Tenor Rolando Sanz to Perform Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" with American Youth Symphonic Orchestra
The American Youth Philharmonic (AYP) with conductor Daniel Spalding and the American Youth Symphonic Orchestra (AYSO) with conductor Carl J. Bianchi present "Festa Italiana" as their final concert of the season on Sunday, June 2, 3:00 p.m. at George Mason University's Center for the Arts in Fairfax, Virginia. AYSO welcomes to the stage special guest artist Rolando Sanz to sing "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot by Puccini.
"With all of this wonderful Italian music being performed, everyone in attendance will be made honorary Italians for the day," said Maestro Bianchi. "We are thrilled to have the very talented tenor Rolando Sanz performing 'Nessun Dorma'... a popular piece for both the musicians and audience members!"
Additional repertoire by AYSO includes the Overture to La Gazza Ladra by Rossini and Pines of Rome by Respighi. AYP will perform the La Strada suite for orchestra from the ballet by Rota.
"I'm thrilled to be able to present Nino Rota's La Strada ballet suite with the American Youth Philharmonic," said Maestro Spalding. "Rota is well known as a film composer with legendary scores for Coppola's The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, which won an Academy Award, and Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet. The La Strada ballet suite premiered in 1966 and, in my opinion, is one of Rota's best works. Tuneful and vibrant, this is music that really tells a story. This ballet is well known in Italy but is very rarely played in America. If you want to hear music that still sounds new and fresh, then you will want to be at this concert."
Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors (65+), $10 for students (including college with ID), and free for music teachers. Tickets are available online or at the venue box office.
About the Guest Artist: Cuban-American tenor Rolando Sanz is quickly gaining recognition for his "sensitive" and "luminous" portrayals of such roles as Rodolfo, Tamino, Nemorino, Alfredo, and Pinkerton. This past season, he sang the role of Rodolfo in La bohème with Toledo Opera and the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto with Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and Annapolis Opera. Up next, he sees performances as Alfredo in La traviata with Florentine Opera and will also debut with Seattle Opera in 2014 as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto. Other recent engagements include Rodolfo in La bohème with Toledo Opera; Paolo in Francesca da Rimini with the Princeton Festival; his debut with Caramoor singing Rodolphe in Guillaume Tell; Nemorino in L'Elisir d'Amore with Opera Idaho; and L'Aumônier in Dialogues des Carmélites under the baton of James Conlon with the Aspen Music Festival. Other Aspen appearances have included Mozart in Rimsky-Korsakov's Mozart & Salieri and Lippo Florentino in Street Scene. Other recent engagements include Peter Doyle in the west coast premiere of Lowell Liebermann's Miss Lonelyhearts, for which the Los Angeles Times reported: "Rolando Sanz, as Doyle, gave the best hint of the score's expressive possibilities."
