Where: Heathcote Community
21300 Heathcote Rd, Freeland, MD

Come learn about SOL's unique Community Land Trust (CLT) model!  The purpose of the Community Land Trust is to provide secure access to land for current generations and protect the land for future generations, while representing the interests of the larger community. SOL's CLT model integrates Georgist economic principles, intentional community, ecological stewardship and education.

This presentation will provide an overview of the history of the SOL CLT model, the Georgist principles behind collecting land rent, why CLT may be the best land-holding option for intentional communities, and how the CLT model promotes sustainability and social justice.

This Meetup workshop is free and donations are welcome.

Contact Karen Stupski, 410-357-9523 to register.

Greetings!

NOW is the time to STOP the Keystone XL pipeline. Please view the report from Democracy Now that exposes the ExxonMobil tar sands oil pipeline rupture in Arkansas. This is the final official comment period for Keystone XL and for us to unite and send our comments to the administration rejecting the XL pipeline. Please join CHEARS volunteers in signing the form and personalizing your own comments.

As for local actions, there are numerous events for all to engage from streambed cleanups, learning about community land trust models and attending house concerts and gathering together to start green worker cooperatives.

Come join us in building a more resilient and informed community!

Concerts Within the Chesapeake
Spring/Summer Concert Series throughout Maryland

You are invited to join us this spring and summer to share community through song and story, featuring singer/songwriter Mac Walter and the Finding Home Production creative duo Teresa Whitaker and Frank Schwartz.

Tom Wisner

Teresa, Frank, and Mac will pay tribute to their long-time collaborator Tom Wisner, Bard of the Chesapeake.  Tom wrote many songs with his friends, but the ones in this collection are those he sang often with children and groups of educators throughout the Chesapeake Bay region. The songs themselves are celebrations of imagination and wonder, and what it means to be "Chesapeake Born."

MEETINGS
  • The next GCAN Meeting will be on Tuesday, April 16, at 7 pm, in the Community Center Room 114.  The title is "Peer Support Networks," presented by Dr. Jim Driscoll, Ph.D., M.B.A., Executive Director, National Institute for Peer Support.  You will receive a separate GCAN email with details.
GREEN MAN FESTIVAL
GCAN will have a table at the Green Man Festival on May 11-12, to highlight all of our activities below.  Please email Lore if you are able to volunteer an hour of your time.  She will send out a schedule sign up soon.

GCAN "ACTIVISTS"

We continue to have a broad-spectrum focus, including:

  • CITYNo current action.  The city approved support of the Fracking Moratorium on Feb 25 and a Community Solar bill on March 11.  Unfortunately, neither bill made it in Annapolis.
  • COUNTYJoin an ad-hoc group that meets in College Park, to support a new county Draft Solid Waste Plan, that moves us in the direction of "Zero Waste". Email Lore to inquire about the date of the next meeting
  • STATE
    • Offshore Wind Energy Bill (HB0226), passed on March 18.
    • Moratorium on Fracking (SB0601) failed the Senate Committee on March 26 (with a vote of 6-5).
    • Community Solar Bill (SB0699) failed the Senate Committee on March 26 (with a vote of 6-5).
    • A number of GCAN "Activists" attended rallies and hearings and lobbied for these bills.
  • FEDERAL We are continuing to fight the approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline.  More than 30 Greenbelters attended the Feb 17 Forward on Climate Rally.  You can sign a form letter, pleading with Secretary of State Kerry and President Obama not to approve the pipeline.  Also sign up for a Day of Action in May (tbd).

 SPECIAL PROJECTS

  • The Greenbelt TimeBank continues in beta testing.  For a sneak preview, visit our website.
  • An ad-hoc group continues to meet to investigate a green, worker-owned cooperativeThree of the most popular ideas are a daycare center in Franklin Park, a Composting Facility to make organic soil, and an Edible Landscaping Business.  Next meeting is Sun, April 7, 3-5 pm.  The Composting Coop Subcommittee will meet on Sat, April 6, 2-4 pm.  Contact Lore for details.
  • Re-Skilling Workshop Committee needs a few "champions" to help plan another re-skilling workshop.  The topic will probably be "weatherizing your windows".  Contact Lore if you would like to help with a planning meeting.
DISCUSSION CIRCLES
We will start a new round of circles as soon as we can identify 8 interested people for any of these four topics:
If you are interested, contact Lore and let her know which nights of the week work for you and which topics.

For more info on any of these listings, contact Lore Rosenthal, 301-345-2234, Greenbelt Climate Action Network.  Also visit our calendar on the CHEARS website for a full listing of events.
