Greetings!

Finally, rain has fallen and the wilted leaves spring upright and drink in the coolness. We are now in the heat of an early summer and look forward to spending more time in the shade of the woods, amongst the blooming flowers in the gardens, and listening to music of the Chesapeake Bay and bird songs of dawn and dusk.

We hope you will join us for potlucks, workshops, music, film, meetings and conversation at any of the events listed below.

Film, Discussion, and Potluck: I AM
Saturday, June 15, 6:30-9:30pm
Sacred Economics Circle and CHEARS Home Salon

Please join us to view together the award winning film, I AM, which poses two practical and provocative questions: what's wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better? The filmmaker behind the inquiry is Tom Shadyac who sets out on a twenty-first century quest for enlightenment. Meeting with a variety of thinkers and doers- from the worlds of science, philosophy, academia, and faith-including such luminaries as David Suzuki, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and more.

Contact Steve Kane, 301-437-8814 for more information.

I AM In I AM, Shadyac steps in front of the camera to recount what happened to him after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged with a new sense of purpose, determined to share his own awakening to his prior life...

MEETINGS
  • The next GCAN Meeting will be on Tuesday, June 18, at 7 pm, in the Community Center, Room 1114  We will have two parts to our evening.  First, we will have a potluck meal, to celebrate the end of our programming year.  Secondly, we will listen to a CD with a guided session on EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or "tapping" to heal the collective (and personal) stress of climate change.  Please look for a separate GCAN email later this month with details.
GCAN "ACTIVISTS"

We continue to have a broad-spectrum focus, including:

  • CITYNo current action.
  • COUNTYJoin an ad-hoc group that meets in College Park, to support a new county Draft Solid Waste Plan, that moves us in the direction of "Zero Waste". This plan is of particular interest to those of us concerned about recycling or composting.
  • STATE: Over the summer we will be working with CCAN and FWW (Food & Water Watch) to monitor the Commission on Fracking, to make sure the natural gas industry does not exert undo pressure on the process.  Click here to learn more and sign a petition to Governor O'Malley.
  • FEDERAL: We are continuing to fight the approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Many of us will be participating in the 5 day 2013 Walk for our Grandchildren (July 22-26) or in one of several different rallies in DC on July 27-28-29th.

 SPECIAL PROJECTS

  • The Greenbelt TimeBank continues to make progress. After two months of experimentation with the TimeBankUSA software, we have decided to try a simpler platform through hOurworld. Our Greenbelt Time Bank is now up and running!  Click to join - it may take a few days for one of the coordinators to approve your membership.
  • The Greenbelt Worker-owned Cooperative continues to meet monthly.  Three of the most popular ideas are a Childcare Center in Franklin Park, a Composting Facility to make organic soil, and an Edible Landscaping Business.  Next meeting is Sun, June 2, 3:30-5:30 pm.  The Composting Coop Subcommittee will meet on Sun, June 9 or 16, 3-5 pm.  Contact Lore for details.
  • Re-Skilling Workshop Committee  is being spearheaded by Judy Hamburg.  The next topic will probably be "weatherizing your windows". Stay tuned for details.
  • Film Fest:  The recently completed Sacred Economics circle has decided to host a series of provocative films.  Please keep your eyes out for upcoming announcements. Next up will probably be "I AM" on June 15th in a private home.
DISCUSSION CIRCLES
We recently started three discussion circles:
A. "The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change" by Al Gorewhich has been meeting Tuesdays or Wednesdays, during the day, at Paint Branch UU Church in Adelphia, since the end of April. Contact Genie Van Pelt at 301-292-3328 for more info.
B. A "Peer Support Group" for Climate/Sustainability Activists is meeting on Mondays, starting on June 3rd in Greenbelt. Please email Lore for more info.
C. "Voluntary Simplicity" will be meeting Wednesdays in South College Park/North Hyattsville, starting June 5th.  Contact Carol Nezzo for more info.

A new circle can start on any one of a number of topics (Sacred Economics, Common Security Club/Resilience Circle, Change By Degrees: Addressing the Climate Challenge) as soon as we have a critical mass.

For more info on any of these listings, contact Lore Rosenthal, 301-345-2234, Greenbelt Climate Action Network.  Also visit our calendar on the CHEARS website for a full listing of events.

The 9th Annual Green Man Festival was a celebration of Greenbelt's commitment to preserve its acres of forests and to extend the urban tree canopy by planting more native fruiting trees.

The Green Man Festival reconnects us to the folklore of ancient civilizations through science, art, music and myth by featuring many local artists, musicians and local performers from Maryland.

Visit our website to learn more or write to Richard, Project Coordinator.
