Beach Party Plus!
DENIAL

Dear Snow Lovers (yeah, right),

It's Hump Week and, so, time for my mid-winter, hump week grumble.  And I am bloody cold.

At this time, when certain of you have embraced chilly heartless, heatless winter and are out bounding up and down snowy-steep-ruthless-implacable hills; sliding with steel blades over cold, dead ice; grinning gaily near dangerous ice-fires fishing for God-knows-what-can-stay-alive in that miserable cold life sapping abyss; and are generally happily engaged

(Having the unlikely point of view that winter is somehow beneficent and you are glad not to be sweating your pelotas off, or swatting flies and just generally whining about the awful, steamy weather that would be summer, you lovers of the dark and cold);  While you are blithely so engaged, I am here, hunkered down, heat turned up, fire roaring, clasping hot cocoa (believe that one?) and subtly spying the sky for signs of longer sun and a break in the stabbingly cold.

I am a heat seeking, daylight detecting, deck loving resident of summer, may it never end. Give me warm, moist heat.

My way of dealing with a looming winter begins in August as I soak up the summer's last heat deep into my bones (not talking yukky sunbathing here), then I deny the autumn chilly bite by having late afternoon drinks on the opulent Ale House deck as the sun dives too quickly and I pretend it is still a warm summer evening - always wearing shorts.

I next shoot into winter with as much heat as I can hold, seat heaters on, car pre-warmed, spending only seconds between house and car - car and restaurant, eyes closed, body in a ball, hoping to make it to late February with a bit of heat left somewhere in my guts and maybe some whiskey in my glass.  At which time (late Feb.) I hope to slowly emerge from conscious hibernation to look around and find signs of warmth in a slightly longer day or a teasing thaw.

I always fail at this ridiculous expectancy - body cold, whiskey glass empty, freakin' freezin' outside - and then, with almost no resolve left to make it through my 'dark night of the soul' (Stealing from St. John), I further find that my veins no longer carry blood, but thin blue ice water, and my teeth, now a percussion instrument, are set to chattering at a rate inversely proportional to the perceived temperature.  That is to say, I don't need a dog whistle.

Are you cold now?  Or, am I a voice crying in the tundra?  Perhaps we are all ready to throw off this mantle of ice and say "Winter! Dude! What is up with, like, you know, the relentlessness? Right?"

We have our summer this Friday.  Once again, to the beach!

Fat Tuesday - March 4, Creole Food Fest

Fat Tuesday

Remember that day before Ash Wednesday when all the observers of Lent are getting all their bad out and this is the last day to do it, the baddest day?

Well, the best way to do it and not get in trouble, is with food. And so for one day only, we put out a Creole food fest in Mardi Gras fashion and then as quickly as Ash Wednesday comes it all goes away and you would never know anyone was bein' bad or bein' anything.

Look at that lady. Is she bad? Absolutely.

Ah Ciao!

All that stuff above is simply to distract us from the cold and dark.  Pretty sweet, right?  I swear, sometimes for a whole minute I can actually forget that I am freezing my gear off  and that it's winter.  A whole minute!  That's distraction.

I hope that, forthwith, a break in winter will soon occur, pointing the way out to the deck, where we all belong.

With all that went into getting that temple to the sun going, we surely must use it till it dries up and blows away. And looking at the under structure, I think the restaurant will blow away before this

Wishing you all a warm fire and a full (but emptying) glass.

ciao

Thanks for being there!
