Please visit www.uptownrootsfest.com to find out. Our very slick and laying-it-all-out-in-lavender website is sure to draw you in. We have clips, pics, information and soon, a parking map. It's what the people want!
